The Official 2004 Model Year Changes

You heard it here first! I just received some information from a very good source regarding changes to the US spec MINI for 2004 model year:

“MINI USA is pleased to announce the changes for the 2004 model year beginning with the recently received September allocation. Little has changed from MY03 in terms of the vehicles,..but a lot has changed in the way you can order them.”

For MY 04 the Cooper and Cooper S will have the following changes:

  • 850 – Pepper White for Cooper S
  • 903 – Velvet Red deleted for Cooper (need to make room for future convertible colors)
  • T3CB – Cordoba Beige available in sport seats (Cooper and Cooper S)
  • 255 – 3 Spoke Leather Sport Steering Wheel (Phase in 12/1/03 for Cooper and Cooper S)
  • 240 – Leather Basic Steering Wheel (Phase out 11/30/03 for Cooper)
  • STD – Rear Power Socket will return as standard
  • STD – Digital Speed Read-out in Tach will be standard (switch between Temp and Speed)
  • 550 – On Board Computer will also include an instantaneous fuel consumption function
  • 476 – Magnesium Door Casing will be dropped for Cooper S
  • “Other Key points to note are that as of 12/03 Rear Fog Lights will be a factory orderable option (Option # TBD) and in the mean time a dealer installed accessory Rear Fog Light kit is being developed to coincide with the September MY04 changeover.”

“All of these new items will complement the existing options and packages,..and pricing will be announced shortly.”

Wow – some very interesting news there. BTW for those interested in option 255 you can check out that new three-spoke steering wheel here.

The bigger news in this latest MINIUSA bulletin (at least to dealers) is a brand new online ordering system. It looks like MINI dealers will be getting the new system by October 1st. “This new system changes the ordering process slightly in an attempt to minimize dealer Stock complexity.”

All told this will be a fairly quiet year for MINI. With the Cabrio coming in late '04 as an '05 model and a possible facelift scheduled for the MINI sometime in '05 this year could be considered the calm before the storm.

[UPDATE 7/27] I've posted some additional changes that have surfaced in regards to the '04 model year MINI.

not too bad. i've actually grown to like my 2 spoke sports wheel. i'd have liked the rear power socket, but i will be in line for the rear-fog retrofit.

  • http://bridger.us/mini Gabe

Here are the big highlights IMHO:

    • 850 – Pepper White for Cooper S This is big for me because it'll most likely be my next color if I go with an MCS for my next MINI

    • 903 – Velvet Red deleted for Cooper (need to make room for future convertible colors) Sorry to see it go but I'm sure MINI will have something fun to fill it's place :)

    • T3CB – Cordoba Beige available in sport seats (Cooper and Cooper S) Even though I would still opt for leatherette this is another one of those no-brainers. The standard Cordoba seats look fantastic but lack lateral support that you get with sport seats. Enter the Cordoba Sport seats!

    • 255 – 3 Spoke Leather Sport Steering Wheel (Phase in 12/1/03 for Cooper and Cooper S)
This is a big (and welcome) change to a major part of the interior.

    • 240 – Leather Basic Steering Wheel (Phase out 11/30/03 for Cooper) It would be nice to see this stick around as a no cost option but then again I'm sure MINI needs to streamline the ordering process as much as possible with the Cabrio coming online next year

    • STD – Rear Power Socket will return as standard Another no-brainer.

    • STD – Digital Speed Read-out in Tach will be standard From the moment I first drove a MINI I never understood why they didn't do this. With the center mounted speedo it just makes sense

    • 550 – On Board Computer will also include an instantaneous fuel consumption function
Similar to the classic BMW analog MPG readout under the tach. Always fun to watch.

    • 476 – Magnesium Door Casing will be dropped for Cooper S Personally I think it's a nice look but aparently I was in the minority as I'm sure it's being dropped because lack of popularity in the ordering process.

  • ANTSMINI

Me wants me that wheel! Will it be retrofitable?

  • http://bridger.us/mini Gabe

I would imagine it would be. I would also imagine that there are going to be people out there you dislike it and wouldn't mind trading you for a '02 or '03 wheel.

  • http://www.chicagominiclub.com Matt

if i were in the market for another MINI, a standard Cooper with CVT next time (i wish) i'd probably get Pepper White too. i think it's a really nice color and would go really well with their red interior.

i'm indifferent about the rest, kinda nice, but nothing i wish i had.

  • John

Aside from the paint color, are the above mentioned items “retro-fittable”? I'd be interested in the rear socket, speed read-out, and fuel consumption. I would think that the speedo stuff is just a software patch.

  • Frank

Gabe, can I order the rear fog lights as a dealer installed option for my upcoming '04 MCS (9/03 build)?

  • http://bridger.us/mini Gabe

Frank – yes I would assume that they will be available by October of this year. It will be interesting to see what sort of level they price them at.

  • Wayne

Wish I could retrofit the DC plug in the 03 models and hope they could retrofit the tack speedo ect, Again, do not understand Y they dont put ALL of the changes at the beginning of model year?? (MINIUSA –please comment!!!).. The “early builds of the new model yr get screwed out these items resulting in “less value,,Example, early builds in 03 got rooked out of the medal peddles/gas ..about $200 to retrofit!!..Knocked out the DC outlet,,02 and 04 models will have it?..Great..

  • http://www.geocities.com/blue_mini_cooper_2003/ drew

So does anyone currently have a rear power socket? I don't think I have one or don't know where it is if I do.

  • PC

Wondering what the pridictions are for the 05 cars. Ya I know we don't have the 04's here yet but what's this calm before the storm stuff?? I have an 04 “S” to arrive in May/June time frame but I quess I could wait for something interesting in 05??

  • http://bridger.us/mini Gabe

We don't know any details obviously about the '05 model year MINI but it has been widely reported that there will be a facelift coming down the pipeline in the not too distant future. '05 seems to be the time frame most commonly talked about.

But it's more interesting than that. If you follow the standard BMW protocol a model lasts for 7 years. However initially it was widely reported that the MINI's lifecycle would be shorter due to the current car not having enough profit built into it. Essentially BMW over engineered the car and because of that don't make as much money per unit as they'd life.

Now here's where it gets interesting. BMW execs have since said that the MINI has proven to be much more successful than anticipated and that they have sold more high-profit cars then they had expected (cars with lots of options). Because of that I wouldn't be surprised to see BMW not shy away from making the next generation MINI another engineering tour de force like the current platform.

That next generation MINI should bow sometime in 2007 as a '08 model if BMW follows it's initial timeline.

  • dave

I hope the Pepper White exterior color for the “S” is true! I have one on order and will change to Pepper White/black top and mirrors as soon as it is official. great site!!!

  • http://bridger.us Gabe

Dave – It's 100% official. Your dealer should have all this information by now.

BTW – Thanks for the kind words about the site :)

  • Tom Sorrels

THanks for the posting of the 2004 changes! Thanks to you, I changed my order for an '03 BRG MCS w/BLACK leather interior to the Cordoba Beige leather that I wanted in the '03 and found that it was only available in the Cooper! Now I get what I REALLY want!

    Keep up the good work!

  • http://bridger.us/mini Gabe

Tom – I'm happy I could help you by posting this info. This is the sort of thing I hope this site becomes known for – delivering helpful information to owners and prospective owners of MINIs. I think you'll love your new car :)

  • Andy

Just been on a factory tour at Oxford today and all the MINIs being built had the shark fin antenna – looked ggod, but my Cooper S which i picked up last week doesn't have it!!

Also saw an all white Cooper S being driven around the plant.

  • http://bridger.us/mini Gabe

I've heard the rumor but until now haven't had it substantiated. It is being updated now!

  • Carissa

Andy, Maybe all the cars you saw had navigation?

  • http://bridger.us/mini Gabe

Carissa – FYI I've heard this from other that have been on recent tours as well. I guess we'll find out shortly.

  • Andy

Carissa – I checked and there were very few with sat nav, but all had the shark fin (except the odd car which had no antenna at all)!

  • Darren Fletcher

I can't believe the center mounted speedo is going bye bye! I do like the shark fin antenna though….any pics??

  • http://bridger.us/mini Gabe

Darren – It's not going away. It's just that now you will be able to see the speed in the digital readout on the tach as well as the regular speedo. I can't see MINI ever getting rid of the center mounted speedo.

  • Darren Fletcher

Yes it makes sense, it's also a relief as this is one of the things that sets it apart.Have you seen the shark fin antenna?

  • http://bridger.us/mini Gabe

Yup – you can see the shark fin attenna in the third post from the top of the page.

  • Gregg

Just found this site – GREAT!

Earlier this eve, I was looking at other message sites, one of 'em (mini2.com or miniusa.com?) mentioned the possibility of the addition, in '05, of a wagon. Would be cool if true. Have you heard anything? Timing would be terrific, we'll be looking to replace the “other” car about then and a bigger MINI would probably fit the bill very nicely.

Thanks again. I'm off to bookmark this page now ;-D

    Gregg

  • http://bridger.us/mini Gabe

Gregg – welcome! Here's a post from a while back about a 4 door MINI. Also you may want to check out the archive to see some of the older stories. Also the search might be helpful to find articles on specific topics. Enjoy!

  • phill

Any word on the new (non Daimler-Chrysler) engine rumored when the current contract runs out? I heard it will be a high-tech unit designed and built by a eurpean consortium.

  • http://bridger.us Gabe

Phil – here's some info on the next MINI from awhile back that might help answer your question: The MINI R56

  • RedBackFur

I already have the SharkFin antenna on my 2003 cooper, because I have the Navigation system. Acutally, the radio reception isn't that good, since it is an antenna printed on the rear side window, much like a defroster. I lose signal all the time on AM radio when I pass on the lower deck of the San Francisco Bay Bridge. I also miss the fact that I can't put on an antenna ball either. Funny you would prefer to lose reception over a cooler look in your MINI.

  • Darren D

I have the regular MINI antenna and I lose AM radio when I pass under a walking bridge! So I don't think it has anything to do with the shark antenna piece!

  • Robert Stith

At the first of July, 2002, I ordered my first Mini. Cancelled the order in November because the deliver date was then set for February. I have just ordered again (build date is supposed to be April) and would like to know how confident I should be in a delivery date of mid May?

  • Frank Cesarz

I also have problems with my mini cooper AM radio reception. When I pass under an overpass I lose reception and when I travel 30 miles outside of San Francisco I also lose AM reception. any ideas

  • Louis Bricklin

I have the same problem with AM radio. Horrible reception and static. Anyone find a solution?
