7.6 Percent Jump in July Sales for MINIUSA

From MINI PR:

Demand for MINI brand automobiles remains strong and MINI USA reported July sales of 3,084 automobiles-a 7.6 percent jump from the 2,866 cars reported in July 2002. Sales of MINI automobiles for the first seven months of 2003 totaled 20,614. MINI went on sale in the U.S. on March 22, 2002 and last year, MINI USA reported sales of 9,605 cars through July 31, 2002.

This must be good news to MINIUSA. It's been over a year since the US introduction and the MINI still selling as briskly as ever.

What was really telling was a couple experiences I had at a wedding lastnight. Several friends (who aren't specifically into cars more than the average person) found out that I had a MINI and immediately started prompting me with questions. Interestingly two of them had the idea that the MINI cost twice as much as it does. They were so taken by the starting price of the Cooper and the whole package that I'm now taking one of them out for a test drive next week and the other is visiting her dealership in San Fransico when she flies back Monday.

For fun (!) I keyed all the sales data from Fred Meloan into a simple web page which I will try to remember to keep updated each month. I wonder how to make a graph?

Gabe, I've had people I don't know ask me how much my MINI cost right off the bat. Even one guy shouting out the window of his moving car. To these people, I say $50,000. (I'd hate to see a moron owning a MINI). I think a lot of people think they cost more than they do.

Ian, thanks for the sales data. I find it interesting that in '02, the MCS out-sold the Cooper in a few months, but in '03, the Cooper has really pulled out in front. I wonder how the U.S. sales compare to world-wide sales for the respective models.

I too have had people ask me about my S, thinking that it cost $42K or better. I wish! One fellow wanted to know about my “Minor”.

Drew, I think the MCS sales behaviour the first year was just pent up orders – the enthusiasts who laid down money many months before production began generally wanted the best. The 2003 sales is probably a better indicator of future sales.
