Is Indie Blue Going Away?

<

p>

This rather shocking news comes from MINI2 and Paul Mullet:

“Word on the grape vine is that in summer '04 our (my) beloved Indi Blue will be no more for the MINI range.

I thought that was a bit of a shocker, but it appears to be true.

Good news is it seems another blue will take it's place, but will be as good as Indi Blue? Who knows.”

Here's the MINI2 thread: Adieu Indi Blue?!. BMW has long had a history of changing color hues slightly every 2-4 years and this seems to fall into that catagory. It looks like next summer will bring quite a few changes into the MINI range.

You've got to be kidding. I purposely waited to get my MCS since Indi Blue wasn't initially offered and I love it. I see so many Indi Blue Coopers — it must be one of the most popular colors here in SoCal.

Sometimes I wonder if anyone at MINI US corporate pays enough attention at the top level to these kinds of product details — no fog lights for the US, remove the rear power outlet, alarm programming missing for 2004 models, and on and on and then later fixes and updates. All this back and forth on product decisions and things slipping through is mystifying.

This isn't a MINIUSA desicion but a worldwide change from MINI.

  • Court

For purely selfish reasons, I love this decision. I have an Indi Blue/White Cooper on order (expected delivery next month) and now it will be a little more unique!

  • http://users.adelphia.net/~rocketboy/index.html Rocketboy_X

This is another bit of sad news… I would have a Indi Blue MCS right now if they had offered it in the first year.. Granted, I love my Chili Red, but it's just kinda sad that we are going to lose Indi Blue, but we still have Gold, and two shades of silver…

  • Shawn

Oh, I know this isn't a MINIUSA decision and I'm sure they provide feedback on the US market to MINI but it just seems mystifying to me about some of the product decisions that have been made (like removing stuff the rest of the world gets, etc. or what seems to be popular here in the US market).

  • http://bridger.us/mini Gabe

I would agree that there are some decisions made that defy logic. That being said I can't complain that much – the US gets lots of options standard and low prices on many others in comparison to other parts of the world.

… and Chevy Nomads no longer are offered in Sea Mist.

Remember that Henry Ford offered “any color you want, as long as it's black.”

Granted, there seems to be a great deal of confusion on what to sell in the North American market, but color changes are a fact in the auto industry.

  • http://www.aminivacationinvegas.com Dominic Tuso

I wonder if Orange will replace it?

  • soylentrob

I think change is good. The more they change the colors the more unique MINIs we'll see on the road.

Plus, now my IB/W will be that much more special, just like a Velvet Red or Silk Green.

  • Max

Sad to see the color go away. I was gonna choose Indie Blue when it was my time to buy.

If MINI is going to replace it with another blue, I hope it's something similar to my brother's Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution “Blue By You”.

  • Paul C.

This is all speculation until it's anounced but how soon will it be gone?? I'm supposed to order my car by late Nov/Dec for Jan/Feb built and Indi Blue/W S was going to be my choice. Thought I would be less mainstream then picking something like Dark Silver/Grey.

The more this new updated/facelift speculation on mid 04 info comes out the more I think I'm picking my cooper at the wrong time?? I've waited almost 7 months now!!

  • http://www.chicagominiclub.com Matt

[faux indignation] Dark Silver mainstream!?!? i see more blues and reds than DS on the road. heck i've seen more yellows than DS. besides, DS looks fantastic under street lamps in the city.[/faux indignation]

  • http://bridger.us/mini Gabe

I don't know – I seemingly see lots of Dark Silver daily. I think something rare would be BRG or Pepper White.

  • soylentrob

Dark Silver has got to be the most popular color for the S in the Evanston area. I love the color but didn't want to be the fourth DS on the block.

You don't see many BRG, but it's hard to tell since they look black any time other than high noon.

    I kid, I kid.

  • Paul C.

Hey no flame inteded with the Dark Silver comment, It was my close second choice and it looks great on a mini.

  • http://www.chicagominiclub.com Matt

over here on the NW side i'm only the 5th MINI in the area i've seen, 2 blue, 2 red. i roam pretty far, Wilmette, Lake Bluff (more often than i'd like), Schaumburg, Naperville, Down Town, and i'd say i notice more Pure Silver than anything else. I'd be curious to learn what the sales numbers reveal.

  • http://omor.com/mini/ dc

the dark IB/W looks great. If MINI needs a new blue, I hope they find something more like Avus blue (e36 m) than estoril blue (smurf / e46 m3 / mitsu evo).

  • Traveler

Indi Blue is the most popular color in the November 03 Club. That may be a statistical fluke but it seems like they are killing it as it's popularity peaks. Oh well… might as well go out on top. Looks like I'll get my IB/IB just in time.

  • http://users.adelphia.net/~rocketboy/index.html Rocketboy_X

Yellow and the darker of the two silvers are quite popular over here in Western New York.. . I'm suprised at all of the Yellow MINIs, but silver is the 'trendy' color of cars lately, so that does not suprise me… I'd be guessing that orange is the next MINI color, as that's slated to be the coolest color after silver sneaks up on the saturation point…

  • peter

I won't believe it until I see the notice from MINI. Indi Blue is too popular to just delete, IMHO

  • http://www.mini2.nl quicksilver

Orange….thats ONLY for the MINI OPEN. There is comming a new bleu, also for the MINI OPEN, its a bit between dark-silver & indy blue. These 2 colors are not for the other MINI's

  • http://www.teammightyminiz.com Doug

I think it's a good decision. Keep the colors moving. Hope the new colors are BITCHIN!

  • LTL M CPE

dc, are you possibly mixing up two of BMW's blues? Estoril blue is the bright light/medium metalic blue that was one of the signature E36 M colors. The blue typically known as smurf blue is Laguna Seca blue which came out with the E46 M's.
I myself find the Estoril one of BMW's most beautiful colors, especially on certain cars. Laguna Seca blue is one most people aren't too fond of. BWM has a habit of changing the colors often on their cars, especially the metallic blues. The E36 line shows this as the medium to dark blues changed every couple years it seems and often the change was very slight. Non-car fans for instance couldn't tell the difference between Maritous Blue and the Avus Blue that followed it. Based on past history there's a strong chance the new MINI blue won't be far from the Indie Blue.

I'm one that's all for getting the orange in production too!

    Jim

    02 DS/W MCS 99 Estoril M coupe :)

  • Ryan

When I'm out and about, by far the biggest compliment I get on my IB/W Cooper is how “beautiful that color of blue is.” It'll be a sad loss.
