BMW Tuner Dinan Enters the MINI Market

Dinan is a highly regarded BMW tuner that often matches all of BMW's factory warranties with their modifications. They typically offer the mods ala cart or in “Dinan stages”. Here's an excerpt from Dinan's latest newsletter:

Dinan began the evaluation and development process for performance enhancements with two Cooper S models and one naturally aspirated Mini Cooper the moment the cars became available. Having access to the three cars has enabled our engineering team to work on several different areas of performance tuning simultaneously in the interest of shortening the development time frame. While we recognize that some other “tuners” have already introduced performance products such as exhaust systems, designing and producing quality products that actually enhance performance, as well as backing them up with the most comprehensive warranty in the industry does take time. Dinan is rarely first to market, but certainly first in performance.

Our primary focus has been on the Cooper S models to date, with the fairly obvious goals of enhanced power and acceleration, as well as even sharper handling characteristics. Miles and miles of shall we say “spirited” driving have provided our development team with the data necessary to improve the performance of an already well designed, fun to drive car. As with all Dinan products, our philosophy of enhanced performance without sacrificing driveability or reliability carries through to the MINI performance product line as well. And as you might expect, Dinan will offer our industry leading warranty, matching the MINI new vehicle warranty coverage year to year, mile to mile and bumper to bumper.

Both the supercharged and naturally aspirated versions of the cars are being treated to intake and exhaust enhancements, very much in keeping with the approaches used to extract more power from BMW models. Naturally performance and driveability will be optimized with Dinan engine management software, specifically calibrated for the various combinations of Dinan performance products. Initially, there will be two engine performance programs offered for the Cooper S.

Analysis

The Stage II kit will probably be very popular for MCS owners. The combination of matching the output of the JCW kit while costing much less and including a warranty that matches MINI's will raise some eye brows in the aftermarket arena. Combine that with one of the most trusted names in BMW tuning and you have a potential winner on your hands. But beyond increased power Dinan is also promising it's own version of just about every key performance modification out there – everything from suspension pieces, forged wheels, and even limited slip.

The biggest question I see at this point is will the late start will hurt Dinan?

I think Dinan took too long to hit the MINI Market and their only saving grace will be the warranty issue.

Amongst some of the current and upcoming mods, I can't see how they will “catch up” to the current market and make a profit. Dinan on a MINI will be like wearing a 3 Karat diamond on an aluminium wedding band… take that how you may.

Naaa.. this is exactally why I have not jumped on the next greatest mod for my MINI… not that I was waiting for Dinan, but in order to let the field grow, so the best parts really become the best parts… And as long as people are still buying MINIs, how can a well know and respected company have a 'late' start? They don't have to establish a name for themselves, as they already have the love and respect that many small tuner companies are still striving for.

This sounds great, but one question: Who installs this stuff? Do they have their own garages or do you have to find someone to put this together for you?

  • http://bridger.us/mini Gabe Bridger

I imagine they'll use “certified Dinan dealers” to install everything. Basically that means that some MINI dealers will be Dinan dealers. Just like some BMW dealers are Dinan certified dealers. That's what I'm assuming at least.

Gabe, I'd say you're correct about the dealer thing. My dealer here in Richmond has had a Mini flag in their service department with the Dinan “D” on it for a few months now.

I really think this will be a huge hit. Dinan! Well respected with warrenty and prices that I feel are right inline with what the market will bear. Forget the JCW kit…

  • zakdog

I'm trying to figure out why MINI dealers would install this versus their own comparable JCW kit but for less money…

I agree with the validity of the “late entry” comment. How does it hurt Dinan when they have the rep and the price to beat? I believe most people will switch to anything if the product is good and fairly priced.

I think that this is great. If the parts are available as pieces, rather than exclusively as kits, everyone will come out ahead. Imagine people (like me) who think that a reduction pulley on an MCS is a no-brainer, but who doesn't want to void the warranty. I'd be willing to drop an extra $100 or so and let a dealer install it and enjoy the performance and the piece of mind of retaining my warranty.

Also, I really enjoy how Dinan casually sneers at the other “tuners” already on the market!

Went into the dealer yesterday to check on my order, swear they stopped the ship in Panama for a few beers. I saw the first Dinan to be introduced at BMW of San Francisco Almost half the price of the current JCW with a warranty. Was a very sharp looking kit, what I could see. Oh and what does a reduction pulley do for my MCS?

I own a 2002 15000 mile Mini Cooper S. I had a JCW package minus the airbox and accompanying software update installed by a dealer. $6000 later the car is slower and burns more fuel than in stock configuration. I then had the airbox, injector, and recalibration software installed. It was a small improvement but at a total cost of $7000. I’m looking for handling upgrades:Dinan or JCW!

I just baught my MCS 2 months ago and have the stage 3 Dinan suspention, air intake and stage 3 engine software on order. I live in New Jersey and there is only one Dinan authorized dealer 70 miles north of where I live. I have herd nothing but good things about Dinan. I have a 3 series as well and depending on how these dinan parts are on my mini I plan to go w/them for the Bimmer as well, I chose Dinan over JCW for one because stock tuners always charge more because they know they can. and two Dinan has the prestige that I think is up there with the European tuners AC Schnitzer Alpena or Hamann. Having that Dinan Badge on the back of any BMW or Min is golden.

I just had the Dinan S2 kit installed and it was worth every penny! I have an ’06 MCS and it was starting to get “boring” after 6100 miles. So, I got on the phone and called Dinan. Although I had to wait a month and a half for the parts to be delivered to the MINI dealership; once it was installed, it is a dream to drive. The Stage 3 suspension rides much better than the stock suspension, even with the run-flats (I plan to replace the OEM Dunlops with Toyo Proxes 4 UHPAS). The power delivery with the engine mods is absolutely stunning. The technician at the dealership said that after he test drove it, he felt that it pulls stronger than the GP Works package!
