3-Spoke Steering Wheel Prices Updated

It would appear that MINIUSA has now fixed it's website to reflect the correct pricing on the soon to be released 3-Spoke Steering Wheel. The new wheel is now a no cost option on the Premium Package and the same $350 as the 2-spoke wheel as a stand along option.

Analysis

In my mind this is exactly what MINIUSA should be doing – offering both wheels at either the same standalone price or as a no cost option on the the Premium Package. This gives all those soon to be '04 MINI owners who so dislike the 3-spoke a chance to easily spec it out of the equation. Yet all this has to make one wonder if they made the desicion to go this route because of all the negative responses they've seen on sites like this since pictures of the new wheel showed up last spring. Could it be that MINIUSA listens to sites like this and takes owners opinions seriously? Or is that MINIUSA felt that the 3-spoke wheel wouldn't prove overly popular and they didn't want to have the possibility of jeopardizing any sales because of it. All interesting possibilities.

I think it simply indicates that they mis-programmed the web site initially. Screw ups happen.

I have no doubt that it was an error on the website and this is probably what was called for all along. But I'm thinking that MINIUSA made the desicion to go this route because of all the negative responses it's seen on sites like this since pictures of the new wheel showed up last spring.

It is great to hear that MINI is offering both styles as an option. I applaud MINIUSA for listening to their most fanatical customers (us) to help them with future product decisions. This looks like a win/win for everyone.

I just ordered my 2004 MC, and I made damn sure, that three spoke wheel wasnt in my specs.

I guess that explains why they're raising the price of the mcs in january.

Gabe, sorry about the misundestanding. While I do think they read these sites, I suspect the option to have the 3-spoke (rather than making it the default) was always planned as they're stated goal has always been to continue to diversify the choices for personalizing the Mini. This emphasis on personalization is also consistent with their desire to keep Minis in a “build to order” mode rather than having dealer's spec'ing cars and having them sit on lots. Pesonalization is a way of localizing demand to niches which supports flat MSRP pricing, thus maintaing margins for both Munich and the dealer network.

They're doing a great job of it! I think we're witnessing the first really successful attempt at factory-supported internet car marketing and just-in-time building of custom vehicles. Dell did it for computers and now BMW is doing it with cars.

I have a question about something near the steering wheel.

I have noticed, on some cars, at the end of the windshield washer switch lever a red end or button or something. I have only seen it in pics of Euro cars. even though I imagine it may be on US cars also.

Any clues as too what that is all about?

Robert – When you order the alarm you get a new washer stalk with a blinking red end.

For a photo of the alarm pieces see : http://www.miniyaletown.net/ and look under ” accessories -interior.”

    Thanks Ian.
