The 2005 MINI Cabrio Interior Revealed

<

p>

For quite awhile the MINI world has been awash with rumors of “drastic” changes to the interior of the new Cabrio and the '05 MINI in general. Well thanks to MINI2 and Paul Mullet (who once again scored leaked photography) I'm happy to report that you can change the word “dramatic” to subtle. MINI has clearly massaged the interior but kept the original look completely in tact. Here's an excerpt of the MINI2 article:

As you can clearly see (click the image for an enlarged view) the “new” interior is not that different at all in appearance to the current car. This leaked photograph reveals some of the changes we have already written about on MINI2, but a picture is worth a thousand words, and we do aim to please! The first thing we noticed is the new, three part dashboard. The Air Bag has been moved to above the hard plastic dash surfaces (you can just work out the text “Air Bag” above the left hand side vent). This means the dash is smoother, with no break required for the hinged panel in front of the passenger. It could also hopefully mean less of the dreaded creaks and rattles for new owners.

Another change that you may have to squint a little harder to see is the previously reported locking glove box. The hinge looks the same as before, save for the need for a key hole, of course! You can also see the new three spoke multi function steering wheel, which is already in production and being delivered to new MINI purchasers.

The sharp eyed among you may also have picked out the chrome rings around the dials. We understand that MINI will offer a chrome interior pack to new customers from the factory, as well as a dealer retrofit option. It is unclear whether you will be able to order selective rings for just the dials and vents you wish, or if you will have to order them as a set. We certainly hope these are competitively priced as the current aftermarket options often seem to be very expensive.

Mostly, we hope that picture will put to rest any fears that BMW will somehow be “messing up” the interior, as we've reported on MINI2 for some time, the changes we believe they have in store for us are minor, and should improve quality, as well as offering visual design tweaks, nips and tucks.

But, what about the rumoured “Lexus Style” “Chronograph” new dials that MINI have been reported as introducing? Well, as we've maintained since these rumours first surfaced, these will be an optional extra, not standard fit, and they will not dramatically affect the car's appearance.

For our last New Year's treat, this exclusive design drawing of the new dials should give you a good impression of how the finished article will appear. The speedo will be moved along side the rev counter if specified.

Hmmm… The interior changes are pretty subtle… I'm keeping an open mind, but I don't think I like the chronograph style gauges. Now the big question will be to order a 2005 MCS or try to find/order a current 2004 model. Is there going to be a big upgrade to the seats/cupholders/suspension that we haven't heard about? More importantly, will there be significant changes to the MCS?

I still don't like that Gameboy steering wheel :(

The MINI Convertible rear interior looks nicely done. I don't want one, but I still look forward to seeing one …

  • ANTSMINI

Man this gets worse and worse. First the new ricey looking tail lights and now that horrible speedometer. I am so glad I have my MINI already. People shouldnt mess with a good thing. Especially on a car thats only been out for a few years.

  • http://bridger.us/mini Gabe

Since the new gauges are optional extras you could easily order an '05 MINI that looks pretty much identical to any that came before.

Gabe: Thanks for confirming the fact that I like my 2003 just fine!

  • Benjamin

The sides of the convertible where the top frames rest look unfinished. Can't Mini cover these so it looks nicer? A lot of convertibles with power tops have powered cover flaps the raise and lower to facilitate lowering/raising the convertible frames.

  • Josh

Gabe or Ian, heard anthing about the seats or suspension?

About the last comment: the reason the mini doesnt have a toneau cover is because there is just not enough room. Also, the roof sits on top of the boot, not in it, so thats another problem. They may do a zip-on cover (i.e. the beatle cabrio)

  • http://bridger.us/mini Gabe

From my info what you see is what you'll get. There will be no toneau cover.

The suspension will be altered but I don't think it'll be introduced for the start of the '05 model year. And yes the seats will be redesigned as well but again I'm not sure when they plan to implement the changes in terms of actual production.

  • John

Maybe someone can educate me here.

I've heard of the concern about the convertible being less “peppy” than the hard top models due to added weight for the top and the open/close mechanism. Is this correct?

For one, I fail to see how a ragtop weighs more than a metal top, especially one with a sunroof and all the accompanying hardaware. Second, it would seem that the weight differential of having a passenger (or just a big assed driver ;)) would be more than any weight impact from a convertible. Does anyone here notice big handling/power changes with a passenger in the car? I don't. Maybe I'm missing something?

    TIA, John

When you chop off the roof of any car it greatly reduces the overall structural integrity or stiffness. To address this issue and to create a cabrio with more rock solid feel and less wiggle MINI will have to greatly enhance the structure of the car. In doing this they will be increasing the weight and thus decreasing the performance. That's why you'll see many owners very interested in performance opt for the coupe rather than the open top when it comes to cars such as the BMW M3 etc.

And we're not talking about adding 25 or even 50 pounds when a convertible is created out of a coupe. We're talking about 200-300+ in many cases. Granted we don't know any specific numbers yet and the MINI is starting out with an incredibly stiff shell but I would assume there the cabrio will have a decent weight penalty.

  • John

Ah, so I was missing something. (Big surprise.)

So what you're saying is if I get a convertible, I'll also need to get the Worx package to make up for it?

Cool. I'm off to tell the wife you said that. ;)

    Thx. J

  • http://bridger.us/mini Gabe

Just tell her that's the only way it comes ;)

The 3 spoke steering wheel is actually in production for 2004 and is an optional extra on both the Cooper and the Cooper S now. Most of the cars are shipped with the Multifunction steering wheel, which will most likely continue to be offered.

It looks like the leaked picture is that of a Cooper without the Automatic A/C that is offered as a part of the Premium package on the hardtop versions. I know a Cooper S cabrio will be offered shortly after the Cabrio. If you like pep, it might be wise to just wait.

There is already a waiting list for the Cabrio and most dealers are going to be selling over retail MSRP.

Raina – You may want to check some of the more recent stories on the cabrio and the 2005 MINI. There is now a ton of new information out there and some of us have actually been hands on with a number of Cabrios.

This story was from Jan. 1 btw.

How much of a weight difference is there between the the cooper and cooper cabriolet, and is there any increase in hp.

    THanks
