MINIUSA Sales Down 15.5% for July

Gasp! Is the bottom falling out? Is the MINI success over? Oh wait… dealers didn't have any cars to sell due to the early 2005 model year change over. So chalk up the decline (and subsequent lost sales) to unfortunate timing and less than stellar US production planning. Here's are the details from MINIUSA Press:

MINI USA reported continued demand for MINI automobiles, resulting in extremely low inventories. Sales of MINI automobiles in July were 2,607, down 15.5 percent from the 3,084 sold in July of 2003. Year-to-date, sales of MINI automobiles were down slightly, with 20,419 cars compared to 20,614 sold a year ago, a dip of 1 percent.

I wonder what the numbers are when they look at orders placed, etc. Sales are equated to delivery, but like you point out, there have been no MINI's available for delivery. Or at least, a limited amount. I suspect demand is strong as ever if they look at orders placed and even orders pending, etc. Jut my two cents. :o)

    Oh – no question.

I wonder how many cars went unordered. How many 04s are going to sit on lots in favor of the 05. Its not just a matter of special order vs. not. Now its a matter of order vs. last years model.

The dealer I bought my MINI from received a shipment of at least twenty end of production 2004s. As fast as they are moving down here in Florida I am wondering how they will dispose of all these 2004s while other dealers are showing a new model (the cabriolet) and model year.

Coming into July we had almost 30 unsold Coopers. Through pre-selling we got that down to 10 or so, and now we have about 6 left. I don't think we'll have any trouble moving '04s, especially since we're now ordering for October production for both MCs and MCSs.

From my dealership you can actually get a convertible of either type faster than a hardtop! :)

    Foolsdragon-

Where are you located??? I might take a road trip.

    Robyn –

Send me an e-mail, I'd rather not make it public for fear of looking like I'm trying to cash in on Gabe's awesome site. :)
