Gabe,

Thanks for emailing me directly regarding the pricing and availability of the R99 wheels. Your friend in MINI parts informed me that there are different prices for each type of finish on the R99 wheels.

The SILVER wheels are $280 each when ordered from MINI. The ANTHRACITE are $297 each and the POLISHED are $409 each when ordered from MINI Parts.

Unfortunately, I was (and maybe I still am) interested in the POLISHED wheels.

Gabe,

I have a MCSC on order which should arrive in mid-December. I would like to upgrade the 17" wheels to the new R99 wheels. You stated above that the pricing would be $280 per wheel.

I called BBS and found out that they don't have access to the wheels since they are an OEM product and probably only available through BMW/MINI. I checked with my MINI dealer in Arlington, Texas and they want to charge me the full price of $1,687 as shown on the web site, instead of $280 X 4 = $1,120, plus a little for for the center caps.

DO YOU KNOW WHERE I CAN PURCHASE THE R99 WHEELS FOR 4280 EACH?

right now i have the jcw 18" spider spoke wheels on my car. they look awesome, but too bad they are like boat anchors. but still, 28 pounds per wheel dosent slow me down at all especially with the jcw kit i have installed in my car. for autocross use, i bought a pair of 17" BBS R90's. they definately handle better, and are around the same weight as the new double spoke wheels. 280 bucks per rim isnt much considering that they are BBS manufactured in germany. my R90's were around 450 per wheel, now that sounds more like a BBS rim right there. plus, the double spoke wheels are only one piece. the R90's are 2 piece rims, so they are of a higher build quality.

Centerline has some 17" wheels that go for about $180 (at least where I saw them being sold). They are rotary forged so they end up being about the same weight as 15s or 16s. This is where I would shop if I went looking for S-lite replacements.

With stock tire sizes all three wheel sizes on the MINI have the same outside diameter for the tires. So no gearing advantage there.

re the "unsprung weight" argument and performance, I gotta admit I'm pretty dubious that 4 lbs per wheel, 16 lbs overall, is going to make a ton of difference in performance on a 2600 lb car.

From a layman's point of view, I wonder if smaller wheels handle better because they act kind of like smaller gears between you and the road. A 15" wheel vs. a 17" wheel is like having 12% smaller gear spinning to make the car accelerate.

On the other hand, those R99's look pretty cool, especially the picture of them on the orange ragtop.

Sorry - meant to type in ADR wheels, anyways... I still think that the pricepoints are high at MINI and I am entitled to my opinion, that is why I went elsewhere, and I am satisfied with my Wheel/tire combo. I originally got the idea from looking at all the wheel selections on MINI 2 wheel gallery, great stuff on there!!! I just want to make it clear that this is my opinion and I don't want to correct anyone else on their opinion. - Bye

Let's not limit ourselves... Konig and ADS make GREAT looking wheels, plus at least seven or eight other brands. Just open a Sport Compact Car mag. and you will see there is a whole world of wheels out there, yes I agree, there are a lot of wheels out there that are below aftermarket standards, but don't use BBS as your guide. To each his or her own homey.

Tom....
you may want to re-think what you've said. where on earth are you gonna find BBS wheels for $100-$175???
you get what you pay for homey...

they look really good, but performance and price wise there are much better deals available. i'm glad to see that MINI is making an effort to offer something to replace the S-NotSoLites. it is the right direction

I think this wheel is a nice design, but I drive a MINI Cooper, not a 7 Series BMW. Those prices are outragous! I can go on any wheel/tire site and get something close and pay 109.00 to 175.00 a wheel, also for the price of four (R99) wheels I could get four 17/7 wheels plus nice treads and get them delivered to my door with free shipping ready-balanced to go on my MINI. MINI needs to rethink their pricepoints, just because most MINI dealers are attached to BMW dealerships does not mean we want to pay the same prices.

Joe -

No. The R99 wheels will be purely aftermarket wheels, and not available from the factory. This means that they are an accessory, not a factory option, so you'll be paying to upgrade to them.

Some dealers provide a trade-in credit for the OEM wheels, some don't. Consult your MA for your dealer's policy.

If one specs the sports pkg on an MCS it includes the 17" S-lites. If you want the R99's do you have to 'delete' the package, spec the wheels and the other items separately?

i doubt they come in white, they look to sporty, like how the R90's arent available in white, i saw a hyper blue mcs today at the mini dealer, it was nice, looks cheaper than the 04 though, i dont like that black grille plate where the 04 reverse light is
