The 2005 JCW Kit to get New Injectors

We've picked up a few more details on the 2005 JCW kit for the MCS. Apparently one of the big differences between the '04 and the '05 is that the new kit will have new/improved injectors. The result should be around 210hp.

Also of interest I was recently told that the 2005 JCW kits are still at least two months away from being available in the US. Unfortunately we still don't have pricing but I would expect pricing to be about the same as the previous kit.

2 months? say it ain't so joe!

My MCS is waiting on a dock in south hampton. I was plamming on waiting and picking it up after it was JCW'd, but I don't know if I can wait until november.

Anyone have advice? Should I just pick it up and then try to justify the JCW to the wife later. (I already have her bought in if I lump it in now)

  • Mike

If your wife is even the least bit rational I think you could explain to her that it's the same cost diffused over a few months instead of all at once, so it shouldn't make a difference in her agreeing to let you do it.

  • Dave& Stacy

Hmmm…2 months huh? Well, we have already collected our 2005 MCS and paid for a 2005 JCW Kit which will be put on as soon as it arrives (dealer said early October). I can tell you we did not pay any more for the 2005 kit than the 2004 kit.

  • Timothy Sipples

How far back will the 2005 JCW kit go? Is it just for the 2005 builds?

  • JimV

In all fairness, I didn't mean my wife… I meant my own sensible side.

Anyone that would call the JCW upgrade sensible isn't getting it for the right reasons ;)

Anyway, my dealer is about 1,500 miles away, so I likely won't be driving back there to get it installed.

So my options are… 1) wait until JCW is available in the US and then pick it up.

    2) Pick it up and then have it installed later

    3) loose the argument to my sensible side and just pick it up and forget about mods all together

    Hmmph..

  • Mike

Jim, you forgot the last one:

    4) consider mods that are worth what you pay for them. Then both your sensible side and non-sensible side are both happy, it's a win-win. ;)

  • Frank

Can the 210hp 2005 JCW kit be installed in a '04 MCS??

  • JCSS

Very cool Gabe. definitely a win-win situation. I ABSOLUTELY CANNOT WAIT to test drive that beast!!!!!

  • JB

hhmmmmm!@$!@ ive ordered JCW but its being applied separately to avoid luxury car tax that would apply if i bought it as a single purchase. so end of october my mcs gets here, then JCW gets ordered. bigger injectors hopefully included!

  • http://www.motoringfile.com/ Gabe

Frank – a kit will be available for '03 and '04 JCW MINIs that will match output for the '05. No details yet.

  • Whitman

How 'bout some JCW Injector specs, Gabe? ;D

Frank, 10-to-1 says no matter what's possible, MINI dealers will be bravely coy about making an 05MY kit available for your 04MY MCS. Big money in the trunk on the pre-05 kits sees them getting installed for $4500. [Full shelves.]

  • JCSS

Big money is right. But i'll be the first in line!!! BLESS YOU MINI!!!!

  • Charlie

According to Classic MINI, the JCW Kits for the 04 and earlier models are not compatible with the '05 Models. Accordingly they find themselves with some “excess inventory”, and will sell you the '04 Kit at a killer price, plus a $1,000 refundable core charge for the blower and head. Supplies are limited. Check with Brian or Steve at Classic. BMWparts@classicautocampus.com

So are the injectors the principal component of the “JCW Upgrade” that was talked about a few weeks ago, costing around $500? Any mention of a Cold Air Intake or new ECU Programming? Charlie

  • http://www.motoringfile.com/ Gabe

Charlie – I think it's a little premature at this point to think in those terms. Hopefully there will be more info soon.

  • http://www.motoringfile.com/ Gabe

Timothy – the '05 kit will only be available to the '05 MCS. However, according to sources there will be a extra kit available from JCW for all other MCSs that will bring the power up to '05 levels.

  • scooblymonchee

Hmmm… 10hp on top of 200 peak (5%) doesn't sound like a dramatic increase. I'm assuming the big difference is going to be felt in the low end – more power/torque earlier, more linear response (zzz). Call me old school, but I'm a fan of an engine with a relatively narrow, peaky power band – one that you have to wring power out of by keeping the revs up. Much more fun to play with, even if the absolute numbers are inferior. I'll test drive the new version, but I'm guessing that I'll end up sticking with my first gen JCW.

Still waiting to see if they do anything on the intake side, the one thing not touched by JCW. Holding off on installing an intake till I know for sure the '05 upgrade changes it or not.

JimV,tell the wife that waiting a few more months to get the '05 JCW kit, will increase the resale value of the MINI;not to mention, the cool points you'll get from her for getting a fully tricked-out MINI that'll make a great conversation piece.

  • Patrick

Ok I'm lost here… I thought that the 200hp JCW ran pretty rich already. So adding larger injectors would let you dump more fuel in an already rich mix?

I don't see how adding injectors to a rich mix gets you 10hp. Gabe hear of anything else? Also, I thounght official specs were due out about now.

  • Bob Reilly

Just got this e-mail from my MA. Is this true? I have NEVER seen this mentioned anywhere.

“You can put the JCW kit anytime. The difference is the warranty. If you put it on before you pick up the car you get the full 4/50 for the kit. After the fact you would get a 2 year.”

  • scooblymonchee

I'm totally with you Patrick. Larger injectors aren't making much sense to me either. The only way I can see this is if the 05 kit increases intake flow as well – via intake/throttle body?

  • Patrick

Scooby it would make more sense for them to add a TB & intake and claim 210hp versus adding injectors. From the A/F charts I've seen the JCW could make upwards of 210hp with the stock injectors. If they were going for 220hp maybe but I don't see the point at 210hp. Plus, since air is the thing lacking adding fuel won't make more power and will probably be worse for emissions increasing the amount of unburned fuel.

If they are shooting for 210hp I don't understand new injectors.

  • http://www.motoringfile.com/ Gabe

That is just one of the changes that was mentioned to me by someone from MINI. There will be a few others.

  • JCSS

Wow, all this feedback is just supreme. ABSOLUTELY CANNOT WAIT to get my hands on my new Mini. Just dreaming about the options… PLUS I plan on some sweet mods. COOL!!!!

  • Rick B.

Maybe the new injectors with new ECM technology, more is going on than just dumping fuel in. I'd give em the benifit of the doubt. They run these on dynos for improvement, and I'm sure your not going to be at any loss. Maybe it will be like a four barrel effect!

  • Scott

JimV – from my MINI tech – Adding JCW kit after initial break-in appears to make the car a little faster than a JCW installed when the car is brand new. Don't know the truth to that, but…

Charlie – that $1000 core refund should already be part of the deal, not something special. If it is, then Classic has been ripping people off.

Can't wait for the JCW stage 2 for my '04MCS JCW.

Thanks for the update Gabe – keep 'em coming!
