Cooper-Tuning: Still more Mini-Power

With an optimized Works-Tuning-Kit Mini raises the performance of the Cooper S. The 210-HP Option Package celebrates its premiere at the Paris Auto Salon.

To make the Mini Cooper S even livelier, Mini house tuner John Cooper Works has again revised its Tuning-Kit. A compressor with higher RPM and air pressure, intake valves with higher throughput, a modified cylinder head, a redeveloped air cleaner housing,a modified ECU, and a special exhaust system should now coax 210 HP and a maximum torque of 245 Nm [180.7 lbf by my calculator] from the 1.6-Liter engine.

The handling of the Brit also wins. The Mini should storm from zero to 100 km/h in only 6.6 seconds, with a top speed of 230 km/h for the Tuning-Variant. As for fuel economy, the Mini is calculated to consume 8.6 Liters per 100 Kilometers.

The new Tuning-Kit will be available in Germany from the end of September and should cost around €4400. Naturally the full factory warranty remains in effect after installation.

Even more Works-Accessories

Also available from John Cooper Works are a lower suspension that drops the Mini 10 millimeters, a [Cathedral?] brace for the motor compartment, 18-inch alloy wheels, sport seats, and additional modifications such as an air intake and carbon-fiber interior trim.

A sound kit for the Cooper is in development, consisting of an air filter, a sport exhaust and a revised ECU, that adds another three HP. Likewise, at the end of the year Cooper Works will offer sport brakes, characterized by larger brake disks on the front axle with red painted calipers.

TRANSLATOR'S NOTE:

It's been ten years since I lived in Germany and read car magazines over there, so a few terms were beyond both my memory and my dictionary. Going backwards through the text, the second (Domstrebe) I can take from context as probably a lateral brace in the engine compartment — it literally translates as “cathedral brace.” The first, however, might be the source of some confusion as to whether the new JCW comes with new injectors. The German word is “Einspritzventile.” Break that in two and you get “injection valves” — I take this to mean INTAKE valves (for air), not new INJECTORS (for fuel) but I could be wrong. Intake valves with higher throughput would be much more likely to produce more power at higher RPM, and would be much more effective (IME, at least) than fuel injectors with higher throughput. As somebody commented elsewhere here, the engine already runs rich as it is.

JCW, not to leave the 04 & 03 Kit owners left out, are supposed to be creating an “upgrade kit” to be retrofitted to existing installed Kits to boost the HP level up to that of the 05, but the details as to what this upgrade will cost or what it contains is still up in the air.

Earlier reports on Motoringfile said the kit would sell for around $500, plus the cost of dealer labor to install.
