Dension has made a key upgrade to its already popular Ice>Link iPod adapter (reviewed last spring). For those that don't know the Ice>Link was the first to integrate the iPod and the MINI's radio controls (including the multi-function steering wheel) in simple yet effective process.
But this new version has several key improvements over the previous version. The Ice>Link not only has all of the functionality inherent in the iPod (being able to choose any playlist, album, artist, etc directly from the iPod) but now also takes on the functionality that the official MINI iPod adapter delivers and more. Dual mode operation (as Dension calls it) means that you can use your radio or iPod user interface to navigate through playlists, albums and songs. The Ice>Link Plus translates your vehicle's head unit commands into iPod commands emulating a fully loaded CD changer with advanced features.
That means you can also select playlists from the iPod or from the head unit itself. This is especially important in helping drivers keep their eyes on the road as opposed to their iPods. This essentially takes the best of both worlds and effectively one-ups the official adapter.
But there's one other key thing the new Ice>Link Plus offers. ID3 text display. The new adapter now allows you to read the song title and artist information right from your radio. This is the same information that is typically displayed on your iPod. ID3 tag display works on head units that support text display, something the MINI's unit is indeed capable of doing.
Ice>Link Plus will retail for $199 and will be available December 1st.
You can read about the new adapter here.
Updated: Tom Guagliardo from Dension has cleared up some of the questions we had about the Ice>Link Plus:
We have a planned firmware update that will be released shortly thereafter for the ID3v2 Text support on the BMW and Mini displays, this will support both the Multi-Functional Displays and Navigation units.
When the firmware is released, it will be available as a free upgrade from our website. Load the software into your iPod and flash the ice>Link and ID3v2 support will be added!

methinks i've found my solution…. thanks gabe!

Does the ID3 text display work on the OEM MINI head unit? If so, this one's a total winner.

… and let me guess. It doesn't work if you have the Nav System installed. :-(

Can anyone confirm that the unit works with the 2005 minis? The site only says 2002-2004, but as far as I've read, there is no difference with the radios which would indicate it isn't capable. I would also like to get a comfirmation, like Mike wants, that the ID3 text will work on the minis…

If this does work 100% like they say, and being an apple fan this is hard to say, I think they may have outdown apple on the adapter by leaps and bounds…

So, it's not 100% clear to me from the website: Is the MINI Radio (I have H/K) compatible with ID3 text display?

Thoughts, or even better, facts?

C – it's not 100% clear to me either. I'm just assuming the MINI head unit supports this. It supports text tags for FM radio so it seems to have a scrolling text function built in.

Wow….While I am delighted to read this, I am more than a bit surprised and a tad ticked off that when I ordered my ICE link a mere 4 -5 days ago they never mentioned this update! Well, seeing as how I haven't even received it yet, I am returning it pronto when it arrives and having a chat with the salesperson…they sure better allow me to exchange it!

Melanie – I'm with you! Just recieved my Ice-Link on Thursday. The Dension USA page lists the Ice-link Plus shipping on December 1.

wow, the is way better than the official BMW/MINI solution

Totally AWESOME addition – cannot wait to get this thing up and running! Kudos and go bless!!!

Wow, I got my IceLink back in April and now I want to upgrade to IceLink Plus because of the ID Tag feature. Dension is awesome!

A quick search on both http://www.mini2.com and http://www.northamericanmotoring.com lends me to believe that there is no such id3 tag support for the mini stereo.

From what I've read it has something to do with BMW considering it a distraction, at least that is their excuse.

Don't get your hopes up.

Then how does the id3 tags differ from RDS text that the radio can already display.

For those of you with the '05 head unit, does it display the ID3 tags for MP3 burned discs? If so, then it should support the ID3 tags from the iPOD.

dgszweda-

I have an '05 and it does not display any tags when I play MP3 discs. But, I am using some older discs I happened to have that may not be “tagged” properly?

G.

Well this makes my choice between ICE/Link and the BMW/MINI wiring a lot easier.

If it interfaces through the satellite connection it should show text, Blitzsafe's XM adapter already forwards textual information to the head unit in this way.

I'm not sure if it will work if it instead uses the CD changer connection.

Regardless, it is already above and beyond BMW's offering.

Will the price still be $199?

I've had the ice>LINK for several months and it's great. If anyone is teetering on buying one, you don't know what you are missing- DO IT. I have the trunk mount kit, so installation was very easy and then purchased the Belkin iPod cup holder and it works great for holding it without being in the way.

I have tried several MP3 discs on my '05 MCS and the ID3 tags don't display. I've tried these discs on other headunits and they work fine.

Indeed, NAM posts are pretty definitive about no ID3 tag support on the head unit. Major bummer! Why, in any tech solution, is there always one tiny detail missing that prevents achieving complete perfection? I smell a vast tech-wing conspiracy…

OWNED!!! This is great news!

I'm with Caine. I got mine in August and I have been nothing but impressed with the Ice>LINK. In my opinion, there is nothing better. I Say “make the purchase, It's worth it” (or at least ask for it as a present, It is that time of year). I'm sure others would agree as well. Mine is attached to the passenger side down tube using the optional metal bracket and is not in the way of anything. I wish they had the “PLUS” version in august. Does anyone Know if the older version is upgradeable?

By the way Gabe, Thanks for the Holiday Buyers Guide. And, good luck.

Oh, this looks even better then the BMW one which still isn't available!

There's no question the head unit doesn't support ID3 tags on MP3 discs. However that doesn't necessarily mean that the Ice>Link Plus won't show the ID3 tags through the display. I hope to find out more soon.

Yes, Gabe, I think Dension needs a priority phone call from you with a horde of anxious MINI-fanatics at your back. :)

Emails were sent early yesterday :)

Folks,

I have heard from a very reliable source that the ICE LINK PLUS doesnt support the BMW and MINI radios right now but it will. Hopefully sometime before Christmas or first of next year. If you buy the PLUS it can be upgraded via the firmaware so you would be able to display song information. This is awesome news.

I will post any updates I receive.

Bob

This just might be the thing to get me to switch out my MINI head unit. I'm blessed with the original 2002 unit that doesn't have the aux input, I have to do all my XM radio and iPod via fuzzy FM transmitters.

But this is so cool, maybe I should get a new head unit so I can use it!

Gabe, can you setup a group by? I think the order would be substantial!!

My 2003 MCS with HK system head unit displays text information from FM radio stations in my city, when available.

It displays any message they put in. For instance, it displays (over a series of lines): WJZZ 107.5 – Atlanta's Number One Jazz Station – Dave Brubeck “Take Five”

So, I'm not convinced the OEM radio can't display ID3 tag information, since it's just text, and the OEM radio obviously can display text from external sources.

Also keep in mind that if you get the Sirius radio add-on, that the text describing what song is playing has to appear. I don't have it, but I assume it displays on the head unit's display right?

Well, I just spoke with Curtis at Dension. I have an ICElink on the way that I ordered last week. As I had expected, he told me that he's already had about 200 calls either to order the new ICE link, or calls like mine, to exchange just-ordered older versions with the “plus” version. While I waited, he chatted with the owner re: whether the text display/ID3 will display on the MINI's radio. He came back on and told me that the MINI's radio is indeed able to show ID3 tags. He then said that Dension will be sending out software to download to the iPod before the end of the year. When I asked what this will be for, he said “It's so the radio can display the iPod's text/tags”. Since the plus units are shipping out in then first 2 weeks of December (NOT December 1st), I asked if I can still use the ICElink even though I will not have the software yet. He said yes, but the radio won't display the ID3 info without the new software.

So, if I am understanding this correctly, it sounds as though the only purpose of the software is to enable the radio to recognize the tags on the iPod. I told him that there were many posts on this website stating that the MINI radio's were not capable of reading tags on MP3 discs. Since the software isn't going to change the radio, I wasn't sure how it would enable the tags to be displayed if they couldn't already be displayed (like with MP3 discs). He didn't understand that since his boss told him that the MINI radio WAS able to display them.
Where does that leave me? Still in the dark as far as to whether this “plus” version will actually do what we are all hoping it will do – display the text!
But, since it's 30 bucks cheaper than the one I just ordered, I guess it's a no-lose situation anyway…

Sounds to me like the ID3 tag question won't be sorted until someone actually gets their hands on the adapter and has a looksee for themselves after the install. I'm hoping for the best, as ID3 tags would be awesome, but it already seems like this solution is above and beyond what “the official” adapter allows – which is a bummer for Apple/MINI, but great for us users.

Guys the CD player's inability to read ID3 tags has nothing to do with an external device putting text on the headunit display. It is already done for RDS FM and Satellite. It is possible, and I'm sure they will do it with the new ice link.

Very cool! I was secretly hoping that that might be the case. Since the radio can display song info from radio stations, it obviously CAN show text. It sounds very very hopeful that the ICElink plus will indeed show text display (that is, with the new software installed)

Hey, this thing sounds perfect (and I was THAT close to getting the iPod kit installed). My only question: who installs the IceLink? I called the dealer and they've never heard of it. Neither has the local high-end car audio shop. And I certainly won't try it myself. Any thoughts? I'm in Seattle.

It is possible i guess that the text info is superimposed over the audio information, possibly as a digital code at a particular non audible frequency. This might explain why the ipod needs a software update in order to add the mp3 tag info to the audio signal. The iTrip has a similar code used to program the transmitter to its frequency, however that code does occur as an audible signal.
it would seem possible that radio stations have their info superimposed over their transmitted audio feed which is how it would display a particular station's info only when you are tuned to that station. I will be holding off on my ipod adapter purchase now until the dust settles on this one! As mentioned earlier, my MY05 doesnt display id3 tags when playing itunes prepared mp3 cds, one feature sorely missing imho. If this is as flexible a solution as it sounds, im certainly sold.

All,

There is alot of talk going on back and fourth on whether the ICE LINK Plus will display song info and the answer is it will NOT right now but after the firmware update it WILL. I have spoken to the engineers and it has alredy been tested. Just be patient,

Bob

Sounds like the upgrade is iPod specific. I would not be surprised then to see the official apple/mini solution to use exactly the same “software” than the dension one.

I have not seen a company specific ipod update that does not come from apple.

I would like to restate a question stated by PigNewton above:

WHERE do installs of this type of equipment best take place?

I have the Ice link on order and if I can get it into my car as soon as I get it I'd be happy to share my experience…

Guys (and gals),

I had a chance to test this out in my 540i last night and all I can say is WOW! This is the old ice>Link on steriods.

Big features:

Navigation of playlists via steering wheel control.

FULL control over charging capabilities [ON/OFF/2 hour charge]

Playlists 1-5 on your factory head unit for easy access

Dual operation mode, if you are comfortable with the classic iPod interface, you can reboot to standard ice>Link mode with the press of a button.

Any questions can be directed via email or phone:

Sounds sweet, Tom!

Hmmm, I may have to go with the ugly (IMO) multifunction steering wheel after all.

Though $250 for that, $200 for the ice>Link, $550 for the H/K upgrade…time to sell a kidney.

Is the Mini boost stereo considered a “Multi-Function Display”.?

Funny, I said the same thing when I opted for DSP on my 540! ;)

Multi-Function Display will be with the Boost or Wave radios.

Tom – thanks for coming on here and clearing all of this up. Looks like you might have a huge hit on your hands :)

Indeed he does, Gabe. 🙂 I just hope that MotoringFile gets the credit it deserves for bringing so many potential customers and vendors together. :)

Tom,

When you said this: “We have a planned firmware update that will be released shortly thereafter for the ID3v2 Text support on the BMW and Mini displays, this will support both the Multi-Functional Displays and Navigation units. “

Does that mean display on Nav unit? Like this?

http://membres.lycos.fr/mimi74/bebox4.jpg

Paul

When they say “it's easy to hook up to the existing CD changer jack in the back of a Mini”, does that mean that all Minis have the hook up jack already in them? Is it as simple as plugging the IL jack into that and then running the cable up to the IL unit? I sure would like to buy one but I want to be able to put it in myself. If anyone knows I'd sure love to know.

Hi all,

Sounds like a great product, in terms of quality and functionality. I bought the MINI factory iPod adaptor for the following reasons:

In my opinion, any device that motivates a glance away from the road is a reduction in attention and therefore safety. In-car DVDs (front seat), cel phones (hands-free, wireless or not) and navigating iPod playlists falls into this category. BMW/MINI specifically excluded this feature from their iPod adaptor very likely because of potential liability of driver distraction.

To those of you whose cars include many or all of the above devices: please use them with caution. Our number-one job is driving attentively.

Boy… that last post by RHT3 sounds like a BMW rep trying to stand up for a product with obviously less then stellar features compared to this one…

but thats my opinion…

Or by a driver (like me!) tired of dodging all the maniacs on the road that make their steering wheel their second or third priority… :(

Does anyone know how this installs in a 2004 X3? I think the Dension website says it hooks into the CD changer connector in the rear of the vehicle, but I seem to remember my dealer saying that the CD changer, if I had gotten it, would have been installed in the center console (under the armrest). Does anyone know which it is?

Paul,

the ID3v2 text will be very similiar to that when released.

RHT3,

I fail to see where the validity lies in your argument about the BMW kit, but you bring up a very good point.

With the ice>Link Plus, there is a message on the iPod's screen that says specifically “Do not browse the iPod when driving”

I recall the BMW kit in just saying “do not disconnect” and showing a roundel – hardly a safety message in my opinion.

Rich,

Your CD Changer wiring is in your center console of the X3 (only the x3 and z4 have these different locations rather than in the trunk).

Feel free to email me at tom@densionusa.com and I can email complete pictures of the install.

according to a very well respected audio shop in new york that i visited this morning, this icelink plus is being recalled and delayed until january! not sure if they are right, but i was told early units had lots of problems and they were going to tweak for a while more before releasing them again. also, no icelink will work with nav voice… bummer! i do know for a fact though that the bmw ipod adpater WILL preserve the nav voice – and am having one installed at prestige mini next week. i'll let you all know how it comes out.

cheers – drew

Drew,

I would like to know your source, because no one has the ice>Link Plus as yet. We're not even shipping until Dec 2nd.

Our ice>Link kits are fully compatible with Navigation, or Multifunctional Display radios, BMW Sirius and/or Bluetooth. We ask all of the needed questions at time of ordering and bench test each kit before shipping to verify functionability.

We also have a close relationship with a wide array of BMW/Mini dealers who provide us with support if needed, not to mention we are BMW enthusiasts ourselves. At some dealers, the ice>Link is an option in new vehicles!

Please reveal your “source”, I would love to speak to him/her personally and inform that the NAV voice or any other feature is disabled (other than the CD Changer) with the addition of the ice>Link Plus.

Correction:

“I would love to speak to him/her personally and inform that the NAV voice or any other feature is NOT disabled (other than the CD Changer) with the addition of the ice>Link Plus.”

gladly! it was andy at audio deign systems in new york on 10th avenue. i was HOPING he was wrong, but all i could go by at the time was his advice. i did after all drive over there to buy one! ;-)

i am psyched to hear that nav is unaffected by the icelink and that indeed everything is on track. again – i was only reporting back what i was told!

thanks – drew

Drew,

Thanks for the quick response. Sorry to come off as harsh, but we have had a few competitors posing as forum users trying to badmouth the product even before it ships ;).

Not to worry though, the ice>Link is FULLY compatible with the Mini. I personally guarantee it.

The information you received is completely incorrect from Audio Design; I will contact Andy to update him on the details in a courteous manner.

ok – here's the final wrap-up: after speaking with tom at dension i found out that YES the new ice link plus will work with nav and YES audio design systems in new york can (and will) be installing it. i have in fact cancelled my order for the bmw adapter and will now have audio designs install a new ice link plus next week. sorry for all of the confusion – i'm just a consumer out here after all! ; )

really looking forward to reviewing it for you all next week – cheers – drew

Hi, all.

Can anyone recommend an installer in the Orange County, CA area? The IceLink/Plus seems to be the perfect solution for my 04 Accord with NAV, but I want an installer with a clue. (Previous versions required the installer to make a special cable. Instructions are on the Dension web site, but I would rather not be the first person my installer tried it on.)

Scott

Scott,

Al and Ed's Autosound (www.alandeds.com) is also an authorized reseller of Dension's ice>Link. They have over 50 stores in the SoCal area to choose from.

Tom Guagliardo

Tom,

Similarly can you recommend an installer in the SF Bay Area? Preferably south bay (Palo Alto, Mountain View, San Jose, …). Thanks!

Hey Tom,

Do you or anyone know of an
installer in the Sacramento area?

I do not have an authorized retailer/installer in the SF or Sac areas, but the install is simple enough for any qualified 12V Automotive installer.

Install time is less than 60 minutes in the Mini.

Tom,

How about an installer in the Houston area please?

Thanks!

mine is shipping tonight and will be in nyc tomorrow!

drew

Spanky,

No one I can recommend in the Houston Area – we have had BMW dealers in that area performthe install before.

Tom,

So when exactly will this firmware update be available? I really want to purchase this – but primarily for the text on the display. The information on the site is scare and not very helpful…is the installation easy?

And is it actually already shipping?

I spoke with Tom at Dension yesterday about the various discussion points here and he was very helpful. I subsequently place my order and received a FedEx Shipping Alert this morning that the IceLink/Plus shipped yesterday, the second. So unless there's a 3 pound brick in there the item's certainly 'shipping'.

i just received mine this morning and am having it installed at 1pm today!

Is the installation difficult?? If it is…how much will it cost to install?

Re: installation
I placed my order, yesterday. I was told by Curtis @ Dension that since I have the NAV system in my MINI that I needed the trunk (cd changer) hook up. He also said that it was super easy to install — it just plugs into where the cd changer would normally plug into. It comes w/ a 15 foot wire to bring up to the front for the iPod. I'll report back once it arrives, and I've had a chance to plug it in.

Ladies and gentlemen,

I have had the Dension Ice Link v1.1, purchased and installed since mid July. Although the first unit was defective the subsequent one was very impressive. I absolutely love it and my iPod! Talk about a better solution than a CD changer. I believe that Tom, who has been kind enough to post on this site, was the gentleman I bought it from. I had “Tweeter, Inc.” install the Ice Link for me and they did a great job. I was very specific about what I wanted, most specifically about the location of particular elements of the Ice Link components. Which are hidden under the cup holder in my BMW allowing me easy access to upgrade them if needed. The install cost $50.00. Having had the upgrade in mind, based on my exploratory conversations with Tom prior to purchase, I wanted easy access. Just a point of clarification (Tom, please correct me if I am mistaken); I believe Dension has an upgrade program for those of us who have earlier versions of the Ice Link. And a question: does anyone know what components would need to be changed to upgrade the Ice Link v1.1 to an Ice Link plus?

Regards,
V.

I also want to find out more information on upgrading my V1.1 to the PLUS version.

John,
it's incredibly easy to install it with the trunk-kit. all you have to do is hook it up, simple as that. i definitely prefer this over the back of the head unit way because you don't have to unscrew anything. i high recommend this method (even to those without dvd nav) because you can definitely do it yourself. with the 15 ft wire, it's more than long enough. actually it's kinda too long since our mini isn't that long. ;)

As I seem to be unable to find info about this on any of the websites I visited, I'm giving it a try here.
Question is, can I install the icelink plus on my BMW 5series e39 from 1999 with business radio, no DSP, but NAV and TV?
Shall I go for the trunk install or the head-unit install? Over here in Europe, they seem to sell only the head unit version.
Don't have an Ipod yet, but I will get one for sure if the icelink fits my car.

Regards,

B.

I just called denison, and they said that the 1.1 kit is unavailible.

Whats going on?

The 1.1 kit is different from the ICE>Link Plus.

The ICE>Link Plus Kit that MotoringFile will be testing should be here by the end of the week.

I have a 2005 Mini S and am considering the ICE Link Plus, but I have two questions:

Would I be able to put the iPod aout of the way and control everything entirely with the head unit and steering wheel?

AND

Is there some kind of pass through that would allow me to install an XM tuner, too?

Thanks

I just installed my Icelink Plus. It was a trunk install and it was very easy. The first 5 playlist are associated with the buttons on the Boost radio. You can name them anything you want. The 6th button gets you into Icelink's special menu where it allows you to set other things. Unlike the Mini's unit, you need to be able to see what is being displayed on the iPod's screen while you are doing this. Track information is displayed on the iPod's screen during play in the Mini. I guess the firmware upgrade will pass this infromation to the boost radio. It does sound great.

A couple of you have installed the trunk mount system in your Minis. You say it's easy. I got my IceLink today and the extention cable is a lot thicker than I expected. How did you run the cable up front? Any suggestions?

I left mine in the trunk and in the cubby area out of site. I did not deal with snaking the cord to the front. Actually, getting it to work is easy. Getting it to look nice is a bit tougher. Tom Gagliardo of Dension recommended the radio mount for the Mini, but when I opened my package, I found he sent the trunk mount instead.

Were can I get it installed in the Seattle area? On the 2005 Mini Cooper is it better to install in the boot at the cd changer cable or in the back of the radio? I have the Harmon Kardon. Is it hard to feed the return line to the IPod from the boot? Thanks I could use the help.

Sorry for the delay – we have been very busy with the new release of the ice>Link Plus.

ID3v2 firmware support is expected t obe ready by the end of December, this will be offered as a flash upgrade.

Simply load the file onto your iPod and the ice>Link will instantly recognize the firmware and flash itself.

If you can load songs onto an iPod, you can load the firmware update easily.

Volker,

We will have an upgrade program in effect this week on the 1.1/1.2-ice>Link Plus.

Please contact me directly for more details @ 562.595.5153 x115.

Badluck,

The ice>Link Plus will work independently of your NAV and TV modules, you will need the Trunk Mounted kit – not a problem.

You can essentially leave the iPod in the glovebox and control the iPod completely from the steering wheel – it will take a little time to learn the controls. There are a LOT of new features.

As for an XM tuner, your best bet is to use the ice>Link Plus Trunk Mounted kit and use the MINI-AUX kit for an aftermarket XM tuner. This will ensure everything will get along together.

Tom,

Do you know of a good installer in the Dallas/Fort Worth area to do an install of the ice-link plus to store the iPod in the glove compartment? My wife is getting me a plu for Christmas and wants to get it installed before then.

Thanks.

Steve

Steve,

I can't recommend anyone I've actually worked with in your area other than CarToyz or BMW directly.

You may want ot try Tweeter Car audio as well.

Tom, your emails are pseudo-bouncing. Saying it's being delayed for some reason.

Does the ice-link work with the iPod Photo?

Installed my Ice-Link Plus yesterday (took about 30mins) and it works great!! Can't wait for the firmware upgrade to allow songs titles, great work Tom and everyone else at Dension!

Nevermind…I had a typo in the address. I'm gonna order soon and I also hope the firmware is as good as it's supposed to be!

Jared,

emails are working great! My box is full of them.

Anyone know if 3g ipod on-the-go playlists work with the icelink plus or is it only playlists created in itunes?

thanks

Well, after 3 looooooooongg months of waiting, i finially get my MCSc tomorrow! YEAH!!!!
Now that I finally will have the car to go along with my ICElink plus, can anyone offer me advice on a self install to the radio jack? I have seen posts somewhere about being able to access the back of the radio by removing a piece near the toggle switches…I have smaller hands than you guys so I am hoping that will make things easier! Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

Can someone tell me how to make changes to the IceLink menu on the Mini Cooper Boost radio. The radio buttons < M > don't match the booklet illustrations.

Well, I've installed my ICElink plus. It worked great. I switched over the iPod control, though, so I could scan through my songs and select different song directly from the iPod. The next day, I plugged in my iPod and won't work. How do I get it to start working again, and will I have to do it each time I want to play specific songs/albums? Help.

I forgot to mention that I ran the cable from the trunk area underneath the rear seats and down the center to the front along the driver's side. Then, I lifted up the “cover” that's right behind the cup holders/lighter and put the Dension hook up thingy in there so it wouldn't show too much. The iPod connection comes out the other side, and is long enough to get to the passenger seat.

I was able to run the wire under the trim on the Passenger side, so that no wire is visible from inside the cockpit (about 1.5 inches is visible in the trunk) For details/pictures search for a thread entitled:

“Anyone order the IceLink plus yet?” on northamericanmotoring.com

I got my Ice Link Plus and had to send it back. It was not working properly. I'm still waiting for a reply as to what they are going to do about it. Anyone else have a problem? Mine had to be rebooted by unhooking the cable each time I took the iPod out of the cradle and then went to use it again . Then finally it just locked up.

My stopped working after 2 weeks. I can't get my '04 MINI boost radio to even recognize that there is even an iPod connected to it. i tried resetting, pulling fuses, new firmware, etc. It just doesn't work. I heard new fimware is supposed to be coming out.

Yeah. They just shipped mine…is there anybody that's not having a problem with it? You'd think they would not send any more until they fixed it. I was told a few days ago it was backordered and it would ship in January but it shipped yesterday.

It also doesn't look very good in terms of id3 display on the HU.

Hi Tom,

Do you know of a good installer in the DC Metro area (VA/MD) area to do an install of the ice-link plus for iPod (3g) on my 2004 BMW X3?

Also, can I directly buy IcelLink plus from any Car Audio dealers or Circuit City/BestBuy in this area or do I need to order this only thru Dension / Online websites?

Thanks!

Manish

Add my name to the list of people with IceLink Plus problems:

I got an RMA today, I've decided to give them a shot at providing me with a functional product.

My problems included:
– No control (steering wheel or otherwise) of Ipod
– No turn signals
– No headlights
– Alarm system that would automatically unlock a second after pressing “lock”
– Flashing internal (not external) hazard indicators even with the ignition off

Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere, or if you're patient wait until the IceLink people get their act together before you make a purchase.

Our Christmas present came one day early!

Just left CarToys in Issaquah, Washington with out Ipod and IceLink Plus installed! It works great! Glovebox install with the docking cable and radio head mount. Passenger can work the Ipod, glove box organizer makes a shelf for the Ipod, back of glovebox has an access cover that hides the wires. Works great in our 05 Cooper. Thanks Tom at Dension for all your help. Thanks CarToys for the $55 install. Only took one hour. Glad I had you do it.

I suspect the negative posts on this site are competitors or folks who didn't follow the directions. Ours works great! Lets a good audio shop do the install and have an Egg Nog late while you wait!

Merry Christmas to all from the Pacific Northwest.

No, I am not a competitor! Just a person. I bought the trunk mount, installed it by the book, it worked the first time, then didn't. I talked to Dension on the phone and they agreed for me to send it back.. that indeed it was not working properly. Maybe you got lucky or.. give it a few days. If you check out other messageboards you'll see a ton of angry people like myself. Good luck!

Yep. A MINI2 thread in the Interior & Ice forum details a lot.

I think someone there said they had a problem with a radio-plug version, but most do the boot install so I don't know.

I'm not sure if I will even put mine in when I get it…or wait until everything is sorted out.

We'll be posting an update to this soon.

i took delivery of my new 05 MCS ten days ago and had the dealer install the ice>link plus before i drove it off the lot. nothing but problems!

i upgraded to firmware version 2.03 and all hell broke loose (as well documented in the ice>link plus thread on mini2 referenced above).

i've already contacted american express to dispute the dension transaction. by my math, dension owes me ~$300 for the costs/damages i've incurred from using their product.

i'll be contacting them tomorrow to see how the item can be returned at their expense.

be safe!

I just install, by the book, and had all kinda problems. This was in a 2004 with the HK head unit. I have been reading and it seems like the standard head units are working fine. I am going to install it in my Mini with the standard head unit tomorrow. The other one was my wifes mini.

Everyone having problems, are you installing on the HK head unit or standard? Just trying to see if it is just the HK's having the problems…

trevin, did you have damage to the car?? Once I unplugged the ice link, everything seemed to go back to normal.

my install is using the BMW R40 connector on the hk. i don't believe the i>l+ has done any damage to the car, but i can't be certain. i'm considering taking the car in and having the dealer run a thorough diagnostic of the electrical system to be safe.

at this point, i'm reseating the head unit fuse every time i get in the car so my turn signals work.

i kept the 2.02 firmware update and i'm going to try and rollback since i need to take it back to the dealer to have it uninstalled. [i wish i knew as much about cars as i do about computers.]

dension should hope there's no damage to the car or they'll be buying it for me.

Mine was installed on the stock Boost radio of my 2003 Mini. My car seems to be fine after I unhooked everything. Won't hook it up again. I'm asking for my money back.

I am going to call dension today and see what they say.

I don't think I am going to get rid of it at this point. This seems like, when everything is fixed, a great solution. Also, I have heard nothing but great things about the ice link prior to the plus.

I too had a LOT of problems (desrcribed in this thread) with the IceLink Plus and my HK radio. I just installed the new Firmware from Dension's web site (2.03) and it looks like it's working fine now. If you don't hear from me anymore, it means this new Firmware solves all the problems I've had.

Basically, the IceLink Plus interface needs to be resetted because it didn't recognized the iPod anymore each time I use my keys to close the door.

Got a response from Dension today. Looks like they are going to refund my money. If they do I'll be happy. I wish the product would have worked but for now have I'll go another route.

Good luck to you all!

SUCCESS!

This maybe premature, but I have the ice links working in both Mini's. I will see how the rest of the week goes, but so far so good.

I was installing the second on today on the standard headunit and check to make sure I did not miss anything from the first install. The first thing in the instructions is to disconnect the battery. Well, of course all instructions say that and like usual I ignore it. Well, this seems to be the most inportant step in the process. It is like rebooting.

I did not disconnect, I just pulled the 2 fuses for the radio. Waited a few minutes, connected the ice link, and put the fuses back in. The radio display shows disabled. So I turned the ignition off, disconnected the ice link, turned the ignition on, and then plugged the ice link back in. I had already loaded the firmware upgrade on this ice link, so I was good to go.

Then I decided to go back and reinstall the ice link in the mini with the HK headunit. Did the samething as above, but then installed the new firmware. Everything was ok. The unit is working great, minus the text display. And the car is working great!

So it seems the key is the battery disconnect, and the new firmware. I had been speaking with Tom at dension, so I called him to give him the good news. He said that even the professional installers are ignoring the battery disconnect.

I will run it for the rest of the week and post back the final out come.

Hmmm… all these stories are filling me with great confidence! not. I'm getting my ice link plus fitted thursday. I'm dreading it now. Where's that tom when you need him? Any word on the firmware update to support ID3v2?

I don't know how many of you saw this on the Dension website…but:

(We are currently working on ice>Link: Plus firmware updates. Please check back frequently, as the update is expected to be released shortly. The update will fix current issues applying to BMW vehicles. The current FW 2.03 is not to be used with BMW vehicles.)

I guess we are NOT crazy!

I thought I had it with 2.03, but the next morning, it started. By the end of the day it was system shut down!

Then I read the about the 2.02, and I loaded that today. Again, I hate to say it, but so far so good. I will see what happens over the next few days.

As promised my feedback : DO NOT INSTALL FIRMWARE 2.03 (as advertise on Dension's website). I did so (before I read the warning) and all my electrical circuit on my Mini Cooper S went down. I switched back to IceLink v 1.0 (hte first one) and will probably stay with it for a long time.

Well I had mine professionally installed today and I have to say it's great! I've decided just to stick with the firmware v2.01 instead of updating to any others and the ipod has been in and out of the car all day with absolutely no problems. So far so good! Very, very happy with it. Works a treat!!!!

massive problems- Despite the problems here, I decided to try to install my ice link plus. I did not disconnect the battery. It installed ok, seemed to work. I put the downtubes back etc, and tried again- it didn't work anymore, AND sound was only from the left channel. Disconnected, reconnected, seemed to work again (still only from the left though). Went out last night, then drove home. Tried “ipod mode” then couldn't get out of it. It was too late and I went to bed- went out this AM- dash lights were still on, and the stereo is ALL screwed up. Only sources are indash cd, radio, aux. None have ANY sound. MFSW not working AT ALL. And worst of all- my doors won't stay locked. And unfortunately I'm at work for 24h, and can't play with it today, so my car is out in the parking lot unlocked, and I can't get answers from dension til at least tomorrow. not good. oh and in case you're wondering- I am using 2.01. Any help MUCH appreciated, and direct email would be a huge help. Thanks!!!

Start with disconnecting the battery. Get the 2.02 firmware from densions site. As soon as you get connected do the firmware upgrade. DO NOT use 2.03!! There is instructions about upgrading the firmware.

I spoke with Tom @ dension the other day. He said to use this firmware and then there are 2 options at this time. You can 1. leave the ipod connected at all times and you can use the ice link plus functions (playlist on the preset buttons…) or 2. you have to switch it to classic mode (just the link to the radio, you use the ipod controls). This would allow you to disconnect the ipod and take it out of the car. These are temp fixes until they release the updated firmware. Also, you should do the connecting and disconnecting when the car is off.

Does anybody leave their iPod's connected all the time? If you do, do you live in areas that get really hot or really cold? I'm just wondering what leaving it in the elements would do.

I was leaving it in the car all the time (at least until I needed a charge) with the aux input, but once it started getting cold I noticed the display didn't look as good, and the battery died a lot faster, so I brought it in.

The new firmware (2.04) for the icelink plus has been released which fixes issues with it being used with bmw / mini…

http://install.dension.com/updateil2.html

2.04 isn't on the densionusa.com site yet…

Does this version allow hot-swapping of the iPod yet? Or do we still have to shut down the car before removing it?

And what about the IDv3 tag data on the headunit display?

Someone already tried the 2.04 Firmware ?

I am still waiting to receive my unit returned from RMA so I have not personally tried it, but from what I have read on the dension forums it looks like the hot swapping issue is fixed but I can not say for sure. IDv3 tags are not implemented yet…

I just upgrade to Firware 2.04 and everything seems to work as expected. But I've had surprises with the latest firmware upgrade a few days/jours after installation. So I'll post some comments tomorrow after a full day of use.

If you don't hear from me anymore, that's probably because my car has burned ;-)

I loaded 2.04 last night, no problems so far, course I didn't really have any problems with 2.01. Just waiting for the IDv3 tag implmentaition now.

Firmware 2.04 works on my 2004 MCS with HK. No trouble so far after 24 hours of use. I'm happy after all the troubles I've had with previous Firmware.

I purchased an IceLink Plus today at the Macworld show, but I cannot seem to find a decent installation guide. It is different from the v 1.1, so I am wondering if there is a specific guide for the new version. The guide that came with the Dension is a total waste, as the pictures are unclear and the text makes very little sense. Anybody know? Thanks…

Douglas, I just received my IceLink Plus that I ordered about 3 weeks ago. Given some of the horror stories that have appeared on various forums I am a tad bit nervous about the upcoming installation process. I did, however, find some pretty nifty step by step instructions at newministuff.com. The link is below. This sure looks a whole lot better than Dension's spotty set of instructions. Good luck with your installation.
http://www.newministuff.com/icelinkplusdiy.htm

Does the 2.04 firmware update provide the IDv3 tag info on the HK head unit yet? Or is that coming in another update?

Hey guys, how are you getting the firmware? I can't find a link to it on the Dension website.

I got my hardware yesterday, but no software / firmware for the iPod???

I hooked everything up, but it doesn't seem to work without the software installed on the iPod.

Any sage advice?

Scott, try http://install.dension.com. You would think that you would find it under “Downloads” at densionusa.com but nooooooooo. Between their lousy printed directions and their user less-than-friendly website they really make an install an exercise in pain and frustration.

Scott;

It should work without having to install anything additional. The firmware updates simply add features and/or remove bugs, but my Ice-Link Plus which I hooked up over the weekend worked “out of the box”. I just had to plug in the wires and away I went.

-Jeff

The 'firmware' isn't for the iPod — the iPod is just used as a storage device to transfer it to the Ice-link+

The only thing you should 'need' to do is (a) make sure your iPod has the latest firmware from Apple, and (b) play the interface-config file on your iPod to configure the ice-link+

Guys,

Thanks for all the comments. I got the interface-config file and installed as instructed.

I'm getting no connectivity with the iPod. Jeff notes that I should just be able to plug in the wires and away I go, but it don't happen. The iPod doesn't seem to acknowledge the ice>Link nor vice-versa.

Guess it's time to wait for Dension tech support to open and sit tight.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions.

i have installed the 2.04 and it is causing problems, mostly on the mini with the HK in it(back to the turn signals not working…). The other mini with the standard headunit, works ok, but then does strange things. eg. Driving listening to the ipod and the screen comes up with the please turn off and back on the ignition. Then Went away.

Just wondering…has anyone gotten their refund back yet? I haven't, and I sent my unit back at the end of Dec. haven't heard a thing yet!!!! They told me I'd get a full refund. I emailed them but no response as of this morning.

I have a 2004 Accord. I don’t have XM radio so I was able to utilize my AUX port. When I plug in my iPOD into the cradle for the icelink it goes straight to “OK to Disconnect.” I know my headunit doesnt support ID tags. I just want to play my ipod using it’s controls while using my car’s speakers! What’s wrong with my installation???

Ok nothing was wrong with my installation. Long behold my Ipod was still version 2.1. I updated to 2.2 and now everything is working!! Man this is the shiznit!

This morning, I installed the latest update 2.05 (from http://install.dension.com/updateil2.html).

I have a 2005 mini-S convertible with H-K stereo. So far, it’s fixed all my problems, in particular with the “hot swap.” I’ve been able to turn the car on/off without my Ipod hooked up, and no problems (so far!) with turn signals and other electricals.

Just ordered my iceLink Plus! I am SO excited. I have a 2003 Honda Accord with factory navigation. Does the IceLink Pluse include a solution to the splicing of wires that was necessary with the first iceLink? If not, does anybody know of an installer in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area who has done this install?

Thanks!

Dave

Hi,

I drive a 3 serie E46 BMW with 16:9 Nav system. Could anyone tell me if the Ice link plus is already available in Europe and if it supports BMW E46? Does the ID3 Text display works properly (and reliable)on this car? What about all the horror stories I read here before. Is that more or less sorted out?
I hope someone can help me out.

Thank you very much.

I have a ipod mini for 6 months and just recently i drop it by mistake. It was nothing serious but now when i turn my ipod the apple sign shows up then a sad face appears.Does anyone know that means?
Hi im from Mexico i have a Renault Megane II 2005, the dension ice link plus is compatible with the factory made stereo of my car Thx for the reply
Now that Dension USA is no longer selling, servicing or supporting Dension Audio Systems products (including the Ice>Link Plus) which alternative product we can use to connect the ipod to our Minis with H/K?
