We’ve got another scoop for you today and it involves a topic everyone has an opinion on; colors. As expected, among the many things that BMW will be altering for the debut of the next generation MINI will be the exterior color palatte. More specifically MotoringFile has learned that MINI intends to introduce a total of seven new colors for the 2007 model year. New blues, a new yellow and a new red top the list.
Names like Laser Blue, Mellow Yellow, and Lightning Blue have been mentioned but at this point nothing is completely confirmed. However we have been told to expect a total of 12 colors to be available across the range.
Add to this the fact that Black Eye Purple (Purple Haze in the US), Liquid Yellow and Solar Red will be discontinued from April production onward and you’ve got the chance for some serious change in the MINI color selection.
In fact so much change, the inevitable question is, what stays? Out of the five that appear to be staying, we’ve only been able to confirm one specifically: Chili Red.

I really think metalic has gotten quiet boring.
I would like every dealer to have a pantone chart much like the one pictured above, and for $500 more, every customer would have a true pick of colors for their MINI.
Personally I’m holding out hope for a <a href="http://automobilemag.com/reviews/coupes/0512_bmw_z4_coupe_08_900.jpg" rel="nofollow">matte finish</a> of some kind.
Matte finish would be awesome. 8 or so years ago I saw a new Corvette that was painted with a matte black finish and it seriously looked like a batmobile.
Matte black mini with gloss black strips (trimmed in white) would be the ticket for me.
I like that finish a LOT. Bring it!
I remember in 2001 the MINI website showed 16 colors “available”. Of course it didn’t happen, and my Iceberg MINI was not to be.
I still love my Indi Blue the best though.
Don’t be fooled, and I’m not saying this is the case in the Zcoupe photography…
But many times the director of photography orders the car to be dulled down. Using Krylon Dulling Spray or something similar, offers a temporary solution to an overly glossy surface. This happens in film, tv, and advertising photography.
So don’t get your hopes up too high…
I personaly love a matte finish except for ONE thing.
Fingerprints stand out moreso than any speck of dirt. Oil on your fingertips “gloss” the finish…

Doug – I was also a little skeptical of the paint and how it was photographed but that is truly matte paint that BMW is considering for production. In fact everyone I know who has seen it in person can’t believe how incredible it looks. Here’s a bit more on it from Automobile:

I’m content with the BRG they have now, and a lighter, non-metallic green would be a nice addition. Hope the yellow is like Ferrari’s Fly Yellow – that would be cool.

I hope MINI does not follow BMW color range and offer those boring metallic silvers, beiges and the like. BMW seem to want to be bland for the buying masses who do not want bold colors like red, white, yellow.
MINI is a fun brand, so make them in fun colors – red, blue, yellow, as well as having the option of traditional BRG, Old English White, black etc. The metallics could be left for special option orders.
How about colors like “Home on the orange”, “Am eye blue”, “not quite White”, “Limey green”, “olive a twist”???

We were looking at the Lotus Exige at the LA Auto Show… Not a whole lot of surface to color up… but the paint was HORRIBLE!
For a car that is equal to a down payment on a small home, one would expect a better finish.
A couple cars down was a Saleen Mustang… Paint was near perfect.
I know Environmental standards are differant in Europe than here, but the quality should not suffer due to that.

I originally wanted the BRG for my new MCS but the current green is way too dark for me. Looks almost black in some lights. A lighter (and to me me, truer) non-metalic BRG with a white roof would have been the perfect color combination for me. Ended up getting the Chili Pepper Red with a White roof.
I hope chrome is one of the colors!! IF that is a color. 😛
I’m surprised at so much emotion about BRG. I’ve got one with the white roof and like it a lot though I admit it isn’t exactly classic.
Gabe – Maybe you’ve put this somewhere and I’ve missed it but is there a percentage breakdown of what colors MINIs have been painted since introduction of the new MINI?
In other news from Guatemala…although they still aren’t importing MINIs here, there is a raffle on for later this month for charity.
Two new MCSs are being raffled. Raffle tickets are Q/1,000.00 and there are only 2,000 tickets so you have a one in a thousand chance. Includes tax and plates which adds about 25% to 30% to the value. [The exchange rate is about one dollar to 7.5 Quetzales.]

I agree Gabe. The Z4 Coupe is a masterpiece. I too have not heard one bad thing from anyone, until now of course.
One more vote for a REAL BRG. . . I’m both sad and happy about Purple Haze going away. Sad because it is a really fantastic color and happy because we have what will be one of the rarest combos made: PH/Silver Roof. . .
I still think that MINI should do a deal with Crayola and let us mix and match body and roof colors from the 64 box of crayons

I must be living in some parallel universe if I’m the only one to dissent, because the Z4 is fugly, but the the Z4 Coupe takes fugly and beats it in the face with a tire iron until it’s unrecognizable (and here I thought the Z3 coupe was rock bottom…). The angles, sweet heaven have mercy, the angles! The Aztek had less jarring lines than this thing!
Bangle should just change his name to a graphic of the Z4 Coupe and call himself “The Designer Formerly Known As Bangle.” It’s the car that brings all his evil, nasty work to the pinnacle of imperfection.

So, why get rid of Liquid Yellow for a bunch of lame gray colors only to bring back a yellow in 07? Not that I have something against it mind you.
Also, how will the matte paint age? I can’t see how you could wax that.
Just a little clarification (and way OT) – Chris Bangle doesn’t design cars. More specifically the Z4 design was lead by Van Hooydonk – one of the most acclaimed automotive designers of the last 15 years according to Robert Cumberland from Automobile Magazine.

I still think the Z4 is a pretty weak design IMO. Looks much better with a hardtop but the car suffers from some overdone and very inconsistent lines in the front and sides.
I’ll take the Z3 any day of the week. May be even perhaps the 1950’s BMW 507. Now that was a REAL car….
My bad on Bangle – I guess I’ve just made him my scapegoat for anything I don’t like in a BMW (much as GM is my scapegoat for anything I don’t like about automobiles in general). I assume it’s still Bangle’s signature on the sign-off sheet…

Back to MINI colors, one nice thing about a matte finish: it would put the eternal “Zaino vs. Klasse vs. Zymol vs. Etc.” to rest once and for all.

I would think racing green and hyper blue have to stay. I guess we’ll see. I just hope they’re good colors and not more flavors of grey, grey blue, and dark grey blue.

I had to comment on the Z4 coupe thing…this reminds me of and could be very similar shape to the old Triumph GT6 (the six-cylinder hard top coupe) which was a coupe version of the Spitfire convertible. Now with BMW’s interest in Triumph the fog is starting to lift. Is the Z$ coupe a reincarnation?
I am so excited that they are bringing back some sort of yellow. I got a chili red cenvertible but yellow was my second favorite color. Hopefully the new yellow will look good & hand around for a few years so I can buy a friend for my chili red in a few years.
Wow , went from colour to Z4 and CB. I thought CB was banned from MF forever. Plus the whole CB thing is so yesterday it ain’t funny. Plus it would be nice if all the CB haters would get their facts straight about what he did and did not design, geez.
One person here thought the new Impala was a nice design but feels the Z4 is week….Well it takes all types to make the world turn now don’t it.
Now don’t be bashing the Z3 coupe and the Z4 coupe! As the owner of a M coupe and a MCS I guess my tastes are broad, but I was really impressed when I saw the first real photos of the Z4 coupe. I had hoped to hate it, but was quite taken by it.

yes, the 507 is a hot car. Check the Z8 – based on the 507 and it kicks the Z3 and Z4 up and down the street.
I like news of the 7 new colors..in addition to liking the z4 (a car that is truly worthy of lusting).

Actually, the call for a “true” British Racing Green… I dunno… What’s “true” about any BRG? There’s no “right” shade, and various car makers have been offering metallic colors named British Racing Green for years now. The classic Mini has been sold from the early nineties right until the end of production, painted in a color which was called British Racing Green and was… metallic.
I can understand people would prefer a non-metallic dark green, because it looks very classic. But calling it “true”… I would prefer to call it “classic”.
Z4 – FUGLY!!! Can’t stand it (you are not alone). As for colours – how about a battleship grey, would look awesome with chrome alloys and tints 🙂 Rich
“True BRG” is always a non-metalic color. More recent variations are just ways for manufacturers to spice things up a bit and modernize it. When in doubt, look to Jaguar and Range Rover’s BRG to see what the classic BRG should look like…a deep green with a little more blue in it than traditional forest green, and of course, non-metalic!

There is no “true” BRG, unfortunately. I wish I had a link to the article, but one history of the colour I read did a good job of dispelling the myth that to describe dark, solid, deep green as the only “true” BRG was incorrect. To do so ignores the fact that in the past 9 decades storied British marques like Napier, Aston Martin and many others used both metallics and even quite pale greens in their livery.
British Racing Green as a specification simply does not exist.
However, I think most people would agree that it shouldnt be a metalic paint.
It would be interesting to see a Mini with a custom BRG non metalic respray. See if all this is actually worth worrying about. The colour just simply might not work on a Mini.

It might not work on a MINI, but it definitely worked on Minis. A classic 60’s Mini color was BRG with a light yellow roof.
Well I Don’t understand this obsession with BRG.
In the UK BRG is the second least popular colour accounting for about 3% of MINIs, the only thing less popular is Liquid Yellow which is about 1%!
I’d be fine if they just scrapped the entire palette and started over for 2007.
Back to what the topic at hand was. I really hope that they get some brighter colours this go around. The MINI is such a fun and vibrant car but their colour choices have become anything but fun and vibrant. I think it would be awesome to have some true to hur colours like the CR. A kelly green would look awesomly fun…and brighter yellow would be really nice as well.
A Lotus BRG nonmetallic with a pale yellow roof would be awesome! As far as BRG not being a “specific” color, that is true, but I know it when I see it, and I haven’t seen it on a MINI yet.
PS The Z4 in all its incarnations hurts my eyes…as does the 7 and 5…..sorry, just the way it is in my world.

Not hearing anyone saying this, but one of my favorite colors is Pepper White… I dislike intensely the appliance, bright whites of so many cars… including Alpina white… not for a MINI, so sir.
I know most on this group like the colors and not grey but I have to say this. I wasn’t sure if I’d like Royal Grey Metallic. My wife ordered it on her 06 MC and I absolultly love it. It looks great! It is a smokie color rather then just grey as there are some hints of coper or brown in the sunlight. I got some smoked side lights for it and it looks awesome.
Personally, I’d like to see a non-metallic sky blue be offered with white roof and mirror caps. That would be sweet.

Maybe this will help dispell some of the controversy about <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_racing_green" rel="nofollow">British Racing Green</a>.
In a letter from MINI we were told BRG’s color code will be changed after April and Solar Red will dissappear. That means there will be a new BRG but who knows what it’ll look like at this point.

Although I have Indi Blue and love it, the Velvet Red was classy looking and now is very rare. Maybe they should introduce a candy apple red, or a hot pink, or a magenta. Hmmm….

I thought I felt the same, and my classic Mini very nearly became Old English White (which has the same yellowish hue to it as Peper White does). And then I thought, wait a second, this white is too yellow. Instead, I opted for the color White Diamond, which had been on my classic’s roof before the respray (along with a… BRG metallic body 😉 ) Have a look here for the result:

It’s also a white with a tad yellow in it, just a whole lot less than your typical OEW and PW.
I still love this combination, and I would love for the Mini2 to be also available in a lighter, brighter white (although PW is also quite nice – my Mini2 very nearly would have been PW/B and I still think it’s one of the best combo’s – just would be better with less yellow mixed in with the white 🙂 ).
I’d love it if they keep Royal Grey around. That colour is simply breathtaking. And also bring back black 🙂

Old Mk 1 and Mk2 Mini Cooper never offered BRG as an option – it was Almond Green – a mid-green colour. BRG was used by John Cooper works cars.
BRG is named from the old F1 days where cars raced in colors of their countries – i.e. British (green) – Cooper, Lotus, etc.
The cars changed color when sponsors were introduced in corporate livery.
Old Mk1 Coopers never had roof colors other than the Old English White ( a creamy yellow rather than white)) and Black.

Cool survey… but MINI isn’t really worried about what is popular now but more what will be popular in 2-4 years.

I wish I could believe that Mini/BMW really did care about what would be popular in 2-4 years, but recent changes to the color line suggest inspiration is coming from the Audi/Mercedes catalog circa 1992. I fully expect the final 12 to include:
Somnolent Silver
Conformist Charcoal
Cliche Grey
Teutonic Titanium
Depressing Dusk
Play it Again Pewter
Boring Black
And at least two other options splitting greyscale hairs. All metallic, of course, so that we can pay extra despite the fact there is actually very little extra cost required to produce a metallic paint and despite much interest in non-metallic options.
Much as I love Mini, I think it’s silly to suggest there’s any leading-edge thinking in evidence here. And I’d also like to see Gabe or someone in a semi-official capacity have the guts to call out the upcharge for what it is – a nasty practice pioneered some time ago by the German manufacturers as a way to make their offerings seem less expensive than they are. Just raise the damned base price and be done with it, don’t insult me.
VW does a more creative job managing color, and frankly mainstream producers like Ford and Nissan do as well, at least on their more youthful offerings. I’d gladly take the Mustang color chart from any one of the past five years over the current Mini offering, not even taking into account that Ford manages without any color-related extortion. I guess we Mini fans should be grateful for Chili Red and whatever Blue and Yellow options manage to sneak onto the offer sheets for a couple of months.

CR will stay … for now. MINI will most likely change to metallic colors (including surcharge!) only, as more car manufacturers do.
I like the Liquid(ated) Yellow, but I would like a stronger – brighter color yellow (more like SEAT / AUDI or some Italian sportscars). Mellow Yellow does not sound like this. It sounds daft and boring.
@BMW — the MINI is a remarkable car and should have a remarkable colorscheme. If you are after the BMW customers, then please consider 2 color schemes. A daft scheme for those who are just looking for a small BMW like car, and a spectacular bright scheme for those who like MINI!
And please, please, please do not forget where MINI comes from. Don’t throw aware the heritage … save the one true color for a MINI: BRG!

I know this is more of a ‘color wishlist’ than a discussion on paint finishes, but I have a ’67 Mustang that I’m trying to paint it matte black with gloss black stripes, but I have had a hell of a time trying to find any place that does matte (or even satin) finishes. This is the closest place I’ve found on the web, and I was wondering if any of you guys have had success in finding a place that’ll do it or a auto paint company that mixes matte paint.

Yes, the MiNi is a FUN car. Yes, most colors are rather un-FUN… and, they get rid of the sweet colors. Electric Blue is what I have & is still my favorite… it no longer exists! They do have too many shades of grey & (dull) blue. The orange sounded like a nice idea, but it’s too dark… the Nissan Murano has the best shade of accessible orange. Lotus Elise HAS the best Orange though. MINI shoul get BRiGHT!!! Come out with “Sun-Kissed Orange” (a bright metallic orange, like the Lotus Elise), “Sunburst Yellow” (a fine bright metallic yellow like the old Mazda RX-7 had ~15yrs back), “Plum Crazy Purple” (a bright purple with large metallic flakes) & “Gremlin” or “Lime Green” (a bright metallic/nonmetallic bright green). No more BORING colors. Thank you!

For me the OEW MC with the Checkmate interior would be sweet.

Just came back to this because it was linked from another thread. I’d actually be curious to learn what you think would distinguish an OEW from Pepper White. That is in fact a lot like classic OEW’s, i.e. white with a lot of yellow mixed in. Put even more yellow in PW, and you’d get too close to Liquid Yellow 🙂
Actually, I think PW is Mini’s “trendy” name for Old English White. They could have called it OEW, but that wouldn’t really match up with Mini’s trendy image 🙂
We bought 3 Mini “Launch” editions when they came out in Canada in 2002.
Chili Red, Indi Blue and Light silver with a Black roof.
The one that stands out the most in the rainstorm,is the Chile Red. How can anyone look at that color and not smile?
It just says fun, intrique and playful.
Hope Mini improves the sound deadening and also improves the tire quality,because all of ours have had terrible tread noise by 25,000 k’s.
Ended up replacing the run flats,with Goodrich tires that are much, much quieter and a hell of a lot cheaper.
My Indi Blue was the first one in our city in April 2002. Felt like I was driving a huge bill board that said Look At Me!.
The attention the car got was life altering, and I called it my CHICK magnet.
Still love it to bits and will be very hard to part with down the road….but a Turbo might just be the right combo to make me think about it.
Hate the whine of the Supercharger.
Had 2 Saabs with Turbos and loved the rush.
Can’t wait to see what Mini comes up with for 2007!

Instead of bringing out more colours, how about giving more options.
Its madness that you can only pick different colour roofs on coopers and coooper s’. And why only black or white. Why not silver, or any other colour within the palette.
REAL BRG is nothing like BMW’s interpretation. And it certainly doesn’t deserve to be metallicized to add insult to injury. REAL BRG would have been something.

The roofs come in white/black/silver/body color (11?)
that’s about 15 different colors for the roof.
At least in the U.S. YMMV in other countries.

We got our MINI S (convertible) in a brilliant purple with white stripes and orange/blue cloth seats. If I may say so, it looks fantastic! We think it jazzes up the Boston landscape pretty well. And it sure is unique…
Of course, your tastes may vary. But why do we Americans always seem to settle for shades of black, gray, white, and – oooh – red? When the great looking MINI is decked out, it looks just as striking as can be (without the same old spoilers or other stuff that wants to be cool and nonconformist, and just isn’t).
It’s a fun and playful car. Why can’t we let the colors reflect that?
I really like the Z4 in any bright color. It shows up in my MINI’s rearview mirrors better when I fly by some geezer draggin arse.
