Our old friend Paul from MINI2 was one of the lucky European journalists invited to drive the JCW GP yesterday at a BMW sponsored track event. Paul gives us the full download on how it is on the track as well as everyday driving. A great review for both those who have the GP on order and for those who are just curious.
[ MINI2 Drives the GP ] MINI2
When is MotoringFile going to get to drive the GP you ask? Unfortunately my week long review won’t be happening until this fall, a month or two after the first GPs are delivered. Until then expect MotoringFile reviews from Todd (of Whiteroofradio) and perhaps a short one from yours truly at Monterey with the rest of the U.S. journos. Until then I’ll have to make due with a week long 2006 MCS JCW review starting next Friday. Tough going indeed.
Everytime I start to feel a little jealous of Todd, and this review certainly gives a fella a twinge or two, all I have to do is look at the picture of “Ol Thunder Blue” and I feel a lot better.
Damn it I wish I hadn’t bought that house and cancelled my GP order! Sigh…
Car is coming. Thanks Paul for picking “WORKS GP” That the plate I selected from CA DMV ! Can’t wait until Aug 17th @ Monterey
Brilliant – I am glad that he liked the car over the standard JCW because I had the fear that the modifications would not be noticable enough to justify the price!
If the improvements are this good as driven on a track, I’m really looking forward to a review of it driven on a good old twisty road or two….
Sounds like its going to be a great car.
AWESOME, well written review! It makes me want to go out and buy one right now.
Great review, but no mention of the limited edition number?
The review mentioned brake fade issues, I am convinced that if the front air ducts had been perforated instead of just of esthetic value, the brakes performance would have improved.
I wonder how many folks with this car will be tempted to perforate their ducts, which would not comply with US road safety regulations?
Nice review! ….. damn, I’m glad I cancelled that house and put a deposit on my JCW GP – which are my Connecticut plates! 🙂 Hope it will be Sept – Oct soon! HEY ! – wanna buy a nice 02 S?
The car sounds like lots of fun. I haven’t selected my plates yet— I did cheat though and found out what number GP i’ve been issued… Can you tell i’m the kid that shook all the presents under the tree?
See you in Monterrey!
How did you find out your number?
If your MA did it ask him how!

I did cheat though and found out what number GP i’ve been issued…

Matt,
How??? When??? Who’d you get the number from?
Jim
If wasn’t so darn ugly………….
Jim,
I asked my super secret inside contact, although she verified that a mailing had gone out to notify participants. I received that the next day so it wasn’t quite so exciting. I am number 0220 and I have to admit that I can live with the number but I really anticipated being a single digit guy. I pre-pre-pre-ordered my JCW last August when I first learned about it. No bitterness on my behalf, certainly long-term customers and mini owners got priority status. If you are reading this you probably got your number by now as well…
Cheers,
Matt
Yep, I received my number. GP0101.
I’m on my 3rd MINI, from the same dealer. So I guess I lucked out with a California-centric number.
You guys with the roof numbers – are you getting your cars in Monterey? I know someone who is picking up at Lime Rock and has not heard VIN # or roof #.
What’s up with that??
Picking up mine for Lime Rock. Just got my number in the mail today. GP 0080 is mine!!!!
Erik – Nice number ! Mine will be in the Sept-Oct batch. Maybe see you at Lime Rock – I will be there with my 02 Electric Blue, unless it sells first!
Way cool all you numerologists! Hey– my buddy that was going to join me in Monterrey has his Class reunion and reneged. If anyone knows of someone that is interested in attending, feel free to have them contact me. I only want to be compensated the $1,000 to attend all the events. No obligation to drive back with me. If anyone wants to drive back across the USA, or even a few legs of MTTS I am open to negotiation. I am going to attend Vegas, and somewhere around New Mexico make a run home to Boston. Just help out a little with Gas is all i’d really want, hotels would be on me. Thanks for the help gang. Email below:
Cheers,
Matt
