Both Renault and BMW have been working on technology to allow their cars to ‘talk’ to each other.

>The driver of a vehicle coming across an accident on a lonely country road presses a button which automatically transmits the GPS coordinates to rescue teams and other vehicles heading in the same direction as the accident.

>Minutes later other drivers can obtain the warning by digital radio.

So far, the system has worked between BMW and MINIs.

>Results of the tests conducted with the prototypes will be passed onto the Car to Car Communication Consortium of eight car makers and research partners working on standardising frequencies for a global car-to-car communication system.
