Yeah, be prepared, as the Boy Scouts say. When I traveled in the classic Minis, I had a small tool box, spares of various flavors, and a CB radio towards the end. I had to do that sandwich at least once, so it made me laugh remembering it! Carried a rubber hammer to tap the SU fuel pump, too, and somehow managed to avoid being towed anywhere all those years, except when I got pranged badly twice. My proudest achievement was making it from San Diego to Denver and back with no mishaps - in July!

We would've stayed for the Scavenger Hunt, as it was in our original plans - they're always fun!

The moral of your story seems to be:

Carry fix a flat, a plug kit, and a pair of pliers. But then that wouldn't have helped the shredded tire. I relished the breakdowns on our classic car roadtrips as long as they were repairable on the road or limp-along-able. Sometimes it was a coathanger to cinch up an exhaust, sometimes reconnecting a loose low-tension lead to the dizzy, or even sandwiching yourself between two others when you lost your lights and wipers in a late-night rainstorm. We even replaced a head gasket on the side of the road once.

Good to see MINIs are continuing the tradition and good folk like you are there to help.

I'll add also AMVIV was great and would recommend staying for the Scavenger Hunt on Sunday. It was a blast.

Great write-up, Rob. I can empathize with all the emotional feelings you had about AMVIV. This was my first AMVIV and my first time ever to Las Vegas. It was also the longest roadtrip I have ever taken in my life. I finally got my side window fixed (from the pellet gun incident on the strip), and count myself lucky to not be injured. It was a great adventure and if I get the chance (and wife-acceptance-factor), I'll do it again!

Sounds like quite an adventure Rob.
It was nice seeing you again, albeit just a simple hello. (Seeing as how I was at AMVIV for just sevearl hours.)
