I'm looking at this car for showroom stock series. The only modern amenities I would want is cupholders for my coffee (no starbucks yuk) as I'm driving to the track in the morning and a decent sound system. Stock seats would come out and a roll bar goes in. Sunroof only adds weight and a higher center of gravity. BMW needs to get this down to 2700lbs. Car looks good but could be sexier and more distinguished. WHERE IS THE "M" VERSION OR TRACK VERSION. BMW GIVE US WHAT WE WANT, A REAL SPORTS CAR!!!!!

If you're talking about reasons cars are the way they are then yes, look at society and it's "needs". Look at the average weight (especially of Americans) and the constant need for luxury and to feel coddled.

Thank God governments around the world are here to protect us from… ourselves.

Um, yes. While it's nice to say something like this, look at deaths per 100k miles driven. Or should we go back to the days of my 65 Mustang with a non-collabsable steering column and a steel dash?

But that said, the reason that cars now are pigs isn't becasue you can't make a good, crashworthy car light, it's because in the trade off of light vs convienience, the heavy parts win. Imagine the one series without power windows or seats. Drop tons of the elecltronic wiz bits and doo dads, and I bet you could find the 500 lb weight savings that would make this a screamer.

But then no one (well, very few) would buy it, as we SAY we want light, but for the most part, we really want some cup holders for our Starbucks and heated, electric seats!

A car like the 2002 can't be built nowadays on account of regulations.

Thank God governments around the world are here to protect us from... ourselves. Ever get the feeling that every car from here on out will become faster, quieter, safer and... less fun.

I really don't understand all the references to the 2002 . .. it's obvious that the 1-series is simply a smaller version of the 3-series devised because the 3-series has swelled each consecutive generation.

As a former 2002 owner I can't see anything in the 1-series that reminds me of the 2002. I wish the 1-series was the rebirth of the 2002, but the 2002 was quirky, practical, and had a wonderful greenhouse that amplified the driving experience. The 1-series looks like every modern car; a cave.

A car like the 2002 can't be built nowadays on account of regulations. Therefore kidding ourselves that the 1-series is a birth of the 2002 is an unattainable dream.

Ahhh . . . I guess I'm ranting

It seems BMW could solve a price and weight problem by offering their (Europe only, so far) 2.0 twin turbo as well as the 3.o and 3.o TT in the USA. I love the idea of a stripper yet performance focused 1 series. They also have a 2.0 diesel with high torque ,and BMW needs to offer LSD as well.

I think the 128i is going to be a sleeper. I personally am more interested in a "no hassle" N/A engine. turbos are too laggy and suprchrgers are too hot and eat gas (though fun to have). 230 hp in a 3000lbs bimmer is more than enough for my daily haul. I would opt for the sport susp. too.

With the exception of the hp shortfall, this car would presage a welcome return to BMW's true forte -- building small ultimate driving machines. With a little Hartge, Alpina and/or BMW Motorsport "magic" this could become a quite remarkable vehicle. I think incorporation of the traditional Motorsport (pre-MPower) colors and motif woul truly make the design a stand out. Trying to appreciate the awkward looking and ill-conceived'07 MINI would no longer be a drain on my enthusiasm as well. Bravo tii!

Having owned a couple of pristine Tiis in the past, it's nice to see BMW playing off their heritage. However, at nearly 3,300 lbs, the 1 series out weighs the original Tii by ~ 50%!

Blah blah blah. Our biggest problem with the 135 yesterday was the weight. I've always thought my 2700lb "mini" was a bit heavy. A 135 @ over 500lbs more is rediculous. I want Lotus weight cars when I hear mini or "2 door sport coupe" or it's just another refab'd saloon. Then this tii comes along to address our issue but there's no number there and the peanut gallery here can only estimate a 100+ lb loss. And you know that this version will be as expensive as a M roadster is to a regular z4. Not worth it.

I was excited about the 1 series, but the way it's weighing in, forget it. I'm going factory five for my next rear-wheel drive car and keeping the Mini!

gmini,

Yes, a question I have about a few cars lately...but why does the ultimate driving machine - 335 in particular - weigh 3,600lbs? Another more pedestrian auto maker increased power in its coupe to 268...wow I thought until I read it is bumping the 2,700lb mark...sorry Honda and BMW, you need a diet!

I've read that the tii should be in at around 3,000lb flat...

BMW is so fk’d up. This 1 series reminds me dead on of the 1983 325i i learned stick on and drove til it's sorry death. Why the heck did BMW have to grow it's 3 so frickin huge?

Silly question i suppose. especially as it's answered a bazillion times. Big thumbs up to this potential rocket.

Add my name to the order list. If BMW is determined to upstage the MINI then this attempt has achieved the objective handsomely. Bravo tii !

Lots of talk about "lightweight" this and that, but I can't see how this will be more than 100lbs lighter than the standard 135, which will still put it over 3000lbs. Gordito.
