The Countryman is beginning to win my favor despite its non-MINI scale and potential to dilute the integrity of the MINI design tradition. I am intrigued by the design’s renaissance use of a glass curvilinear c-pillar. Is there hope that it will return to grace the Cooper and Cooper S? What about those five-lug wheel carriers … is this a grand indulgence that the BMW bean counters will soon regret? Despite these considerations, I think the Countryman will succeed in the MINI lineup and create a new enthusiast niche with legions of after-marketeers in the queue ready to turn this baby into green. Caveat emptor: The danger lurking will be — what cost hath this Mighty MINI fully spec’d out (of the market)?

What about those five-lug wheel carriers … is this a grand indulgence that the BMW bean counters will soon regret?

They were probably required because of the vehicle’s weight. Unfortunately it was mentioned here that they are not compatible with BMW 5 lug wheels.
