MINI USA Releases 2011 Pricing

The moment many of us have been waiting for as arrived. MINI USA has had pricing done and ready to go for some time but has held off releasing it until the 2010 model year came to a close. Now that it’s closing in on September the time was right and the numbers were released late yesterday to dealers across the US. Here’s the old vs the new (with $700 included). Our analysis after the break…

R56 Hatch

  • 2011 Cooper: $20, 100 (2010 $19,500)
  • 2011 Cooper S: $23,700 (2010 $23,000)
  • 2011 JCW: $29,800 (2010 $29,500)

R57 Convertible

  • 2011 Cooper: $25,550 (2010 $24,950)
  • 2011 Cooper S: $28,550 (2010 $27,850)
  • 2011 JCW: $35,000 (2010 $34,700)

R55 Clubman

  • 2011 R55 Cooper: $21,800 (2010 $21,150)
  • 2011 R55 Cooper S: $25,500 (2010 $24,750)
  • 2011 R55 JCW: $32,000 (2010 $31,700)

For the Cooper S it’s roughly a $700 increase across the board. In our minds it’s a pretty reasonable increase considering the more powerful and equally efficient engine, updated transmission, new entertainment platform, updated design inside and out not to mention Sirius and HD radio now coming standard. In fact if you put a 2010 at $700 less right next to a 2011 it’s pretty clear that the new car gives you quite a bit more for a little bit more money.

We’ll have much more regarding the details of 2011 pricing soon.

As of 2 pm PDT Saturday, MINI USA site and configurator still showing 2010 info.

    Still waiting for the R60 . . .

  • Barry

I hope they included something meaningful to justify part of this $700. :-( Maybe standard Xenons on the Cooper S.

  • ml

@Barry, they are including HD Radio and Sirius for a year for free. That was a $500 option each before, so just that alone justifies the $700 increase…

  • Rmb74

With all of the upgrade that seems like a good value. If I could have waited a year before buying my 2010 clubman S I would have. No regrets though.

  • Jas

Here is what i read from a MA:

Most options pricing look the same. Cold Weather package is now 750.00 Headlight washers $100.00 – no longer part of Xenon headlights.

MINI Connected and MINI Navigation not available until Dec production. Aero kit and Value Package no longer available on MCS models.

  • Barry

    Thanks, ML.

  • Melissa

Wish I could get my paws on a options pricing list…

  • rhawth99

For an already expensive small car, this is quite a price jump. For those of us that don’t care about subscription radio, it is truly a $700 jump in price with no extra value. I’m glad that my wife and I purchased an ’10 Clubman in March when the price discounts were good. I was looking forward to the Coupe coming out next year but at this rate it will be out of my price comfort point.

  • ml

Well the subscription is for Sirius, you still get HD Radio which is free. Then you just have to factor in the general upgrades in materials, lights, etc. It’s better than I thought it would be.

  • Adam

ML, I’m with rhawth99 on this. If Mini decided to do a bulk purchase of a $500 leather gloves and throw in a pair with each car, that certainly doesn’t mean I want to pay an extra $500.

It seems a big jump in a recession.

  • rkw

For the S, there are the Valvetronic engine and brake ducts. The manual tranmission is improved and there are numerous changes throughout the car that arguably have extra value. Compare to the $750 increase in 2009 with truly no additional value besides DSC becoming standard. That said, I’m dismayed at the steady price increases over the years and I may be priced out of MINI when it comes time for me to change.

  • Robert

    HD Radio == Jumbo Shrimp

It’s a fad. One that doesn’t belong in a price increase.

  • Alex

Im seriously surprised that MINI USA decided to break the 20k mark on their cheapest model. Even though its only $600, theres a giant difference between $19k and $20k in consumers’ minds.

  • Barry

I want to see how much the torque steer has been reduced. Almost entirely is worth almost $700.00 in my opinion. You Cooper S guys might be use to it but thats what stops me from getting one of my own. My Father has an 08 and I love it but I could grow tired of wheel being yanked from me.

  • hemisedan

2010: You forget that in 2009 that the multi-function steering wheel was a $250. option, it became standard, as it should be, in 2010. Sure, there are lots of little things that Mini did during the refresh for 2011, but still, many are improvements that they felt needed addressed, as the torque steer situation. As for the torque steer being a deal killer, think again, as torque and power does this. Maybe to eliminate torque steer, they should have just adjusted the power down so that it was no longer felt. Still, in saying that, it’s still difficult to accept a constant $700+ increase each year, when the Mini is already pricey enough, especially when you consider the options that have to be bought, that are standard on mini’s competition. Yes, the VW GTI is a competitor.

  • BORINOT

Correct me if I am wrong, but not quite they have been improvements, the system of Professional navigation has transformed in Bussines (low model of BMW) and the control distantly universal for opening garage has disappeared.

It’s more like a $1000 jump in price if you were interested in the cold weather package, yes?

I expect that MINIUSA was given 2 choices. Either drop the options completely due to relatively low demand or make them a standard feature. Considering all the other improvements, the price increase is very modest. The increase in production volume of the components allows MINI to keep the price increase modest.

As Gabe has said previously, this is why options like LSD have been dropped. If there is not sufficient volume of certain options it is no longer cost effective to produce them.

Apparently not. Let’s break it out, shall we? This is for the R56 MCS:

    • 9 more HP (5% increase)
    • Improved transmission
    • Updated audio controls
    • Improved interior controls (better quality, also matte black instead of silver)
    • 30% sunroof tint (previously 10%)
    • SIRIUS and HD Radio standard (previously $500 each)
    • 1 year SIRIUS subscription included
    • Anti-torque steer programming in power steering
    • Better soundproofing (quieter ride)
    • Dynamic brake lights

All of the above for $700. Sounds like quite good value to me – certainly a MUCH better value for the price jump than all of the model year price changes since 2007!

  • Jas

Sounds like every package pricing is the same, except CW. The only new changes:

    +$750 on MSRP

CW is now $750 (was 500) and includes headlight washers if you have Xenons/HIDs (they are 100 if not with the CW package)

Auto-dim side mirrors are $250. This apparently will add in heated/folding side mirrors and the auto-dim rearview mirror. I don’t know if they charge extra for all of that or it’s included in the $250.

$100 for adaptive Xenons (on top of the 500 for Xenons)

and I assume the MINI Connect is 1000 and NAV is 1750 as Gabe has posted already.

I can’t remember if I have asked this already, but does anybody know if it is possible to get the FKE1 Cloth/Leather seats that are shown on the UK-site? My dealer told me that only Toffee and Rooster Red seats are available in Cloth/Leather combo as he knows of now. MiniUSA hasn’t also been able to answer me on this, they just keep on saying “we do not have further information to share” which is what they email me back to almost every question. Am I asking the wrong medium? Has anybody been able to order the FKE1s? Thanks in advance.

  • Martial

Why not increase the price of Minis? The market sucks, people are still losing their jons and houses. Mini, Mini, Mini when will you take you head out of your muffler and realise that you should lower the price of a car already too expensive. But hey, you might soon, with Fiat 500 coming, the IQ Scion coming, the Ford Fiesta coming, you are not anymore the onlu cute car out there. Remember, onc eyou lose a customer, it takes at least 2 to 4 years before he’she will look at a new car purchase.

Hasn’t the U.S. dollar strengthened against the U.K. pound and the euro? Why yes, it has.

A year ago, one euro would buy you almost $1.43. And one pound would buy you $1.64. Today one euro will only buy about $1.26 and one pound will only buy about $1.54.

Let’s be charitable and use the pound, exclusively. Last year on a base MINI Cooper BMW collected 11,890 pounds for each sale. This year BMW will collect 13,052 pounds for each sale, or 1162 pounds more. That’s a 9.8% increase. Translated back into U.S. dollars at today’s exchange rate that’s an increase of $1789. And all of that is just for the base MINI.

In the past we’ve heard lots of reasons why BMW increased prices allegedly due to the exchange rates. This year…let’s just say the exchange rates combined with the U.S. price increases are very much in BMW’s favor.

If Mini wanted to be truly competitive they should have made their new infotainment system standard. It might be better than Sync but at least Sync comes standard even on the upper level Fiestas.

Mini may have made a bunch of great improvements to make the 2011 dynamically better but the exterior is a let down. I think people will think where has the extra $700 gone to if they can’t really see it.

  • Heidi

Wish there was European Delivery for MCS. Hoping that MF can ask this from Vinnie the next time they see him.

Then again, if you were thinking of getting the Nav system you’re back to $700 … or $450 if you weren’t getting the CW package. :)

The side scuttle on the Cooper S is Black on the German site. But its chrome on the UK..I hope its black on the USA spec ones? Take a look at it here, Select the side view of the car, then just move the mouse over the white circle on the scuttle to see.

    http://www.mini.de/mini/cooper_s/design/index.html

  • Jas

Here is a pic of the black side scuttle i mentioned on that site: http://i34.tinypic.com/20sdhjp.jpg

  • Bill in Iowa

Ya, I like the black side scuttles too, but I’m afraid that here in the USA we will be getting the chromed ones. Maybe, just thinking here, that the chromed scuttles might be part of the chrome package, like with the brake ducts and rear fog light trims. An idea, anyway.

  • Noah

Though the add-ons might retail for $700, most people won’t get an additional $700 of pleasure out of the changes. These are largely knick-nacks that most people don’t care much about. This is a very aggressive price increase at exactly the time when: (1) Exchange rates should favor a price cut, and (2) a weak economy should favor a price cut. What a disappointment!

  • Noah

It should be added – yes, the new car is an improvement, but that’s expected with time and the advance of technology. The price hike of 4% isn’t justified by just keeping up with changing times.
