The UK Prime Minister Turns Up for MINI #2,000,000

MotoringFile Sections: Events, In the Press, Official News Aug 31st, 2011 11 Comments

MINI is a British icon, so it’s no surprise that UK Prime Minister David Cameron would be there when the two millionth MINI rolled off the assembly line. The white special edition MINI Convertible was driven off the line by the British head of state himself. Mr. Cameron also got a tour of Plant Oxford showing off facilities still under construction that will accommodate the next generation MINI. Full details and photos gallery of the one-off two–millionth MINI after the break. continued →

MINI Brings Red Bull Art of Motion to Detroit

MotoringFile Sections: MF Feature Aug 30th, 2011 12 Comments

Tune in to next week’s episode of White Roof Radio, as our man Chad was at this event and will tell us all about it.

[Official Release] With flips, forward and backwards summersaults, jumps over an abyss and other spectacular elements in his routine, Gustafsson (SWE) won over a four-person jury and thrilled the crowd. “Free Running is all about passion, it’s a way of life. There’s hardly an obstacle that I can’t get over – or at least try to get over,“ said the victor with a broad smile. The Russell Industrial Center was converted into a paradise for Free Running already on Friday and on Saturday evening thousands of fans crowded along the shore of the Detroit River around Hart Plaza to witness the finals. continued →

File Under Old News: Paceman Going into Production

MotoringFile Sections: R61 (Paceman), Rumor Aug 29th, 2011 12 Comments

NAIAS 2011

It seems as if the rest of the automotive press can’t quite get it right when it comes to the Paceman. First there were those patent renderings that were wrongly reported to be of the production Paceman when in fact they were simply for the concept car. Then today Car and Driver reports (with great fan-fare) that the Paceman will go into production. The only problem? It was confirmed for production last January by MotoringFile and other European news outlets.

And those three doors Car and Driver keep talking about? We’ve confirmed with a number of sources that the Paceman will indeed have “activity doors” (aka suicide doors) on both sides. Five doors in total if you’re counting at home. continued →

MF Garage: The Rail System (Good, the Bad & the Exploding)

MotoringFile Sections: Accessories, MotoringFile Garage, R60 (Countryman) Aug 29th, 2011 11 Comments

We’re almost 1,800 miles and over a month into our time with the Countryman and we’ve talked about the design, drifting and just living with the R60. But today we’re going inside.

The rail system is one of those great ideas that I find it hard to believe hasn’t been done before in the automotive landscape. What MINI has done with the rail and its accessories is to de-couple the functional needs of an interior from the design and engineers time-frame for a car. What do we mean? MINI designed and engineered the Countryman from around 2006 to 2009. And while designers and MINI’s strategic planners can envision lots of things, they can’t predict the future. The rail gives them freedom to not have to.

Similar to what Apple has done with apps on iOS, MINI has given us the system. Now it’s up to MINI’s own after-sales and the aftermarket to take up the challenge. Why? Because as you can see in the photo above, MINI hasn’t quite gotten everything right with the rail’s included accessories. continued →

MINI WRC Team’s Early Tarmac Success Analyzed

MotoringFile Sections: Countryman WRC, R60 (Countryman) Aug 26th, 2011 No Comments

Official News via MINI Motorsports: Strong debut: In Sardinia and Finland, Dani and Kris faced the opposition on gravel. Positive test results had given the MINI WRC Team great hope of good performances on tarmac, too. The fact that the MINI John Cooper Works WRC performed at an almost identical level to its Ford rivals at Rally Germany, and at times even held its own against the Citroen cars, was a positive surprise for all in the team. continued →
