The wraps are off of the new MINI Roadster. Now it’s time to tell the public about it. Enter the advertising campaign.
Official Release: The successful market launch of the MINI Coupé is being followed by that of its accomplice, the new MINI Roadster. The new MINI Roadster is the first open-top two-seater in the MINI family to be equipped for any experience. With its special licence to go on a new adventure each day, it’s the equal of its accomplice, the MINI Coupé, in every way. Whether it’s in Jamaica or in sunny Istanbul – MINI fans worldwide will have some real driving fun. This is clear from the current cross-media campaign with the start of the online film “Saturday in Istanbul”. First it was the hatch. Then the convertible. Fast-forward ten years and we have what you see above; an entire family of MINI options. With the launch of the last R56 variant MINI thought it was appropriate to get them all together for one big family photo. We can’t blame them. But we also thought it was time to celebrate just a bit. So we’re offering you an ultra hi-res version of the photo above as the ultimate MINI desktop wallpaper. Now the real question: which is your favorite MINI?

Great news for fans of the MINI “Dakar” racing team. Not only did a Team X-raid MINI Countryman take the checkered flag at the Baja Portalegre 500, but among more than 500 other race entires, MINIs took two other spots in the top ten. As if that weren’t enough, this victory secured the defense of Team X-raid’s FIA World Cup title. With just two months until Dakar — the Superbowl of off-road races — MINI is looking good to make a major run at victory. Official details after the break. continued →

The year-over-year sales results for October are in, and led by best-yet Countryman sales, MINI is up 37% overall. The afore-mentioned Countryman, which has been on sale in the US since last December, had its best month to date with 2,012 units sold state-side. Last year we predicted the Countryman would eventual eclipse sales of the hatch this winter. As you’ll see after the break it’s around 50 units sold away from doing that already. To say the Countryman has been a success in the US market is a bit of an understatement.
Also interesting are the sales numbers on the Coupé, which at 414 units, is only outselling the Convertible. Look for that number to rise with a full month of sales and better awareness of the new model, but also expect the Hardtop and Countryman to stay at the top and battle for the sales lead over the next year.

The US specific numbers are in and the MINI Roadster is starting to look more interesting. As expected, the all important curb weight has been brought down on each model. For instance for the Cooper S, the Roadster is 66 lbs lighter than the MCS Convertible (2,745 lbs and 2,811 lbs respectively). In fact the R59 Roadster is only 9 lbs heavier than the Coupe on which it’s based. There are a few other surprises as well.

The MINI Roadster is the convertible many of us have been waiting for. Sleek and sporty with a classic manually operated top, this is as back to basics (and light) as a factory option top MINI has ever gotten. But how exactly does the top differ from what the R57 convertible offers? In many many ways. Let’s take a look.

Two years ago we asked you a simple question. Roadster or Coupe? At the time they were just concepts. But that didn’t stop opinion from being incredibly divided. And when we say divided we mean not only were there strong opinions but it was split down the middle exactly 50/50. In fact well after over 1,000 of you voted there was only 10 votes separating the two.
So now that both cars have been shown in full production form, we wanted to revisit the question and see if opinions have changed.
