More Official DPSM Information from MINI

MotoringFile Sections: DIY, New Product Oct 28th, 2004 15 Comments

For those of you interested in the new Digital POWER SoundModule from MINI here's another official PDF explaining the accessory as well as providing further installation and techical information. There's a few bits of info that may be of some interest right off the bat. For instance it would seem that the DPSM is not available for those with the HK system. Further it looks as if the DPSM will only work with cars produced after 10/03.

You can download the entire PDF here.

Update: We now also have the official MINI install instructions for those interested in not only how it works but how it goes in. You can download the PDF here.

New H/K option to Replace HiFi Stereo

MotoringFile Sections: Accessories, R55 (Clubman), R56 (Hatch), R57 (Conv.) Jul 21st, 2009 20 Comments

MINI will be replacing the premium stereo option in the entire line for 2010. Gone is the often derided HiFi system and in it’s place will be the new Harmon Kardon system featuring digital signal processing. Both systems were creating by Harmon but the HiFi had some cost taken out and ultimately suffered for it.

As we’ve previously reported the new H/K branded system will feature a 480 digital watt (down 80 from the previous dealer installed DPSM system) and should include up to 10 speakers all told. MINI asked Harmon to create an this new system in 2007 designed in the same vein as the (now almost mythical) DPSM system available on the R50 generation. The result should be a huge bump in almost every aspect of sound produced. We can’t wait to hear it. continued →

Apple iPhone
Forget toting around a separate music player anymore, the iPhone is everything you’d want in an iPod and (almost) everything you’d want in a phone. It also works well with the official R56 iPod adapter and flawlessly with the R56’s bluetooth as well. Price: $400 | Retailer: Apple.com
Official MINI iPod Adapter
You’ve got an iPod and a MINI. You want to listen to your iPod in your MINI but you don’t want to scroll through 160 gigs of music while taking a 55mph sweeper. You’ll want to get the official iPod/MINI adapter. It allows just enough use of the iPod’s interface via the head-unit controls while remaining simple and easy to use. Even better the R56’s iPod adapter gives you total access of your iPod or iPhone. But it also costs almost $400 more. (all MINIs) Price: $150 (R50/R52/R53 and $500 (R56) | Retailer(s): Outmotoring (R50/R52/R53) / Outmotoring (R56) / Morristown MINI / Knauz MINI / Patrick MINI / Otto’s MINI / MINI of Manhattan / Westchester MINI / Prestige MINI
Digital POWER SoundModule
If you want to give (or get!) the ultimate MINI-related audio gift, you’ll want the DPSM. When I first heard the DPSM I was absolutely blown away by the quality and depth of sound and all volume levels. It almost defied logic. (R50, R53) Price: $1650 | Recommended Retailer(s): Morristown MINI / Knauz MINI / Patrick MINI / Otto’s MINI / MINI of Manhattan / Westchester MINI / Prestige MINI
MINI AUX Port
The cheap and simple alternative to the official iPod port. It also has the upside and working with any device that has a standard audio output. Not bad for under $40. (R50/R53/R52 – pre-2006) Price: $30-$40 | Recommended Retailer(s): Morristown MINI / Knauz MINI / Patrick MINI / Otto’s MINI / MINI of Manhattan / Westchester MINI / Prestige MINI

Updated: We've obtained a bit more information about the DPSM via an internal MINI document you can download here.

MINI UK Press:

The Digital Power Sound Module (DPSM) is the latest and loudest addition to MINI's range of in-car entertainment accessories.

Approximately three times more powerful than the average home stereo, the DPSM has a full range digital amplifier that kicks out an awesome 660 watts of power.
