MINI just dropped a prototype – an augmented reality pair of drive glasses that blends the functionality of the car with the outside world. Will they remain a prototype or will MINI build them? Will they succeed where something more macro like Google Glass failed? So many questions. We should have more (including videos) shortly.
Official Release: MINI is revealing the shape of things to come at the Auto Shanghai show with a pioneering innovation. “MINI Augmented Vision gives an insight into how intelligent connectivity between a MINI car and eyewear into which relevant content is projected might work in the future,” explains Dr. Jörg Preißinger, project-manager MINI Augmented Vision, BMW Group research and technology. “Working with several Qualcomm companies, we have created an interlinked system and augmented reality eyewear with a characteristic MINI design that revolutionise the experience both in and outside the vehicle. This prototype with its customised, interactive functions succeeds in fusing augmented reality with the brand’s trademark sense of lifestyle.” continued →

We’ve always loved the JCW suspension. It’s given the MINI more control at the limit while often improving comfort on the road. However the one rub against it has always been the lack of adjustability – especially when compared with aftermarket coil-over systems. For the F56 MINI has rectified this by taking the GP’s coil-over suspension and adapting it to the F56. continued →

During a short afternoon break today, I nerded out with a couple of friends about online back-up. The conversation turned into a Who’s the Biggest Nerd contest and for once, I lost. The winner came up with Navdy. If you don’t know what it is, I’m sure you’ll want once after reading this post. continued →

MINI has released the first images of it’s F56 accessory line-up. As expected MINI is focusing on the simpler items out of the gate, stickers, mirror caps, matts and a couple of wheels. But there is on item that could be particularly interesting and a bit of a game-changer for some owners. Check out it and the full gallery of accessories after the break and note not all will be available in North America initially. continued →

A few weeks back at this year’s Geneva Motorshow an MF reader noticed something odd about the fogs of the R56 hatch on the MINI stand. The Foglights were completely different and 100% LED rather than the standard bulbs. A closer look revealed even more. They were fully LED, and illuminated in three ways: the upper half of the halo only, the full halo, or the full halo and the fog lamp lit up.
In the words of MF reader Jason who spotted them, “They look amazing – much better than stock.” However surprisingly the folks at the MINI stand knew nothing about them. We know they were an officially MINI part since they had the world “MINI” stamped into the center of the light itself (and of course they were on the stand of a major auto show).
Over the past couple of week We’ve done some asking around but have thus far come up empty. So we turn to you dear MotoringFile reader. Does anything have any light to shed on these new LED fog lights? Are they unreleased accessories? Or maybe a sneak peek at what to expect on the F56? Or perhaps just MINI designers having a laugh?
Hat tip to Jason for the photos.
