MINI concept cars have traditionally served one of two purposes: a design exercise showcasing future brand-direction but not bound for production or a thinly veiled version of a near production vehicle. The stunning MINI Superleggera Vision unveiled at the 2014 Concours d’Elegance at Italy’s Villa d’Este and the Rocketman Concept at the 2011 Geneva auto show fall into the former category. The latter would contain the 2010 Paceman Concept and the 2009 Roadster Concept and Coupé Concept. But in a society fascinated by both transportation and dreams of the distant future, what is MINI imagining beyond the edge of the automative horizon?
The answer is the MINI Design collaboration with online magazine Dezeen “Frontiers – The Future of Mobility” which will have an exhibit at the 2014 London Design Festival. continued →

Official Release: When the first classic Mini, made in Birmingham, went on the market on August 18th 1959, none of the people involved at the time are likely to have imagined that the concept of a revolutionary small car would turn into one of the automotive industry’s most impressive success stories stretching over a period of five and half decades. 55 years ago, two models were presented to the public which differed solely in their radiator grille, hub caps and paint finishes: the Morris Mini Minor and the Austin Seven. Designer Alec Issigonis’ concept was both simple and ingenious: lots of interior space combined with minimum exterior dimensions, four seats, perfect driving properties, low fuel consumption and a reasonable price. These brilliant ideas had an impact that was to extend into the 21st century.
