BMW Introduces 360-degree Collision Avoidance & Fully-Automated Parking

File this under technology to watch. With more and more technology now shared between MINI and its parent company BMW, we fully expect to see these technologies not just reach mass production in BMWs but MINIs as well.

Official Release: BMW was already demonstrating at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2014 how perfect control technology can provide highly automated mastery of all drive statuses right through to very tight margins. Innovative sensors will allow BMW to demonstrate a number of features at the CES 2015 (6 to 9 January, Las Vegas) including the possibility of entirely collision-free driving. This success plots another benchmark defined by the specialists at the BMW Group on the road route to individual mobility free of accidents with a driver and also in fully-automated mode with no driver at all. continued →

BMW Group’s DriveNow Launches in London

DriveNow is a carsharing joint venture by BMW Group and Sixt SE

DriveNow is a car-sharing joint venture from the BMW Group and the car rental company Sixt. Through this partnership BMW contributes the vehicles and automotive technology, while Sixt provides the services, the car rental know-how, the IT systems, and an extensive network of stations for customer registration. The program is now available in Munich, Berlin, Dusseldorf, Cologne, Hamburg, Vienna, and San Francisco with already has 360,000 registered customers.

Last week however, BMW annouced the availabilty of the service across three Londong boroughs: Islington, Hackney & Haringey. 210 1 Series and MINI Countryman will be available at launch, but the fleet will add 30 all-electric i3 cars in spring 2015, expanding it to a total of 300 vehicles during the course of next year.

This initiative is part of the BMW Group’s strategy to remain relevant in space imapcted by growth in urban living and shared owership. Unfortunately we haven’t had a chance to try it, but we’d love to hear you feedback if you have.

MINI Extends Dakar Rally Commitment until 2017

Official Release: At its meeting today, the Supervisory Board of BMW AG took the first steps to initiate a generational change at the head of the company’s Board of Management and Supervisory Board. Harald Krüger will become Chairman of the Board of Management effective the end of the Annual General Meeting on 13 May 2015. The current Chairman of the Board of Management, Dr. Norbert Reithofer, will be put forward for election to the Supervisory Board at the 2015 Annual General Meeting. Moreover, the Supervisory Board expressed its support for the proposal that Dr. Reithofer – subject to his election to the Supervisory Board – be elected to the position of Chairman of the Supervisory Board after the 2015 Annual General Meeting. continued →

Euro NCAP Advanced Award Goes to the MINI Driving Assistant

Official Release: The new MINI in the premium small car segment is the leader not just when it comes to driving fun but also in the field of active safety. This status has now been confirmed by the independent safety testing institute Euro NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme), in particular due to the new driver assistance systems. MINI has received the Euro NCAP Advanced award 2014 for its pedestrian warning system with city braking function. The system forms part of the Driving Assistant option for the new MINI 3 door and the new MINI 5 door and is rated by safety experts as a groundbreaking innovation in reducing the risk of accidents in urban traffic.
