The Future of Mobility by MINI and Designer Jaime Hayon

MotoringFile Sections: Design, Official News Feb 26th, 2015 No Comments

citysurfer_concept_268-highResSince its rebirth, MINI has partnered with a variety of designers to reflect on the future of urban mobility. In light of the 2015 Milan Furniture Fair, also known as Salone del Mobile, our favorite brand has decided to team-up with Spanish designer and artist Jaime Hayon. While these associations may seem obscure to some, the goal for MINI, its designers, and engineers is to inform their view of automotive design and possibly gain a new perspective on the matter. It is interesting to note that MINI’s and Jaime Hayon’s exercise is based on the MINI Citysurfer Concept presented during last year’s L.A Auto Show in November. Official: MINI Coupe and Roadster to End Production This Year

MotoringFile Sections: Official News, Production, R58 (Coupe), R59 (Roadster) Feb 13th, 2015 38 Comments

What was just a whisper a couple of months ago, is now a reality. Today MINI is announcing the impending end of production for the R58 Coupe and R59 Roadster. As you may remember, MotoringFile is quite fond of the Twins, to the point that we awarded the Roadster the title of best commuter car ever. Since we don’t know if they will ever be replaced, it is with mixed feelings that we see these two go. On the other hand and given how much love they have received from enthusiasts, it would not surprise us if they turned into sought-out collectors’ items in the near future. On a more positive note, if the Superleggera ever hits production, it would surely make for a worthy replacement. Godspeed, Coupe and Roadster.

Official Release: Changeover at MINI Plant Oxford: while worldwide demand for the new MINI 3 door and the new MINI 5 door launched a few months ago increases continuously, production of two model variants from the preceding generation of the original in the premium small car segment is about to come to an end. continued →

MINI USA Sales Up 27% for January 2015

MotoringFile Sections: Official News, Sales Feb 3rd, 2015 14 Comments

F55_4DoorHardtop (62)The first sales figures of the year are in! The result is good but don’t get carried away by the headline above. With 2,543 vehicles sold during the same period last year, January 2014 was MINI USA’s lowest sales volume since 2010, which puts in perspective the 26.9% difference with January 2015. When looking back at previous years, January 2015 is only 454 cars shy from matching MINI USA’s best start ever and that was back in 2013. I guess that sticker issue didn’t help. BMW & MINI Increase Vehicle Security after Hack

MotoringFile Sections: F55 Five Door Hatch, F56 Hatch, Faults & Fixes, Official News Feb 2nd, 2015 13 Comments

Say what you will about the technical deficiencies that led to the ConnectedDrive hack, BMW & MINI have turned around a fix very quickly. They’ve also used a worldwide over the air update to eliminate the problem – the first time we’ve heard of an international update like that ever.

Due to the nature of the security flaw it’s only found in vehicles with integrated cellular connections. Therefore the only MINIs that are affected are the 2015 F55 and 2014-2015 F56.

Official Release: As the leading manufacturer in the networking of driver, vehicle and the surrounding environment, the BMW Group is increasing the security of data transmission in its vehicles. This is the company’s response to reports from the German Automobile Association (ADAC). The motorist’s association had identified a potential security gap when data is transmitted. The BMW Group has already closed this gap with a new configuration. continued →

MotoringFile Sections: Official News, Sales Jan 27th, 2015 No Comments

superleggera_concept827Management changes are not only happening at the Global level but also across subsidiaries. Last week, MINI USA named  Mark Orlando as Department Head of Sales. He will replace Sadir Haji who has been given to role of Head for Regional Sales & Marketing in the Eastern Region. For 2015, one of MINI USA’s goal is a strong push on sales and adverstising at the national and local levels, and these nominations appear to be in line with David Duncan’s strategy.
