Here's an important update for all those who purchased an MC40 (via a MotoringFile reader):

I received a package from MINI USA today containing a letter and a new MINI “Horseshoe” keychain. The reason for the gift was the fact that many new MC40s came with the incorrect shift knob installed. Many MC40s came with the “standard” MCS knob instead of the “commemorative” MC40 knob. The letter explains:

“Some MINI Cooper S Monte Carlo 40th Anniversary vehicles were born at the factory without correct shift knob installed.”

“We are pleased to announce that the special MC40 shift knobs are now available for post-birth installation. The Monte Carlo shift knob will be installed free-of-charge to those MC40 vehicles born without this knob.”

The correct shift knob for the MC40, according to the letter, is S25 04 U02 versus S25 04 U01 for the “standard” MCS knob.

This would explain why I have seen some MC40s with the incorrect shift knob installed. I thought dealers were hocking them. My MC40 came with the correct knob, however, the “special” decal on the knob keeps peeling off. I have asked the dealer to replace it. They have had a difficult time coming up with the part number for the knob.

The letter closes with:

“Let's Motor and please accept this MINI Key Chain as a thank you.”
