The New York Times has a piece on how Yellow is quickly becoming the new stand-out color to have, in many cases replacing red in it's traditional role. In the article they of course feature a Liquid Yellow MCS. Here's an excerpt:
Laurie Reiter, 49, an ultrasound technician from Youngstown, N.Y., is from the school of car buyers who thrive on attention. She considered red when she was buying a 2003 Mini Cooper, but decided it was too common. As she browsed the showroom, “Liquid Yellow” jumped out as the perfect fit.
“People just buy cars for transportation,” she said. “But there are still a few of us who really love our cars.”

Okay all you Liquid Yellow owners… here's your chance to represent!

I really like the Liquid Yellow interior body color, it looks absolutely awesome, the contrast between yellow and the black of the rest of the interior. I would love this combo. 🙂 Which isn't to say I don't love my HB/B…

From the article:
'”Carmakers are needing to redefine their brands,” said Lorene Boettcher, a global design and color marketing manager at PPG Industries, a paint manufacturer. “There's no better way to do it than with a bright yellow.”

And Mr. Cressy says yellow complements the new, hard-edged car designs: “It makes that shape pop.”'

I think the trend has less to do with making things “pop” and more to do with the growing interest by westerners in Asian culture, where yellows, oranges, and dull reds are common. I believe this influence is filtering into the design houses. I also think that flat yellows age are not tied to a specific period of automotive development the way say, a cherry red is tied to the '80s.

Personally I think they need to make the Liquid Yellow more like Audi's Imola yellow; it's a bit too milky right now. But I would definitely get the yellow Lotus Elise mentioned in the article…

I agree with you about Liquid Yellow, I think it could use a bit more vibrance. However in some lights/contexts it looks very bright, similar to Imola Yellow, and it just looks awesome.

We think Smileee looks perfect. Of course we're a little biased. After all It's our car they are talking about. :)

Cheers,
Jack and Laurie

Sorry Petsounds, I have to disagree…Liquid Yellow is perfect just the way it is 🙂 One of the reasons I chose it for my MCS was because it has a lot of white in it and therefore not like every other yellow on the road. I love Imola yellow on the Audi, but not for the MINI. Colour is such an individual thing.

You want attention! Hot Orange is the color of choice in California. Though of Liquid Yellow, but too many taxis use that color. My only competition is with the Scion Xb special edition. Talk about a head turner.

I've just finished with a run of red cars. Amazing how many times I was told by law enforcement types, how easy it was to pick me out – and I'm not a lane changing monster mby any stretch. I went with Pure Silver and it is a bit boring. I wanted Hot Orange or yellow. Would have looked great with my BBS RG-Rs in Black Satin. Next time???

I'd rather be RED than dead. (:

I totally agree with BudD. It's nice of the Times to notice yellow, but IMO Orange is the next up and coming hot color.

MINIUSA should get Hot Orange onto the hard top MINIs and fast.

Maybe the reason she attracts so much attention in her MINI is that people are in shock that she prefers those ugly-ass wheels to MINI ones..

Liquid Yellow 🙂 🙂 :)

My wife & I wanted a Yellow MINI, but Liquid Yellow wasn't bright enough for us. Went with Chili Red. Got two other Red sports cars and only have one ticket in the last 11 years. Try driving a 40 year old VW Bus if you want cops to really notice you!!! :)

Smileee looks great! We need more yellow up here in WNY where the sun doesn't shine much from November to March!

Hmm, 40 year old VW bus- do the cops notice you for not maintaining the minimum speed limit? My parents bought their first VW bus in 1959, 4 or 5 buses since then, and now my dad is shopping around for another one. Good times!

My LY/B looks great. Everybody loves it and notices it. If you are driving a big, fat, slow SUV you can see me from waayyy faaarrrr baacckk there, after I scoot by.

I must say, I'm surprised. I personally hate the yellow. Not the specific shade of Liquid Yellow, but yellow cars in general. When I first started seeing MINIs on the road, it seemed I was seeing mostly LY, and I thought “ick, who would buy that color. Apparently a lot of people”.
Just my opinion of course- and apparently most of the world disagrees with me. I have (and love) BRG, and was checking out edmunds online, and its “tips for higher resale value” and they said green cars about just about the worst sellers.
That's the beauty of the mini- there's a combo out there that's perfect for everyone.

Every since Doris Day drove her convertible bug over the Golden Gate Bridge, I've wanted a yellow car. Love the shade of yellow on my MINI. Has anybody noticed that the yellow on the new beetle changed a few years ago? When the car first was released, the yellow was soft and sunshiney, now the newer cars have a harsher, brighter yellow.

My poor “Max” (2002 Cooper, chili red) was not happy to read he has “become common, even sedate”. NO WAY!
Yellow is just fine! But RED is as much fun as it ever was.
