From MINI UK Press:
From October, the hatches on the Oxford production line will be a little hotter than before. For the first time, the 210bhp John Cooper Works (JCW) engine tuning kit will be available as a factory fit option when ordering your MINI Cooper S in either hatch or convertible form. The cost of proud ownership of the most powerful and quickest official MINI on the road will be an extra £3,600 (inc. VAT).
A MINI Cooper S fitted with the tuning kit is capable of generating a top speed of 143mph and reaches 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds. The ‘Works’ features a modified cylinder head with higher compression, modified engine electronics and increased throughput injectors. The factory option will also include the following JCW products as standard: air filter system, 16″ disc brakes and calipers, exhaust pipe finisher, front apron and tailgate badges, certificate of authenticity. A limited slip differential is also included in the cost.
Mike Cooper, managing director of John Cooper Works, has been heavily involved in the introduction of the kits at Plant Oxford. He said: “I’m pleased that the partnership with the new MINI has been such a success. The kits offered as a factory fit option shows how closely we work together and will provide us at John Cooper Works more time to develop further high performance products.”
The JCW kit will still be available to MINI Cooper S owners as a retrofit offered by all 157 UK MINI dealerships and John Cooper Works garage in West Sussex. Cost is £2,999 (inc. VAT, plus 10 hours labour). The retrofit does not include the additional specification included on the line of JCW sports brakes and limited slip differential.
MF Analysis: While this should all be old news to MotoringFile readers, it is nice to finally see an official press release on the topic for the UK market. One would imagine that MINIUSA will be releasing their own official information on the topic in the coming days. Even if we did scoop all the US specific info awhile back!

We’ll have more on the new JCW options for 2006 (including photos of two new 18″ wheels) tomorrow.

From a Cooper to a Cooper S, hp goes from 115 to 170 (55 extra hp) for an extra $3650. From a Cooper S to the factory installed JCW Kit, hp goes from 170 to 210 (40 extra hp) for an extra $6300. I’m not sure it’s worth it — Financially, that is. ;-)

Look at it this way… To go from a Cooper to a Cooper S you’re paying about $66.36 per ‘horse’. From a Cooper S to the JCW Kit you’re paying $157.50 per ‘horse’.

The JCW Engine kit really isn’t about HP figures. It’s about how the car feels. It’s about how flexible the power is and how cohesive the package feels in day to day driving.

It’s not cheap power… that’s what the aftermarket is for.

16″ discs? Wow! :-)

Good ole UK press releases… sometimes they just don’t quite get it all right 😉 Maybe something got lost in the “translation”.

Yeah, I wondered about those 16″ disc brakes… that’s one helluva lot of stopping power… I wonder what size wheels you’d need to fit them? 21″?

Good for JCW – I am sure this will generate more sales; good for MINI – more profit at the factory; good for the customer – (slightly) lower cost; good & bad for dealerships – more sticker profit but less install labour.

I will be very interested to see the “official” government MPG ratings on a JCW equipped car; they surely have to display a different rating to the normal MCS …

I wonder if this will cause a difference in insurance premiums since it is now a new factory engine spec.

Yeah, there’s a lot of potential impact of this change both for insurance premiums and for autocrossing. Becoming a factory option is VERY significant.

I gave FULL disclosure to my insurance agent when I bought my ’05 JCW MCS. I even gave them copies of the “authenticity” certificate, and a copy of the buyer’s order. I wanted to be VERY sure that they would cover ALL of the cost of the vehicle in the event of an incident. Since their computer didn’t have anything higher than MCS, it hasn’t cost me anything more, yet… but I will have valid claim for full payout if something DOES happen.

As for autocross, the interesting question will be: Is the JCW going to be recognized as a “stock” class car? If so, will they only recognize ’06s, or will it become retroactive for previous years too?

I want one of those jackets those guys are wearing.

I can’t wait until the 06 orders start!!

Hey Gabe, wasn’t there talk about the Aero kits being factory installed for 06 as well?

Yes, Gabe, I second that question . . . will MINI offer factory installed Aero Kits for ’06 as rumored? I certainly hope so! I think this would be a big hit, since they should be able to offer a much better price than the dealer installed option, and the kit really improves the look of the MINI.

Great news ! Thanks ! My second MCS W will be ordered soon ! Yes its a magic car and its not only a matter of hp. I was so deseperate to separate from the first one last april….BUT just a question about the clutch ? stock or reforced ? factory guarantee ?? what mileage ??……..

There may have been some talk… but there has been no confirmation.

I read a comment that the factory JCW kit will require the sports package, but that doesn’t make sense to me unless the brakes require 17’s. True or False?

Seeing that picture makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. I can’t wait to put my order in.

Anyone have an idea on how this will affect SCCA classifications, now that it’s a FACTORY deliverable option ??

BB

So, Have they fixed the issue with the JCW logo discoloration on the intercooler?

SOMAKE – The sports brakes DO require 17s, almost. Why almost? Because there are a select few official MINI 16″ wheels that will fit the brakes, but most of them won’t. See previous MF articles on the JCW sports brakes for details.

Capn – I agree, very frustrating issue. Happened on mine too, of course. Seems they need to use a different compound of spongy rubber for the air intake seal on the intercooler. The standard one is fine for the regular MCS (since it has a black cover anyway), but it’s incredibly annoying on the silver cover.

Aren’t those 16″ rims on that car?

No, those are the 17″ Web Spokes (R98).

Chris, they’re 17″ Webspokes.

In canada, there is a “works” package available as a factory option long time ago. THat include, the sport package, works tuning kit, 17 web spokes rim, slip differential. Cost about 6500 more CAD. You guys can check here. http://www.mini.ca

Is the JCW Suspension going to be a factory option and cost???

Actually (despite how it was marketed) that was not a factory option but an option installed at the VPC or the dealer. The MINI Plant in Oxford had never had the ability install JCW components until this October (the pic is pre-production).

So the JCW brakes and the limited slip will be part of the works package? That’s $2000 extra I shelled out for my ’05. When mentioning the cost per HP one must factor that cost in. It now appears to be a good deal. If the suspension was included it would be a GREAT deal.

I second the comment about wanting one of those jackets.. I just got back from England, and of course took the tour of the Oxford Plant.. ever since I have been searching for one of those jackets..

So, did you buy the upgrade for the extra ponies. Becuz lets be honest – some of us need the extra HP to scuttle around!

For US related questions about the factory JCW kit, please take a look at the two previous articles from last month listed above.

It could almost outrun an M3!
Almost.

Ow he’s yelling make him stop make him stop!

Gabe,
cheap power? How about inexpensive power? ;)

Will this option be avaible in the US?
