(A little non-MINI related automotive content today)
For years the word “Rendezvous” meant one thing to auto enthusiasts; a Ferrari 275GTB screaming through Paris in the early hours of the morning. I first learned of Rendezvous as a kid when my uncle introduced me to his (then new) VHS copy back in the late 80s. At the time I was just floored by the concept. Today I’m inspired by it. For those who aren’t familiar with it, here’s an explanation from hypertextbook.com/facts/2005/Rendezvous.shtml:
>C’etait un Rendezvous is the creation of the French filmmaker Claude Lelouch in 1976. Using a Ferrari 275 GTB early one August morning, Lelouch attached a camera to the bumper of the car and sped through the streets of Paris. He gave the driver a set route from Porte Dauphine, through the Louvre, to the Basilica of Sacre Coeur, which is straight through the heart of Paris. The driver is still unknown to this day, because Lelouch was never able to obtain a permit to close the streets. The driver, who Lelouch told officials was an F1 racer, went over the speed limit and blew off many red lights. When this film was first shown, Lelouch was arrested, and because of this, the footage has spent many years underground before it began to resurface on DVD a few years ago. Lelouch used a new technology of the time, a gyro stabilized camera mount, in order to mount the camera on the car. The problem with this is that the technology of the time only allowed for a ten minute film with this mount. Lelouch told his driver to rush because of this time limit, and the video itself is only about nine minutes. In our velocity graph, we used all footage of the car when it was in motion.
The resulting ten minutes are priceless.
Until a few years back it was only available in the US on VHS for something near $80. A few years back the film was remastered and sold on DVD in the UK and Europe. Then about a year ago it finally made it’s way over to North America, first via the grey market, then finally by official means.
Due to the story behind it and the length, I always thought this would be a perfect film for internet distribution. Now that it appears to be widely available on the web I thought it was finally time for a C’était un Rendez-vous MotoringFile post.
Now you may be asking yourself, how does this all relate to the Mini? Well at the 6:50 mark our hereo in the 275 GTB almost side swipes a white classic Mini. In fact, he doesn’t even lift.

Since everyone loves maps these days, below is a link to a detailed Google Map illustrating the route in the film. If you know Paris, it makes the film even more fascinating.

Ferrari is superior all!
The sound alone would make this unforgettable. The visuals only enhance it. I’ve seen it a few times. Now I own it. M
great post gabe. haven’t watched this vid in a while, i just may have to this morning.
Thank you so much, i have been looking for this video for years!
Gabe, great posting. I have heard of this but have not seen it before – has always been hard to find.
How about a small prize for the person who correctly identifies:
1. the number of red lights he runs
2. the number of pidgeons he scatters 🙂
3. the number of people who have to jump out of the way (check out the woman on the curb as he passes the trash truck)
4. the number of ‘no entry’ signs he runs through…
Wow that was very cool. Never heard of that piece of film. Nothing like that Ferrari sound. Saw a few 2CV’s.
Saw a man in a business suit ridding his bicycle, in the middle lane, in rush hour traffic no less, around the Arc de Triomphe a few years back.
We’ve been playing Rendezvous in our MINI Showroom every now and then for quite some time now. It’s always a hit.
<blockquote>We’ve been playing Rendezvous in our MINI Showroom every now and then for quite some time now. It’s always a hit.</blockquote>
I’ve seen it at Knauz MINI as well. I wonder if this is done elsewhere?
Lelouch was a serious gear-head. “Un homme et une femme”, (A Man and a Woman), may be the best car flick ever when judged on depth and character, let alone the racing and rallying sequences, and of course, Anouk Aimée – the Woman. Yum. I always thought Trintignant, the Man, was the best realization of a racer ever filmed. The sequel has an awesome racing scene for openers, as well. “C’était un Rendez-vous” was a staple at midnite movies for years, and inspired many a lead-foot.

I’ve never seen that before and I was absolutely blown away. I agree, the sound alone is half the thrill. It’s also fun to see all the great old cars he goes wizzing by. Awesome.
Wow.
I must be getting old, because that scared me. Exhilarating, but incredibly stupid at the same time.
No police?
Also noticed the BRG/W mini parked at the end and a red one parked that he passes.
Oh my god….thanks Gabe!
I doubt it could be done in Paris of today, at least like they did it.
A man and a woman is good, a bit sappy but good, my choices would be 1. LeMans, 2. Bullit, 3. Vanishing Point, 4. Grand Prix and then Ronin or Transporter (1).
<blockquote>I’ve seen it at Knauz MINI as well. I wonder if this is done elsewhere?</blockquote>
you saw it here, cause you gave it to me 🙂 we watch lemans everyday, and grand prix every other day.
C’est si bon!
Tres vitesse!!!
As crazy car movies go, but, not racing the original “Gone in 60 Seconds”. Was shot with one car and features some crazy REAL stunts.
I’ve only seen it once and it was a VHS copy. Fun to watch.
I was just in Paris a week ago. That’s.. that’s a pretty wild route to fly through.
VERY Cool…I never heard of or seen this run! Im a young guy
I heard about an ad that was done similar to this that showed at the movie theaters. It was an ad for some car. Does anyone know whose ad it was and where it can be found on the web?
Im thinking that there may be a cool modern re-make that was quickly squelched by someone who thought an ad like this would be a liability…
an ad… Well nissan did somthing similar in a former soviet republic for a commercial. It was pretty cool, it was staged, but not as cool as this.
Yeah that sounds like it. I seem to remember it was a nissan ad. So probably no modern re-make out there huh? 😉
Goosebumps – YEAH!
Thanks Gabe, the whole extended family will have to sit for a viewing of this on thanksgiving. Cheers to fine sports cars and precision driving at the limits
I think there is a modern day version of a guy who goes nuts around different cities in a black go-kart. I can’t remember the exact details but it’s supposed to be pretty intense as well.
Thank’s for posting that great video for us.
In 2003 Nissan made a video similar to this called “The Run”. It was made to promote the new Z car at auto shows and they handed out a few copies of it on DVD. It was filmed in Prague and I believe they did close of some roads for it, but it is very similar, the ending is practically the same. It’s a cool video if you can find it.
The name of that Nissan ad was called “The Run”, it was used to promote the new Z car at auto shows. It was filmed in Prague and the roads were closed off for it. They handed out a limited amount of copies of it on DVD (which I have). It is a cool video but not as good as Rende-vous.
Awesome post, Gabe – thanks. 🙂
One question… am I color-blind, or is that a <strong>yellow</strong> Mini that crosses in front of him? Assuming we’re talking about the same car (the one you showed in the still pic in the story).
It’s white… the yellow color comes from the Ferrari’s lights.
Ah… I just looked again and yes I see now, it’s white before it gets lit up by the lights. My bad.
To keep the juices flowing, try this one:
<a href="http://testudladry.free.fr/jcc_videos2005/2005_gemenos_castellana.wmv" rel="nofollow ugc">http://testudladry.free.fr/jcc_videos2005/2005_gemenos_castellana.wmv</a>
I’m at work and can’t play quicktime videos… Anyone have a link playable in windows media?
So, whos going to be the daring one to go through New York City streets in a MINI?
Tanya, linky no worky, care to fix? I am curious to say the least!
How do you know this film is for real and not someone who just dubbed the sound and did a dry run slow and sped up the tape.
Sorry, TJM – trying again. The link works before I paste it in, but I think Motoringfile is stripping some underscores out:
<a href="http://testudladry.free.fr/jcc_videos2005/2005_gemenos_castellana.wmv" rel="nofollow ugc">http://testudladry.free.fr/jcc_videos2005/2005_gemenos_castellana.wmv</a>
Yes, underscores are being removed. Don’t know what is going on. Trying with quotes around the url:
There you go:
<a href="http://testudladry.free.fr/jcc_videos2005/2005_gemenos_castellana.wmv">2005gemenos_castellana.wmv</a>
Damn, still not working. There should be one here: “jcc_videos”, here: “2005_gemenos” and the final one which seems to be preserved: “gemenos_cast”
I give up.
Dave,
I’ll try to answer your question regarding the authenticity of the film.
uh…, because pigeons can’t fly in slow motion?
On a different note, those Apollo Moon Landings sure have me stumped.
– Thomas Doubting
Tanya –
Gabe got it workin’, and that’s a great one! Thanks!
BCNU,

One time I got 12 reds and then I got 16 reds???????????
Did he honk at the Mini?
Damn! I need to learn to shift gears like that!
On a side note, <a href="http://quickwired.com/kallahar/stories/2004-Apr23/trip.php" rel="nofollow">This Guy</a> drove from LA to Oregon on Interstate 5 for almost 10 hours, and then cut 99 out of every 100 frames from the video he made of the trip.
Its basically a 6 minute video of his car flying down the highway… if you weren’t nauseous enough from the video in the article, try his.

Hey try this one:

I’ve got the DVD for over a year now and have to watch it at least once a month. The sound is the best!
Salut
Philip
Those top rally guys make Formula 1 jockeys seem a bunch of pansies! (In my opinion only, of course).
Is it just me or does the sound appear to be dubbed in later? I didn’t think they had that kind of sound quality available for an on car camera.
I have always loved this video, have had it for a few years on a bootleg VHS. And now I can have it on a DVD!
Thanks Gabe !
Here’s another crazy drive to get your goosebumps out. The (much debated) <a href="http://www.daveakerman.com/~tchurly/2003.wmv" rel="nofollow">Elise storming Stelvio Pass</a> in Italy (4m09s).
Hi !
You may try that one too !
<a href="http://www.nmd.com.au/downloads_download.cfm?ID=1" rel="nofollow">Climb Dance</a>, featuring Ari Vatanen in his Peugeot 405 Turbo16 at Pikes Peak.
Ari Vatanen only plays with his own life and masters what he does.
The stupid Ferrari driver is very skilled, no question about that, but he also plays russian roulette with crossroads. That doesn’t show any skills. It only proves how dumb one can be.
Remember that people die or get injured in car crashes involving drivers like that one.

<blockquote>Is it just me or does the sound appear to be dubbed in later? I didn’t think they had that kind of sound quality available for an on car camera.</blockquote>
This was not the middle ages! They had pretty good stuff in 1976. They used a regular camera with a special mount for this. sound would not have been an issue.

Blech. The camerawork is horrible!
Oh, we lost Markdown syntax with the WP upgrade? Booo! 🙁
<blockquote>On a scale from 1-10, how happy are you with your life?</blockquote>
WTF kind of question is that?!
Can someone please post the C’était un Rendez-vous video in wmv (windows media format)?
<blockquote>Oh, we lost Markdown syntax with the WP upgrade? Booo! :-(</blockquote>
No.. just the blockquote tag. It’s apparently a known bug in WP.
<blockquote>If you had to pick one, who killed JFK?</blockquote>
Oh no! They cannot be serious!
(ok, I’ll stop now, but this survey is a mite ridiculous…)
To dr :
If you can’t read the original video, you can download <a href="http://www.videolan.org/vlc/" rel="nofollow">VLC media player</a>.
It is available for most operating systems.
Or just download <a href="http://apple.com/quicktime" rel="nofollow">Quicktime</a>.
the problem is that here at work I am behind a firewall and settings do not allow download of any exe or zip files. at work I have blazing fast newtwork download unlike at home where I would have to download all night. So a wmv link would be nice
I wonder what speed he was going? (maximum and average?)
I finnally got it downloaded and watched it….That was SWEET! That is very cool!
If anyone else has movies please post the links
A guy did this video of Rauno Aaltonen driving an old Mini on the Santa Monica racetrack at the Mini United in Misano. (3 amazing days, I was there :o)).
<a href="http://www.megamini.it/writable/Misano/rauno.zip" rel="nofollow ugc">http://www.megamini.it/writable/Misano/rauno.zip</a>
it really rocks to watch the movie on my PSP, YEAH!
I turned on my TV for the first time in about a month last night, and my TiVo had a little nugget for me on the front page. It was a behind the scenes look at Nissan’s latest commercial for the 350Z (which I do truly lust after…). The commercial itself is kind of cool (they closed the streets of LA for the filming), but some of the shots taken during actual filming were way more interesting. I don’t know if you can find this thing online (it’s only 4 minutes, but I don’t have a way to rip it off my TiVo) but if you’ve got a TiVo, give it a watch!
Rendez-vous is an all-time classic!
Great article and thanks for the links!
Fantastic movie!
However, after doing some math I figured the Ferrari was doing 85 miles/hour in the straight…so is he not going that fast after all, or where am I going wrong? (60 seconds to do the 1.3 miles Champs-Elysees)
Beautifull…
More please! 😀
The car it’s not a Ferrari but a Mercedes 6,9 !
I found this on YouTube today and while it somehow destroys the legend, it’s still very interesting to watch (if you know French!).
<blockquote><strong>C’etait un Rendezvous – Making Of</strong>A making of, 30 years later, with Claude Lelouch explain each detail of when he made this film in 1976, takes the same route, with the original car used, of the film. Very interessing.

I bought a copy of C’etait un Rendezvous last month from dvdsource well worth buying incredible bit of filming.
