Interesting. I can’t figure out why you’ve gotta remove the weatherstripping around the hatch opening.
I would love to find an aftermarket solution for integrating my GPS antenna with the regular antenna. I don’t want my MINI looking like a recent GM vehicle (XM and OnStar and radio, oh my!) or a cop car, but I would like to get better reception than I can get with the antenna stuck on the dash. I’m tempted to run the GPS antenna through the same hole in the roof and modify the standard antenna housing so allow the wire to pass through so they can be mounted next to one another…
Does this change the standard antenna to a different styled one?
I would love to get an antenna that is like the new ones on the 5 series and the range rover…the fin shaped ones
Thanks
BTW – Thanks to Edge for jogging our memory on this one.
Bring back the shark fin!
Gabe – nice to see this up! Are you going to add them to the DIY page too? (<a href="http://motoringfile.com/diy" rel="nofollow ugc">http://motoringfile.com/diy</a>)
Blalor – which GPS do you have – the factory OEM one? I have it, and I also have the OEM SIRIUS installed… it CAN be done, despite what the dealer tells you… you just need to use an aftermarket antenna instead. I’ll try to get a small write-up done sometime soon, with pics.
Yes – I’ve got about 6 months of PDFs to add to the DIY page!
Too cool. Thanks Motoringfile!
Can you have the Sirius receiver installed with the H/K stereo and OEM iPod adaptor?
No, Edge, I’ve got a Garmin StreetPilot 2610 with a Garmin GA 25MCX external antenna.
I could just route the antenna toward the back of the car and then out the hatch, sticking it on the roof, but then I’d have that cable visible. 🙁
So the sirius module is a dealer installed option only? I thought they would throw it in at the factory.
The factory is in the UK… SIRIUS is a USA-only system… so it makes much more sense as a dealer option here.
If you’re brave enough you can always buy the parts and put it in yourself… or of course you can go aftermarket. I wanted the OEM one for the “clean” integration, although it costs significantly more than an aftermarket system that you would connect to the Aux input.
Hoping this covers the convertibles…..
OK, I think my previous question was ignored…
Here it goes again:
1) Can you have the OEM Sirius integration with your H/K stereo and the OEM iPod adaptor already in place??
2) Can you add the AUX input jack to your H/K stereo if you already have the OEM iPod adaptor installed??
Much appreciated!
Frank
1) As I understand it, yes… but you may need another adapter cable. The OEM SIRIUS receiver uses the CD changer cable to operate… but it also has a “pass-through” port. The pass-thru (when used with the appropriate cable) is primarily designed for allowing you to keep the CD changer, although it can be used for ANY device that takes the place of the CD changer. If I’m not mistaken, the OEM iPod adapter does this. I know that aftermarket solutions such as the Dension Icelink Plus do that.
2) Absolutely! The Aux input jack plugs in with a completely separate plug on the back of the head unit. The only catch is that very early MINIs (i.e. some 2002 models) came with head units that did not support the Aux input. If your car is newer, you shouldn’t have a problem at all.
Edge, thanks for your detailed response.
Now my next question… OEM Sirius or aftermaket?
Aftermarket sirius is anywhere from $50 to $100 for a standalone (plug and play) tuner. You’d need to either use the built in wireless FM modulator or buy the aux input, for $40 or so. More expensive models include replay, so if you miss something (like during a game) you’ll get 30 minutes you can rewind.
The MINI kit, even if you install it yourself is going to be over $200. If you have a dealer install it (so that you get a warranteed installation) its 2 hours of labor according to the PDFs.
I wanted the official kit, and was psyched when MINI teamed up with sirius, but its just so much more expensive for an only slightly cleaner install, I couldn’t justify it.
Another example of MINI offering cool things, that are so expensive compared to other options, it doesn’t make sense (Bluetooth phone integration, Nav system and even the iPod adapter I’d say is borderline)
Alan, thanks for your reply. As much as I like the cleaner OEM Sirius integration, I think I’ll get one of those plug and play receivers instead with either the AUX input or the FM transmitter which will allow me to use the receiver on both of my MINIs. Unlike the iPod connection sound quality, I am not that demanding when it comes to the sound quality of the Sirius receiver.
Does anyone can recommend a good plug and play Sirius receiver with the FM transmitter included?
Thanks!
i have two. i really like the Sirius One (SV1) that i have in my car because it’s small – it’s $49. i have the Xact (Xtr3ck) in my home office – it’s $39 at best buy and the home kit is $49. i can take it one of my other two cars and the FM transmitter is strong enough to cover my house.
Mike, htanks for the suggestion. I’ll check this out and take it from there.
scatpack,
It looks like this is just for the hardtops. The MINI dealer in Portland oregon tells me that MINI USA doesn’t support converibles for built in satellite radio, XM Direct or Sirius.
I have XM Direct installed, but in a really funky location, with bad drop outs all over town. I got half excited when I saw this headline in NetNewsWire. I was sad to read it’s still only for hardtops.
Officially only for hardtops, but it has been done… there is NO electrical reason why it won’t work in the convertible. The problem is where to install the reciever (less side pocket trunk space in the cabrio)and where to install the antenna… likely an aftermarket antenna will be required instead. It HAS been done, but it’s definitely not the cost-effective route.
I was wondering if there was an updated Antenna Installation Instructions for P/N 84 11 0 393 780. The instructions that I found is for the pre ’05-’06 antenna dated June 2004.
It seems that the actual removal of the OEM antenna and wires is different for the different model years.
Thanks very much for any help or information you can pass along.
Rick
I was able to figure it out.
There are just two plugs from the stock antenna that need to be disconnected. There are two quick disconnect type plugs mounted in a holder just to the right of the antenna mast looking foward. Once you find them you can just pop them out of their holder.
It was a very easy job…the only hard part was getting my hands into the tight spot without hurting the headliner.
BTW, MINIUSA re-released the OEM Sirius tuner and a new magnetic puck-style antenna which uses a coaxial barrel-type connector in October ’06. I assume this was to solve the compatibility issues with NAV. THe integrated Nav/AM/FM antenna can now be used and Sirius can still be added because of the separate/dedicated Sirius puck. Still no antenna or kit released for the cabrios.
<p>Do you have these instructions available for the R56 model? I have a 2012 Cooper</p>
