Generally when we get two requests for something within a week, it’s time to get busy and start posting. In this case it’s the new Universal Bluetooth kit. But DIY-ers be warned. This isn’t exactly a plug and play installlation.

Broken link? I found http://motoringfile.com/howto/official_mini_bluetooth.pdf – not sure if it’s the same or not.

7 years later :-)

those instructions are for a different kit. the only instructions I’ve seen for the universal handsfree kit are in german. I’ve posted some here http://bit.ly/10CJnJi

Ian – that’s the old one. The new much more integrated kit is the one that is linked above (which now works btw).
Gabe, I get a 404 when following the link to the PDF.
Check it again. It works fine for me (right click, save as)
Wow, how much is this retrofit typically from the dealership?
Well, beyond my DIY limits. How much does this cost for the dealer to install? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?
It says 3 hours for installation. It would take me longer than 3 hours just to read through the instructions – much longer.
Would be a nice feature however. Hmmmm.
I’ll glad provide my MCS JCW to Gabe or someone smart enough to make this happen. Of course, you’ll have to come to Texas for it.

Very cool – I still want it! 🙂
Nozz… MSRP cost for the kit is $1250, which does not include the required center armrest (if you don’t have it already), for another $250 (again, MSRP), and finally, you need the correct “snap-in adapter” for your model of phone, which is either $125 or $140 depending on the phone.
So, before labor, the MSRP price could potentially be:
$1250 + $250 + $140 = $1640
Add the 3 hours of labor, and you’re pushing close to $2000.
And I’ll say it again – I STILL WANT IT! 🙂 Now, to just find a cheap enough parts supplier so I don’t have to pay that crazy money to get it. I especially love the fact it will tie into my factory Nav. 😀
It just seems easier to get a bluetooth headset and plug the phone into the lighter adapter. Much cheaper, and you don’t have to tear up your mini to do it.
I looked into all these options; my dealer told me it would cost $800 to install a BT kit, I don’t think that was the one above. So what I did was buy the Sony-Ericcson HCB-300, and the plug-n-play adapter from the guy in England (I forget his name right now), and did the install myself using the MotoringFile pdf for replacing the stereo and the HCB-300 instructions. I don’t think it cost me more than $200.
The only other thing I’ve ever installed in a car is the autoup cicuit, so I was physically nervous to do this. It took me about an hour, and worked perfectly the first time. I LOVE it, and anyone who rides in my MINI and experiences it in action wants one immediately. Here are the pro’s:
– you don’t need to dig your phone out or have it handy to answer a call
– YOU don’t have to do the pair, its automatic as soon as you give the car power
– you don’t have to worry about not hearing the phone ring (it turns off the stereo) so you can turn the volume UP
– you don’t have to charge it! (I had a BT headset, but whenever I wanted to use it, it was either dead or at home in the charger!)
– you can shift, turn sharply, basically – DRIVE, while you are driving…. its more like having someone in the car with you than being on the phone.
I highly recommend this BT option (with a little patience or a LOT of money for the install) to anyone with a manual!
Here it where the plug n play came from

Excellent work Lisa. That’s the same kit I’ve had my eye on for quite some time.
As far as I am aware, none of the aftermarket kits tie into the factory Nav system, right?
I’ve got Mikethemini’s Parrot Evo kit and while it doesn’t fully integrate into the Nav, the Nav does now have a “Telephone” entry on the main screen (doesn’t really do much), and when I’m using the phone (or it rings) the Nav screen shows a “Telephone” display so I get both visual and auditory feedback that a call is either in progress or the phone is ringing. Of course, the h/k display also says “PHONE” simultaneously, and I can use the MFSW’s two phone buttons to answer/end calls.
All-in-all, I’m exceedingly happy with the kit and the customer service I received. It would be nice to have a fully integrated BT solution which displays telephone content on the Nav screen, but the Evo kit was well worth the money and gets me about 90% to where I’d like integrated BT to be.

PREACH ON BROTHER. Looking more like the option I will go with. Plus it will work in both cars.
Has any one installed the motorola IHF 1000 in their car. If so is it possible to use the microphone space in the headliner already there?
