And if you plan on buying the Gear Knob and/or E-Brake kit, don’t forget to support the MINI dealers that make this site possible:
Oh dear. What were they thinking? Completly wrong shape gear shift for a mini. Looks like it came out of a 1990’s Toyota MR2. This is the type of gear shift that lives on a car with a much higher transmission tunnel, and a lower seating poistion.
Shame they couldn’t hook up with Doug Whalen for a real quality product.
Actually I love the feel of it in my hands. Much better than the similarly shaped Momo I had a while back. It’s really well designed. Not sure I was opt for it personally though.
And btw – what’s with all the negative comments lately? I don’t remember anything you’ve ever actually liked.
The sticker is funny, “right in the line of view” incase they forget the pattern?
If you don’t know it you should not drive it.
The sticker looks cheap on the dash, you think they could have put a cap top on the JCW shifter?

It’s obviously for liability reasons only. I assure you They don’t expect anyone will mount it but it absolves them of responsibility if you ass it up! At minimum it will help bolster theyre case in court if they are ever called to task about it. There is a MINI owner out there in the world who will sue due to something like this I guarantee it. The lawyers were no doubt involved in that aspect.

They want you to put the shift pattern on the dash? Tacky!
>They want you to put the shift pattern on the dash? Tacky!
That’s the lawyers talking.

The comments are negative because I don’t like it. Am I not allowed to provide a negative opinion?
Every mini I have ever owned has had a round knob – its the right shape for a mini and as far as I’m concerned is part of the Mini DNA. This think looks like its come out of my local ‘ripspeed’ catalogue of aftermarket tacky plastic tat.
I have seen some fantastic designs from Doug Whalen that blow this thing away. Just because something has some ‘in vogue’ C/F and a sticker doesn’t make it right. In fact, I’d prefer a a decent gear knob to have more weight and feel to it than a ‘lightweight C/F’ effect.
I would point out also that I run a $54,000 Works, so I’m not a JCW basher just because its the ‘in thing’ to do.
Love your site, always first with the news – how do you do it…????

The shifter has CF in it but that doesn’t mean it’s lite. I’ve seen Engine covers made with CF but they aren’t lite either. This shifter is the perfect weight and feel. I’m sorry if you’ve decided it sucks without seeing or using one in person. I guess it’s all about looks with you then. Oh well, to each their own. I think it’s a vast improvement over the round “knob” that comes stock. Why you think a round knob is in MINI’s DNA is beyond me.

I didn’t see the problem with tonyT’s comments? Correct me if I’m wrong but doesn’t it say it say….”Submit Comment”? Seems odd a comment like….” Ignorant Yank” was not pulled. This person was not being abusive but just stating his views.
But then I like eggs!
Alright Tony – just curious 🙂 You’re welcome to all the negative opinions you want… I just wanted to hear more of what you didn’t like about it. Actually I agree with some of your points. However for the record – that is real CF on there. Not that I condone that sort of thing on a shift knob!
And also for the record I also dig the Whalen stuff as well.

Hey tony T, what on earth ran your Works up to $54,000? Just curious. I have a Works, fully optioned ’05 S with an Aero Kit, driving lamps, etc., and I was out the door for $37,800. Do tell!
So, not only do they want you to put the sticker on teh dash, they want to use one sticker for both 5 and 6 speeds with 2 seperate diagrams on it?
Has anyone been able to actually purchase the JCW shift knob? My dealer keeps telling me that the part # is not valid in their parts computer.

mostly the stupid price difference between UK and US markets I guess….
Its a pretty full spec car, including (when new) JCW alloys and JCW seats, its also had around $3000 extra spent on the engine (around 230bhp now) and some of their little ‘extras’. list cost was about £30000 all in.
Oh, and £80 for a great Whalen shift machine!
Could someone please advise me as to how to install the JCW gearshift knob. I have reviewed the DIY PDF and it appears (mabye I am visually impaired) that I remove the old shift knob simply pulling off in a vertical manner (God knows I should be good at that…) anyway that didn’t work.
So what is the trick? Any practical advice on this installation would be appreciated.
Thanks
Tom
yes just pull straight up, cautin it will be stiff so when it comes youll hands will go with it- dont be too gentle or it wont come- have fun
