According to a couple sources the optional MINI sunroof will be adding a feature for 2007. We can now confirm that the rear portion will pop-up to act as a vent. If you look at this picture taken by MINI2 at the recent R56 preview press event, you can clearly see the seam on the back portion of the roof.

Gabe do you know if the new sunroof has opaque shade? The reason I passed on a sunroof in my 2006 was the need to wear a hat while driving. The additional venting will be a welcome addition.
wow – that vent would be great! i bet that would help with a lot of the wind noise….
hmm… the rear vent is nice. The interesting part of the photo for me however was the larger antenna mount. Looks like we’ll finally be able to have nav and sat radio without the additional hockey puck on the roof. I’ll have to try a retrofit for my 05.
Hmmm, also interesting is the multi-piece, 3 legged rear spoiler instead of the previous models’ 2-legged 1 piece spoiler. I have to wonder why; if perhaps it lifts or somehow changes shape at higher speeds, or perhaps opens up for lighting, GPS, alarm systems or even another 60 square inches of storage space…
You put your weed in there.

Not saying it doesn’t vent but the visible seam doesn’t mean anything.
All MINI sunroofs have a seam in the back.
I dont see what your reffering to Gabe. Can you add a pointer at what I should be looking at please….?
BMW needs to move to a “fin” only type of antenna for the Mini rather than that 1-2 foot tall beast they use.

Classic! ha ha
I’d much rather have side windows that open at the rear. Customizing!
Any clue whether it will be manual or powered?
I really don’t see how this photo leads you to believe that the rear portion will pop/vent. Doesn’t really look any different than any other MINI sunroof to me.
What am I missing?

Actually the photo doesn’t show it as clearly as my sources are telling me about it. However if you look closely you’ll see the photo clearly shows the seam which is different than current car.
You do realise that this was specifically mentioned in the Mini2 review don’t you??

Even with the roof broken up with the huge sunroof (which now features a tilting rear panel as well as tilt and slide front section), it looked the business.

Hadn’t read that but I guess there’s more confirmation for the doubters.
Crashton…even if they don’t have a ‘real’ shade in the next MINI, you can rectify the see-through shade issue. I took a windsheild shade ($4.77 at WallyMart) and cut it into two separate pieces…one for each sunroof. I then used some bead/edge material and sewed it on. Voila: custome sunroof shades that pop out whenever I want.
The difference in interior temperature when parked in the sun is astounding…I have NO idea why we didn’t even have the option for a real sunshade.
Oh…and some companies that do roof decals have sunroof decals as well. These should cut down on the sun passing through, but such a decal would, obviously, not be easily removed on those occasions when you do want more sun…
Os.
Is it retrofitable? lol Somebody had to.
I wonder if the driver can open it from the front driver seat? Or is it all under the control of the rear passengers?
Will there be a similar option for the Convertibles?
Other thought, can we still put our EZ Pass in the rear window? That would suck if it flew out when we opened the back window. LOL
