I really liked the second and third ones. Well done.
Playing devil’s advocate, I’m a little curious as to how they’d want to show the reckless driving in the first spot. Even though I like to see stunt driving, it almost feels like they’re condoning or even glorifying it.
I know BMW films was all about that, but at least you could see the fictional side of those spots. In contrast, these are regular guys acting like a couple of fools running havoc on public streets.
Plus, the last thing MINI drivers need is to have that kind of reputation on the road.
Excellent! Though I’m sure we’ll never see those on US TV.
Anyone know where we can find better-quality versions to download and keep? Those are worth putting in the archives. 🙂
MINI IS condoning and glorifying reckless driving… Hell ya they are… Its an ad and obviously just for fun… Your the type of people they print “Warning: HOT!” on coffee cups for… LOL! Well officer… I saw a MINI ad where they were driving even faster then I was. Why Can they drive recklessly and I can’t!?
I have them and a few others on my website in the 2007 section as well as quite a number of others in the video clip area. I’m a MA at Westchester MINI and would appreciate feedback on my new site as well.
I love them. Though I understand it, I heartily dissagree with dickdavid’s point of view about advocating reckless driving. It comes back to personal responsibility. How you behave on the road is your choice and ultimately your duty to obey the law and common sense. Good Motoring means being safe and courteous on the road and I would hope that gets just as much airplay and emphasis within the brand, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have some fun with it while you’re at it.
What these ads do well is showing the MINI in its natural habitat – performance driving on everyday roads. Should you be doing a four wheel drift around corners at 12th and Main? Of course not, but people need to realize that if you wanted to, the MINI would be the perfect choice. That’s the one element missing from so much of the MINI advertising in the past – a fact not so widely known outside the enthusiast community – that the MINI is, as Autoweek described it, “An exotic sports car masquerading as practical transportation.” The performance aspect of the car, though plainly obvious to all of us, is lesser known to the car-buying world at large. It’s the one key benefit left understated in all the branding I’ve seen. And when I finally got my MCS, its performance capabilities were beyond my even well-informed expectations. So I’m all for ads like these.
<blockquote>Your the type of people they print “Warning: HOT!†on coffee cups for… LOL! Well officer… I saw a MINI ad where they were driving even faster then I was. Why Can they drive recklessly and I can’t!?</blockquote>
Actually, I’m not. Apparently, both you and I are aware of the obvious, so the warning labels are useless.
Also, I didn’t state that folks would copy the commercials. I just feel it portrays the MINI driver as a reckless, thrill seeker instead of a performance enthusiast.
There are fun, more fictional ways to do this, as done with the BMW films for example. They still drift through the cities recklessly, but you get the fantasy back story of Clive’s character and his situation. Show those stunt scenes out of context and I would have felt the same way: not a good way to sell cars.
<blockquote>…It comes back to personal responsibility. How you behave on the road is your choice and ultimately your duty to obey the law and common sense. Good Motoring means being safe and courteous on the road…</blockquote>
I agree with you, Nathaniel and I’m not saying that MINI drivers aren’t responsible, safe drivers. I’m stating that it portrays us as just the opposite.
It’s nice that MINI is showing what these cars can actually do, which is well over due. I’m just not completely on board with the context.
Show that spot with no other cars (even though just parked) would help sell the fiction and dial up the fun. IMO.
The third MINI spot implies speed and performance successfully without the hightened sense of recklessness.
That was fun! Can’t wait until they show up at the dealers. You don’t need a warning sign on these commercials just common sense, and a heavy right foot.
…I really enjoyed the commericals for the 2007 MINI Cooper and Cooper S. Hopefully, this will help dispell the notion that the only thing that the MINI brings to the table is that they’re,”cute”,cars. Also;in closing…come on,DickDavid…nobody can be that stupid to watch these commericals;then, think out loud,”…hey…you mean if I buy those cars,I can do cool stuff like drive in an underground tunnel/sewer and drive fast through a cornfield;and make popcorn with the air scoop?” Wait a mintue…I’m looking up from my laptop and watching,Bill Mahar rip,”Georgie Boy”,a new one…never mind that last statement…you may have a point there,DickDavid…
Based on some of the comments, I see that I’m not articulating my meaning very well. My fault.
1) I DON’T EXPECT ANYBODY TO AGREE WITH ME and I’m not trying to convince any of you to do so. I just wanted to explain why it didn’t sit well with me.
It’s a fine MINI commercial that is shot really well. For some reason, it struck a small nerve with me.
Maybe it’s because we had a fatality here in Texas a few weeks ago. Although the setting was different, a young, inexperienced driver lost control of his MINI, veered into oncoming traffic, killed himself, a man and young child and critically injured 2 other folks.
I guess I’ve been looking at Motoring in a different light lately.
2) Crusoe – I’m not saying this is the only thing shot with fancy stunt driving. That’s not my issue and I like the fancy driving in this commercial as well as TV shows and movies.
3) M.Dillon – I did state that most folks, including you and me get that it’s a commercial and know the difference and are above the influence of it’s suggestive nature. Also, I don’t have a problem with the other MINI commercials posted here. The tunnel spot is AWESOME.
That’s not my issue either. Maybe I have a problem with how a small percentage of OTHERS may perceive US from that first commercial. There’s a certain level of suggestive reality in that first spot (and I can’t put my finger on it) that isn’t dismissed by the fiction of being in a tunnel or popping pop corn. I worry it may change the perception of us on a subconscious level with some folks. What’s going to be on the simple mind of that hillbilly, red-neck (no offense to hillbilly red-necks) in the truck that I just merged in front of? Believe me, I already get the intimidating, yield-to-the-bigger-vehicle tail-gating all the time.
I guess what I’m trying to say is I can’t quite put my finger on it, but the context of the first spot (and only that first spot) just didn’t sit well with me. Do I expect them to pull it because if how I feel? Heck no! I’m obviously a very, very, very small percentage that feels this way and I certainly don’t fit the target they are going for with this spot.
I KNOW I NEED TO ‘LIGHTEN UP’ and I’m sure I’m thinking WAY TOO MUCH about this. My wife thinks so.
Again, I don’t expect anybody to agree with me and I usually don’t go against the grain of opinions. I just hope you can respect that we’re all entitled to our own opinions (right or wrong). Aren’t we?
Gabe, please, expalin me your last phrase… “And to clear things up, they are not intended for the US market (thankfully)” i´m sorry but my english is not pretty good…
dickdavid, I don’t think you need to lighten up, I think others taking your comments so literally and personally do. I knew exactly what you meant, as I think most people did, actually.
I also have a problem with quite a number of the car commercials from various vendors all showing cars with screeching tires leaving dust clouds and driving at high speeds. I understand the need for the marketing but it entices young inexperienced drivers to go out and buy the car and try to duplicate what they see. We have all read about the tragic results – young kid, excess speed and you know the rest.
>Gabe, please, expalin me your last phrase… “And to clear things up, they are not intended for the US market (thankfully)†i´m sorry but my english is not pretty good…
I don’t find the commercials particularly successful (nor anything more than moderately funny) and I look forward to what BSSP has up their sleeves for the US market. These commercials were shot by MINI international and last I heard MINI USA and BSSP have decided against using them for the US market.
If a driver views a car commercial (screeching tyres or not) and proceeds to mimic what he saw on public roads, frankly that guy deserves to die in a crash.
I like them. They remind me of the BMW Films of a few years back. The MINI is a performance oriented car. Those of us who own and drive them know this, but there are some folks out there (potential buyers) that may not have gotten the message. So what if a little pavement got black marks or a few speed limits may have been slightly bemt…it’s TV. It’s supposed to be entertaining. If TV were as hum-drum as daily life, nobody would watch it. There’s no young Clark Kent running around Smallville. Kansas saving people. He can’t really catch bullets in his bare hands. It’d be a wise idea for you not to attempt catching them in your hands either…
dickdavid, I understand your sentiments and agree with you 100%. Is this a commercial for the Mini, or “Need for Speed Underground?” I wasn’t sure at first…
I dunno, I’m just not a fan of a commercial glorifying the Mini with reckless driving on public streets–it just doesn’t seem to be what the Mini is about. I’d rather see something more clever, humorous and sophisticated in Mini advertising. This is something more along the lines of what Pontiac would put out rather than Mini.
Does anyone know where I can find any “past Mini commercials” that we “know & love”? Are there any websites where I can find a collection of them? Thanks on advance!
Fantastico!
Ok, I can’t resist – cool!
They are cool, especially the tunnel one 🙂
any of these mine from youtube???
… AHHHHHHHHHHHH… COOL!
The third one is my favorite!!

The youtube username is takechanpoo. So, if that’s you, then yes.
Sweet!!!

o well no it aint db lol
I think that was gabe driving in the third one, I knew he got a new job…but wow…;)
I have them and a few others on my website in the 2007 section as well as quite a number of others in the video clip area. I’m a MA at Westchester MINI and would appreciate feedback on my new site as well.
Best regards….. Steve

I think the MINI2 casts i viewed last week were of far better quality. Why can’t paul and gabe (and db) get together more often? it’s just an ocean.
somehow not nearly as cheaky as the first set of promos.

Note there are two more on minicooperinfo though not quite as good. Thanks, Steve!

LOL! One of the videos on Steve Stein’s site shows us the purpose of the fake hood scoop!!!

I hope you don’t mind me linking it here, Steve. Thanks for letting us know about your site.
cool
Oh my god…
Actually… This is how I drive. I thought it was pretty accurate.
Cheers
Nice driving! Great show of control and nibbleness.
This is the way commercials should be!
That way they can keep up with all the tv shows’ and movies’ wrecklessness.
Lighten Up Francis!
WOOOOHOOOOOO~!!!!!
Wow! On the first video you can hear the Turbo spooling up! Mmmmm………….Turbo! I can’t wait!
and whats great they show the appeal of the mini cooper, not the s

I was surprised at how the first thing I thought was “oh, R56”. It is very distinct.
I love the spots!!! Have been recorded in Spain! 😀
Yes these commercials we’re recorded in Spain a few months back. And to clear things up, they are not intended for the US market (thankfully).

Put an autocross event into a commercial =)

Ok, thanks Gabe.
I thought they were all pretty lame, especially the 1st one. None of them have the cheekiness that I know & love from past Mini commercials.

Hmmm, anyone seen TIJ recently…? 😀
Great videos BTW! I wonder how much the popcorn maker option is?
What is this?

Toward the bottom of every page there is a section labeled MINI Videos & Commercials. You can get the old commercial spots there.
