Judging from emails we’ve received, it would seem quite a few MINI owners are curious about the newly released iPhone and its compatibility with the bluetooth and iPod integration of the R56. We’re happy to report that several readers have tested the set-up and both the iPod adapter and bluetooth functionality appears to be working perfectly. Considering that several BMW models made earlier this year aren’t compatible (at this time anyway) 2007 MINI owners can feel pretty good about the shelling out for the new (and incredible based on my time with it) Apple iPhone.
However the results so far have been less than steller when it comes to 3rd party solutions in the previous MINI. We’ve heard from several people that some solutions (while they do still charge) cannot play audio from the iPhone. However we have yet to hear from anyone who has the official MINI iPod adapter for the R50/R52/R53.
and there will probably be even more functionality with the changes to the MINIs made after August, as they’ll have the USB / Bluetooth together.. niiiice..
🙂
There’s a lady on my local board who was able to use the DICE unit with her 06 MCS.

No info on if the phone features still functions when attached.
So, are you saying the R56 works like the BMW with both music AND Bluetooth hands-free calling?

yes

Don’t expect any new functionality with the factory USB option. It’ll mirror the current iPod adapter functionality but you’ll need to supply the iPod cord.
sweet
i’ve got an 05 mcs w/the factory ipod setup & an iphone. love them both, of course, but connecting the 2 has been driving me berserk. the iphone says it’s connected to a non-compatible dock and asks to go into airport mode.
crazy part is that sometimes it will work just fine, but usually it will play through the iphone instead of the stereo.
if i come up with a way to get it to play through the stereo consistently i’ll post it here.. otherwise i’ll have to look for a 3rd party solution. i’ve been thinking about a factory works 08 too 😉
Now if anyone has an iPhone to try, I’d be more than willing to let them test it on my iPod adapter in my MCSc 😉
Just curious if anyone knows if this will work with the factory bluetooth kit in pre 07 MINI’s? This is going to be the deciding factor in ourchasing this phone. I love the OEM bluetooth and can’t stand to hold a phone and drive anymore.
Thanks
has anyone tried this with ICE:Link?
My 2005 R53 with factory iPod connection will charge the iPhone and play any music on it. But it goes into airplane mode and will not work as a phone. 🙁
There’s another person on my local board who is claiming that it works on his R53 with aftermarket Bluetooth and icelink.
On my early build 2007 MINI cooper with the OEM connector the iPhone DOES work as both an iPod and a phone while charging in the glove box! First bond the phone with the car via bluetooth then plug it into the connector, you will get a message saying that it is “not an authorized accessory, turn on airplane mode?” Just chose NO and that’s it! the phone stays on and charges, you can use it as an iPod and when a call comes in it mutes a displays the call just as with other phones. The address book also transferred without a problem and differentiated multiple numbers assigned to the same name by showing “mobile” or “home” unlike my other phones, Love it!
I just had to but a comment in. I am in Hastins surfing motoring file on my iphone. It is awesome. I have an old 3g that does music for the mini.
glad to see that motoringfile is compatible with my iPhone!
This was posted on my local board. It’s pretty funny:

I tried the Ice:Link v1.1 with my iPhone and it will only work in flight mode. 🙁
I just bought an iphone. I have a 2007 mini with navigation. Although the phone rings through the mini its doesnt recognize my address book with names. Im still trying to figure out what I might be doing wrong. I “pair” the phone thru bluetooth but thats as far as I can get it to work. My Blackberry “curve” phone book is recognized by the mini. The iphone will hopefully work since its a much more cooler phone.
my address book seems to work fine – but i have issues with the bluetooth connection dropping out randomly. anyone else having problems like this?
(sorry i can’t offer any help on the address book issue, david, mine just works)
David
My 07′ has the nav as well. After the initial pairing make sure the phone does not go to “sleep” It will take a minute or so but the phonebook should appear on the screen, it did for mine.
david – i just read somewhere that having a lot of contacts can cause the address book not to sync. perhaps you have a lot? this guy had a thousand or something and he had to take some out – once he did, he was golden.
hope that helps.
My 2007 MCS bluetooth worked fine with my iPhone and downloaded the address book.
Today, I picked up the car after a software update to fix the voice control (which was delivered non-functional) and addition of the iPod adaptor. Now the bluetooth downloads garbage for the address book. It’s just a bunch of random numbers and stuff…totally unusable.
I need to check the boards and see if this is something odd that just happend to my car or if others are having similar problems after the latest update.
Jerry – From what I’ve been able to gather, the BMW software update is responsible for garbling the address book on import. Folks with older 2007’s had it working fine – until the software was updated. My mini is fresh off the boat – 3 days old – and shipped with the new software. The address book import is totally garbled. Otherwise, the iPhone works perfectly. BMW service had no information on this issue, so it’s up to us to raise it.
