This has to be the craziest comparo yet. From AOL Autos via Car and Driver, in search of cars that will give an Audi R8 a run for it’s money.
>Of course, both get their grunt from powerplants that are as antithetical as the wrappers they arrive in. The Cooper S’s high-tech, 1.6-liter engine uses a turbocharger to put a “bang” in “four-banger,” whereas the Escalade employs a brutal, old-school 403-hp, 6.2-liter V-8 that sucks down more than twice the fuel. Furthermore, if anything remotely resembling a curve turns up in the middle of that quarter-mile run, David will eat Goliath for lunch.
Plus, they have video!

Have you seen the Escalade ad that lists the Cooper Conv as one of the cars it beats in MPG?
Why not, the current convertible gets terrible milage compared to a hybrid Escalade. Great marketing.
Confirmation of the pointlessness of AOL autos uselessness.
Maybe they should have compared it to any number of much larger and faster cars. Maybe soon they will compare a Smart to a jet dragster and amaze us with those results. All this story is about is if you add enough power even a brick can accelerate.
Next comparison on C&D AOL:
MINI Cooper vs Black & Decker Toast-R-Oven. STAY TUNED!
What a complete waste of time in this comparison.
How about comparing a MINI Cooper to one of Japans hot hatches instead.
That is too nuts. My Father has an 07 Escalade and an 08 MINI Cooper S. He’ll find this a hoot!
I thought it was one of the more fun and entertaining car articles I’ve seen in a while. The moral of the story is, never feel too smug about whatever you’re driving.
To those who commented on the article being pointless, what results would you have predicted from the comparisons? The main point of the article is that things are not always what you might expect. If this had been done on Top Gear, everybody would have thought it was clever and funny. MINI owners have to be less sensitive about their cars not always coming out on top.
I for one was not surprised by the article, a nearly 500 hp SUV should be able to accelerate. That is does this as well as a smaller car with nearly a third of the hp is no surprise at all. Heck, I assume a F-22 is quicker than my Mini even though its larger 😉
Unbelievable!!! GM comparing the gas mileage of a MINI COOPER ‘S’ to that of one of the largest American SUV’s in their Fleet?! Good heavens! Do you have any idea how many MINI COOPERS you could buy with the cost of (1) of their Cadillac Hybrid Escalades, ($80,000 for the “platinum model!) You could buy (4) new Standard MINI COOPERS with manual transmission (which average 28city/37hwy mpg!!!) Funny how GM choose the MINI convertible which has the most weight and drag of all the models, and naturally, the worse mileage. Please check out the article, “Cadillac Escalade Hybrid: Green or Not?” by Max Hadwell. You will see what the so called “Hybrid” Escalade averaged in a five mile test drive around Beverly Hills, CA.! (Yeah, 10.3 mpg doesn’t lie when it shows up on the vehicles computer!) GOTCHA GM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
