Our friends at Bigblogg managed to be in the right place at the right time. They’ve had a peak under the hood of a Countryman with the much rumored (and definitely coming) BMW 2.0 diesel engine. While BMW has many flavors of 2.0L diesel we expect MINI to launch with the mill out of the BMW 316 which should give the new MINI D around 115 hp and well north 60 mpg combined that the 316 gets.
We expect this to be the first of several BMW diesel engines shoehorned into the MINI over the years culminating in a Cooper S D with power similar to the current MCS.
It goes without saying that the US market will not be getting this car. But if you want more efficiency and live in the US, MINI will have something pretty compelling soon. We’ll tell you more about that next week.

Wonderful news! The diesel would be the perfect engine for me if I ever got the Countryman. I screamed around Silverstone Circuit in a MINI Clubman D last year and I loved it! It even got great mph while doing it! It did’t want to pull past 4.5K but then again, it was Cooper D and not a Cooper S D. Bring in on BMW/MINI!

If that brought that stateside, I’d put my deposit down today. Happened to see a brand new Jetta wagon TDI in the parking lot this morning, with better spec MPG (maybe not realworld) and tons upon tons more room than my R56 Cooper.

Occasionally I fancy something like that or a Golf 3door TDI.

I have many English friends with this engine. I can’t wait for BMW to bring it to the US. It is coming in the X1; I hope they decide to put it in the Countryman.

I bet the old e30 m3 4 cylinder would fit.

Hmmm…. a MINI logo already attached to the engine?

Ill believe it when I see it in a show room.

If it’s coming in the X1, you could retrofit it! ;)
