MINI USA sales were down over eight percent for May. According to MINI the very strong performance in May 2009 made the numbers look worse then they were. In fact year over year, MINI showed a stable performance with 16,804 units, up 0.1 percent and continued to increase its share in a market that is still lagging other segments.

Clubman sales are impressive, though. Some quick math says 26% of all MINIs sold in the US in May were Clubmans. (Compared to 53% Hardtops and 21% Convertibles).

I agree, anyone who follows this marque is aware of a significant interior refresh coming as early as September. If I was in the market for a MCS I would hold out for the new cars. Not to mention, personally, I am trying to coax a 1997 Volvo w/ 270K on the odo to make it until next year so I will have an opportunity to acquire a Countryman.

This is the danger of year on year monthly sales figures. What is good news can look like bad news and vice versa. The trends on Ian Culls site offer a more complete veiw, with long term trends being shown.

A couple months ago, Chrysler had the best year on year month of any car maker. It’s because everyone thought chrysler was swirling in the bowl about to go down a year ago… Not because Chrysler had some big improvment…

Just over two years ago I sold my Dodge SRT-4 to buy a JCW Mini and bang! The economy went into the – well you know – anyway I lost my job – sold more things, no Mini and now I’m on unemployment and I can’t buy a Mini – NO JOBS, NO can Buy anything – let alone a new car – Mini Sales down- do the statistics consider what is going on with me and the hundreds of thouands of folks like me _ I want a JCW Mini but My family needs to eat and keep a roof over our heads —— Thank you for letting me vent.
