We’ve heard rumors of the back pressure popping sound so loved in the late model R53s coming back with the 2011 LCI. Today we can confirm it. For the 2011 Cooper S will indeed have the mythical back pressure popping sound when the sport button is pressed and a different fuel delivery algorithm is engaged within the MINI’s digital brain. It may not sound like much, but as any 2005 or 2006 MSC or current JCW owner can tell you, it’s a huge value add.
This addition along with the 13 extra HP (US), exterior and interior upgrades and audio system rethink have unquestionably made the 2011 refresh hugely impressive. But there’s still more to come. Check back each day over the next week for more details of the 2011 LCI culminating in final US market pricing.

Nice :)

I love my little R52 burble butt. Glad to see it back, but hoops shouldn’t have to jumped through to turn it on. It should just be there.

The burble adds so much character to the car. MINI is making the refresh very compelling.

Yes it looks like the refresh is adding some impressive additions and “corrections” to the R56v1. I hope that some of these software additions, like P&B can be added on for us v1’ers.

Awesome! I really wish I got a 3yr lease instead of the 3.5yr lease we have. 😛 With all the recent changes announced, purchasing a Cooper S is becoming more likely for me late next year.

Awesome! Gonna make the coupester I get next even better! :)

Dunno if anyone else has noticed…
but it you look at the rear tail lamps they make the car look like it has had WAY too much coffee and not enough sleep…LOL
You can blame my over active imagination…

Haha Sideways, I am glad that it’s not only me who noticed that about the new tail lights!

Re: the burble, I get a burble with my 2009 JCW Clubman! Although it’s not the same thing my 06 Cooper S had, I was still surprised and very pleased to find it!

@ lilcoopr. Care to share on the difference? I’m only familiar with the JCW burble, but how I love it so. BTW, if that’s the new spice orange consider me sold.

Versus – the 09+ JCW does occasionsally give a nice little pop/burble but it’s not nearly as pronounced or as often as it was on the 05/06 S.

That’s it. I’m completely sold. 100%.

Great news! It looks like the refresh will be worth it in many ways. :)

Want some burble? Throw a Borla Race exhaust on there.
That’ll give you some burble.

What hoops. You turn on the sport button. If you had a R56 you’d know that button is mashed most of the time anyway =P

Burbles are good. all good. Cut out the center resonator to increase burble!

Another day on MF, another bit of great news about the R56 refresh. Yup, agree that 05/06 R53-like burble/pop is a great thing to have… adds a ton of character to the driving experience. Glad to hear it is coming back!

Awesome.

Made same comment on previous electric MINI post – We want hear our cars burble, pop, rev, backfire… who needs radio, cd, when you can listen to the gear changes..

In Europe it never disappeared…

It is just more pronunced in 2011 + “sport”

But still the JCW burble is better

And no Robert Fairchild, JCW burble is way better than 05/06 Cooper S…

In Europe it never disappeared…

For the record I don’t believe it was on EU cars. For starters it was never on either of the R56 MCSs I’ve driven in Europe. Secondly several people at MINI assured me that it was eliminated worldwide with the R56.

@ Versus: Yes, that’s the new Spice Orange colour! Check out a more recent post on MF of all the new R56/55/57 colours! My burble with the 06 R53 was amazing. I heard it on a regular basis and did not have to try to create it like I do with the 09 JCW. With the JCW, it’s more of a growl with an occasional, deeper sounding burble. The R53 had a sound like popcorn popping – which I found very pleasant in my parking garage :)

Someone clearly needs to make a video of this… hmmm… Weekend project for lilcoopr? ;)

Oh and it’s far easier to hear the burble or the hissssssssss of the turbo with the sport button on!

@ lilcoopr. Well if this addition to the R56 is the equivalent to what was going on with the R53, it’s going to be a hoot when you get on it.

I have driven several rhd R56 mcs and jcw cars that do have the burble

the more pop and burble the better. now they just need a way to add some supercharger whine to a turbo :-)

Yay!!

I LOVE the burble out of my R52. I didn’t realise the R56 didn’t have it!

I’m hoping that this also comes on the Countryman as well. Is this on all lines or just the S and JCW?
