As part of the master marketing plan BMW has begun the next stage of Project i marketing with it’s new site and documentary series Activate the Future. Today we have the trailer for the series. It’s all about questions like, where are the flying cars? Where are the spaceships? It’s the sort of thing I asked myself after driving a Tesla. But that kind of reaction to a Tesla and what BMW is saying here is no coincidence. They’re getting the world ready for something new. They’re getting the world ready for BMW’s biggest bet yet, the carbon, aluminum iSetta electric city car. And that last line, “they better make fun.” Remember that.
So what does it mean for MINI? This will be an extremely lightweight car with a carbon monocoque on an aluminum frame (yes body on frame is back!). That all adds up to a base price of at least $40k. Yes this will be a premium small electric vehicle and not something that works well within the MINI brand. Therefore the first generation of city cars will be marketed under the iSetta brand under the BMW brand (with the name MINI no where in sight). But that will likely change as costs are driven downwards during the second generation of cars.

They do like to use short films for marketing, remember “The Hire”, Madonna in a M5 “star”, and Ambush. Now it has a reality swing.

Ready to see the iSetta in person.

I once saw an MCV rolling shell while in a well known Bavarian City in a previous life and it was very cool despite it being without interior or trim or paint, I could see glimpses of something which when finished would be a highly desirable car. I expect its changed a little in order to assist with manufacturing processes, but as a City car it would be on my list of potential MINI replacements.

This is great… some truly epic innovation is possible with this project. Looking forward to it!

flat black superbird? Like.

A flying Pinto? Who knew? Thought provoking questions…look forward to the answers.

The old Isetta was smaller than the 1959 Mini. That’s why Issigonis was asked to design a small car for BMC.
This fits with the new concept of not being a MINI.

New fangled ideas? Huh! Back when I was a little mini-minor, I watched the Jetsons on TV. And the film 2001 A Space Odyssey. So what happened to new technology? We now have devices like used in Star Trek but they don’t beam-me-up anywhere. JFK’s space race died after we actually beat the Russians to the moon.

What is the phrase from the Bible? – “There is nothing new under the sun”.

Exciting in many ways! The new iSetta brings the return of an opportunity to the BMW Group. MINI will also benefit from it! Definitely exciting…

So the next gen Mini will be again a steel uni-body, but the one that follows that will likely be carbon on aluminum, or perhaps all aluminum by that time…?

Things are gonna get interesting!
