MINI’s latest concept is going into production. However we’ve heard through sources that its name may not follow it. Yes the Paceman will likely be called something entirely different. Could it be something as simple as the Countryman Coupe? Or perhaps another crafty name featuring “man” in there? We have our own ideas but we (and MINI) wants to hear yours.
So this is your chance to potentially influence what this model will be called. Simply post your ideas in the comments section below.
Now for those who may have missed all our reporting on the new sport activity coupe (BMW’s term not ours) the Paceman debuted at the Detroit auto show in three door form with two doors and a standard hatch. However we’ve confirmed through sources that MINI will likely add two rear hinged small suicide doors similar to the one that’s currently on the Clubman. MINI will have a tough time fitting the new car between other model debuts but our guess is that it will debut sometime in late 2013 or early 2014.

Maybe the Coupeman? :-P

MINI Dynamic

If MINI are moving away from more traditional Mini size and style, they can also move away from the *man nomenclature. Dynamic kind of fits the “sports active coupe” mould. It espouses the phenomenon of energy and movement and also of change.

Where do I get my commission?

Doesn’t quite sound right but, they could call it either the Countryman GT or the Clubman GT as a throwback to the Mini 1275GT ???

I think they should just call it the Morris Mini S or the Austin Cooper S Mini

Based on the description, I say call it the Clubman XL.

I really like the Paceman name. It brings to my mind the idea of a pace car, the one everyone has to follow, keeping the rest of the pack behind it.

@Drill: I really hope they don’t go with a “GT” name, look at the ugly BMW made with the 5series GT. Of course, that’s just my opinion.

Countryman GT. It’s simple and effective and says exactly what the car will be, a ‘Grand Tourisimo’ version of the Countryman.

CooperMan. Faster than a speeding building and able to leap tall buildings in a single jump

I’m not a fan of the GT moniker but it WOULD have a historical reference and we know that the name “Traveller” raises some… issues in some markets so…

What is wrong with Paceman?

The MINI Daytripper

+1 on the Countryman GT. It just plain makes sense.

What about the PacMan! I guess Namco and Midway might have issue with it.

How about the “Alien”. I like it but from the rear it looks like and angry alien with red eyes and sporting a 5 o’clock shadow.

Oh my god thank you MINI and Motoringfile!!! Paceman is just not a great name ultimately for this swoopy sports activity coupe. Countryman Coupe is too much. Just imagine “2012 MINI Cooper S Countryman Coupe All4.” Let the name mess ups begin. How about Alpine? Named after one of the very first races Mini won back in the 1960’s? Or maybe GTC short for “Grand Touring Coupe?”

World Touring Familyman. Even the haters can love that name.

@ iNomis,

WTF. :)

Countryman EJ

Error in Judgement

sPACEman, baby!
the “s” being the typical squiggly “s” for the more powerful engine.

+1 on the Countryman GTC.

+1 On Countryman GT

I say stick with Paceman.

Clubman MKII

C-Coupe

Or:
You-cant-be-serious-another-MINI-that-doesnt-look-like-a-MINI-and-is-too-ugly-for-words

Mountainman or Adventure Coupe

How about to play with the names of legendary Mini Rally drivers?
Something like MINI Hopkirk? Or MINI Rauno?

MINI Country Club: Rep ties optional

Another vote here for Countryman GT

@Makar – then it would be the MINI Paddy wagon (after Hopkirk) or the MINI Aaltonnen (no one including me would be able to spell that).
WHATS WRONG WITH PACEMAN? Wasn’t there a Chrysler Pacer back when?
Or for thoase outta this world – SPACEMAN, after the Space shuttle.
For drivers with a sweet tooth – CANDYMAN.

Logic would have to be a family name – Clubman, Countryman, Paceman, keep it rolling.

If MINI wants a name that follows the, ending in man theme, as well as falling alphabetically between clubman and countryman, then I suggest Cornerman. Interpreting the word Cornerman as “player in corners”, it refers to the unique handling ability of MINI.

Why not the name we thought the Countryman was originally going to be called? The Crossman

Batman!

Gregw: the Pacer was an American Motors Corporation or AMC car. The same folks who gave us the Gremlen… and the AMX

Shooting Brakeman.

‘Ohhhman’. Not another variant. They’re getting further and further away from a MINI. Like the Countryman, it should be a ‘MIDI’ at that size. One more leap and they’ll have a ‘MAXI’ comparable to the Austin Maxi! Hmmm, or maybe not.

somebody at the NAIAS called it the MINI Pac-man

“Paceman” is good. It suggests “setting the pace,” and the name agrees with those of the other, “larger” MINIs.

With the addition of the two suicide doors you could call it the Honda Element

How about X0.5 ?

:-)

If it is going to have a “man” name (of which I am not at all fond), Paceman is somewhat less silly than other potential names. Personally I would prefer it to be nameless like the R56. The trouble is that names conjure up images and associations as do numbers, but to a lesser degree; and, the images and associations are not always appealing. Presently I own a Rogue and find the name to be, clumsy. I would not be particularly excited about any of my cars having names like: Jimmy, Wrangler, Rogue, Countryman, Clubman, Paceman, Amigo, Fiesta, Lil-buck-a-roo, or the like. But that is just my opinion.

I like “Paceman”
“SuburbMan” Is where the car really sits in the lineup. Between the city and the country

How about the “Whyman”? since I can’t figure out the reason for this model.

Another vote for Countryman GT or GTC. Yeah, it’s not the most creative, but I think it makes the most sense.

I say Countryman Coupe sounds best, has a (car) familiy/line feel to it and also shows which platform it’s based upon…

I say either the ‘Sprint’ or ‘Sprintman’ as a reference to the low slung, roof chopped, wide bodied coupe that was coachbuilt in the 60’s.
Although i still sit here thinking “If they give this 2 suicide doors and proper mini rear, ie vertical lamps, isnt this what the countryman should have been all along?

MINI Sportsman

It’s a smaller countryman… Call it the stateman :p

MAN that’s ugly? Uglyman? haha, just joking about

Oh oh! wait, wait, wait, wait. I forgot the term “man” is not cool or PC correct these days. And yet no women have complained on the blog yet.
So from a feminist point of view it should be the Countryperson or the Paceperson.
Don’t let the Japanese or Chinese markets dictate names otherwise we will end up with all sorts of names that are meaningless.

@MINIbro – can’t have Alpine as its been done before – Sunbeam Alpine (Maxwell Smart drove one), Chrysler Alpine (Europe markets).

How about the “MINI Escapade”

Gregw: the Pacer was an American Motors Corporation or AMC car. The same folks who gave us the Gremlen… and the AMX

Gawd, that’s a BAD memory…

Anyway, I would vote for Clubman as I think this is what will replace it. I don’t like the idea of the current Clubman going away, but I fear the Paceman is it…

The AMX wasn’t that bad of car, but the Pacer? A rolling greenhouse. When I see or hear Paceman, I think of either that Pacer or PacMan. Why not Mini Mach S, Mach JCW or Mach WRC, afterall this is the car that will be the ralleying car when it does come out

Uggo, the ugly mistake-man.

Strider

How about the Griswold Family Truckster? Or Truckster

@Don Hopings: This has been mentioned a few times before, but this will not replace the Clubman. Hard to believe, but this will be in addition to the Clubman, which will also be built on this platform. Both may have two rear Club Doors, but the Clubman will retain the barn doors in back. Seems like a crowded field to me.

MINI Main-Man,

Uselessman

or

Pointlessman

or

Fatman

Isn’t the full name for all MINI’s still “MINI COOPER” + model name, even though most of us usually drop the “COOPER” part? If that’s true, then “MINI COOPER Countryman Coupe” sounds a little strange, even though it does look like the “coupe version” of the Countryman.

I prefer the larger size of my Clubman vs. the “regular” Coupe; but I always thought its proportions were a bit off. But that’s usually true for most “station wagons”; and on my CA registration I noticed the “body type” for my Clubman is noted as “SW”.

Clubman? Wink wink nudge nudge… ;-)

Mini Cooper Wingman
or
Mini Cooper SXL

..jus spitballin’.

hows about the land Mini ?

I think they should just stick with Paceman.. MINI Cooper Countryman GT S? Doesn’t sound right..

Jelly Bean!

speedster

The Squatman

Cramwagon ;)

MINI Cooper Countryman GT(S) sounds weird. Also, it invokes the BMW GT awfulness.

Anything with “Coupe” would get it mixed up with the pretty twin.

Paceman isn’t bad.

Crossman would be nice.

Why not Traveller?

Isn’t the full name for all MINI’s still “MINI COOPER†+ model name, even though most of us usually drop the “COOPER†part?

I was just checking MINIUSA.com and that isn’t true for the JCW models. On their site, you will see John Cooper Works Clubman or MINI John Cooper Works Clubman. Otherwise it would be something like MINI Cooper John Cooper Works Clubman and that gets a bit cumbersome…

@ Don Hopings. Here’s some knowledge for you. All MINI’s now follow a certain naming ordedr since 2008 when the Clubman was introduced. You have in order MINI (Brand) + Cooper/Cooper S/John Cooper Works (performance Type) + Hardtop//Convertrible/Clubmnma//Countryman (Bodystyle). This is how all MINI’s are named. None of the cars have their bodystyle type written on them but most people know what they are. People call MINI’s MINI Cooper’s but this is incorrect as it only refers to two of the three identifying criteria. It’s like calling every Jeep you see a Jeep Cherokee.

I also would like to see MINI further differentiate itself. Save the “Cooper” for the 2 door hatchbacks and convertables R50/53/56 and R52/57. There should be no “Cooper” on the Clubman (R55) or on the Countryman (R60).

MINI Clubman and MINI Countryman will suffice nicely.

No smilies needed as I am not sarcastic in this post.

MINI Crossman

How about the Bridger? Actually, all kidding aside…”Bridger” is a pretty cool name for a car. “I drive a Bridger.” I think that sounds pretty good. Or you could go with the “Salzman” (keeping with the “man” naming convention).

Did anyone suggest “HIGHWAYMAN” Probably not.

Anything but Paceman, period. But, I’ve heard Countryman GT and like that, or Countryman JCW. My question is how they are go position this car. We have the standard Mini, and the Clubman, which they contend that they are NOT going to discontinue, and the Countryman. It’s based on the Countryman, so where and what price range are they going fit this into? Much higher and you might as well just bite the bullet and go BMW 1 or 3 Series. But then, you’d have to deal with BMW dealers.

Amen Dr.Dif. These expansions are interesting takes on the original, but Coopers they are not. Also, per the “Man” theme….no one is addressing the problem of plurality. Is is Clubmans/Countrymans, Clubmen/Countrymen;just strange all the way around. I fear the tidy, economic, minimalist original styling of Mini and even the first couple generations of MINI is bulging out and turning into a bubble. Who’s on quality control and dishing out reality checks in design? Love my MINI, just nervous about direction.

I liked the idea of “MINI Country Club”, but add “man” at the end:

Country Clubman

The MINI Future or the Futureman S

Now thats a name!

So often in life, ‘less is more’ and that’s certainly the case with Minis. Too many names or too long a name will only cause confusion in the market place. I’m still convinced that Countryman GT is the right name.

I heard Oprah kicked BMW a few million to name it the “Stedman”

The MINI MAX
