During our time with the Coupe a few weeks back, we got a good look at the final production car in the flesh. And, as you might expect, we grabbed our camera.
In person the Coupe looks fantastic. The stance and the proportion just seems to come together in the real world in a way that it simply doesn’t in photos. And with the camouflage off the roof (yes even in red) starts to feel more cohesive and natural. We also got a glimpse of a few other color combinations thanks to MINI’s renderings on the wall around the car you see above. Our favorite (at least in rendered form) has to be the BRG with black roof and alternating stripes. It also seemed to be Anders Warming (MINI’s new Design Head) favorite as well.

Amazing… Mesmerizing! BUT what happened to the fuel cap?

+1, Gabe… MCSDS: Great catch; I missed that in all the photos thus far…Â

As in the convertible, the structure components of the chassis dictate a more shallow fuel door area and thus the standard MCS or JCW fuel cap doesn’t fit.

Amazing… Mesmerizing! BUT what happened to the fuel cap?

We saw one in CAMO @ MOT, Fantastic…Can’t wait for the Roadster Bob S.

I must concede that the excellent photos present compelling “imagery for thought.” Â In a similar vein, it is not unusual for actual vehicles to look better or worse “in the sheet metal.” Â And according to Gabe, the R58 looks “fantastic” in person. The Roadster should be a treat. From the photos previously displayed, it looks very good with the top down. Top up less so.

Agreed Harry, I know the first time I saw a GP in photos I was a little disinterested. Then the first time in person found it to be the best looking MINI to date imo.

Good looking car for sure, still looks like a Cooper S with a aero kit and badges to me. Wonder if MINI is ever going to do anything to address the Cooper S/jcw clone cars. I want ///M to build the next M3 with a body kit that all 3 series can order and make the visual difference a different colored roof and badges only and see how that goes.

This car looks great! I really did not think I would like it as much as I do.

Gabe, I know you said that this would be very limited production and it is not the time for me to buy a car right now, how many years can we expect this car to be offered as the R58? I like the thought of the Roadster but I think I like this better. In your expert opinion can I put down my deposit next summer without worry?

Thanks.

Nope never said that. This won’t be limited. MINI will make as many as people will buy.

Are you concerned because this is based on the R56 while the F56 is on the horizon?

Awaiting the photos of my “real world” price range, ie the Cooper and S cars.I understand the wow factor of the JCW to be first on stage and agree it’s affect will be an important splash in the pond. Just eagerly awaiting the rest of ’em that’s all. I expect my first sighting on the street of any coupe or roadster will be a hazardous one for traffic flow. My luck it will be going the other way on the freeway and miles from an exit.

Gabe, are the colors the coupe is available in listed anywhere? I have overlooked if they are. Any colors exclusive to the S or JCW version? And what about the Estoril-esque concept color?

Thanks!

Jim

It looks pretty sweet in cooper trim, with the old school grill and refreshingly simple body kit. Optioned up with the 17″ wheels and a jcw suspension it could be great fun.

Not great photos (it was dark) and gone by daylight… but I finally saw one in the wild in Santa Barbara this past week. Gotta say, I thought the design looked weird when I first saw it, and in person, I completely changed my mind. It looks great, modern and like an incredibly fun car to drive.
