MINI Breaks All-Time Sales Record in 2015

Not only has MINI sold more in 2015 than any year since its relaunch in 2001, it’s blown away the all-time record of MINIs sold in one year. Given the high level of competition and the high levels of engineering and costs associated with the automotive sector, it’s an incredible achievement 14 years after re-launching the brand.
In 1971 at the height of the first incarnation’s popularity, 318,475 Minis were delivered to customers. Today MINI has announced that it sold 338,466.
How does that figure compare to recent years? As it turns around pretty well.
– 2010: 234,175
– 2011: 285,060 (Countryman launches)
– 2012: 301,526
– 2013: 305,030
– 2014: 302,183 (F56 launches with supply constraints)
– 2015: 338,466
The four door hatch (F55) and the standard hatch (F56) have have more than taken up the slack as the Countryman has become a bit long in the tooth. With the Clubman hitting dealerships in ernest in January, 2016 could be even better.
Official release: MINI achieved a new all-time annual sales record in 2015 with a total of 338,466 vehicles delivered to customers worldwide, an increase of 12.0% compared with the previous year. A total of 127,194 MINI 3 doors were sold around the world in 2015 (+0.2%) while 94,788 customers took delivery of a MINI 5 door. The new MINI Clubman, which went on sale in October, was delivered to 8,003 customers.
Peter Schwarzenbauer, BMW AG board member responsible for MINI, BMW Motorrad and Rolls-Royce commented: “We are delighted that our fresh new model range has achieved MINI’s best-ever sales result. The MINI 3 door is as popular as ever and the MINI 5 door has attracted many new customers to the brand. I am sure the new MINI Cabrio, due on the market in March, will provide further momentum going forward into 2016. Our success last year shows that the MINI is heading in the right direction.”

371 days ago, I posted a comment on MF’s article, “MINI USA Sales Up 0.3% For December 2014”, in which I predicted that 2015 would be a “fantastic year” for MINI global sales, and that we would witness annual global sales exceed Mini’s all-time sales record achieved in 1971; and so it turned out to be.

Peter Schwarzenbauer, BMW board member responsible for MINI, summed it up perfectly when he said, “Our success last year shows that MINI is heading in the right direction”. Couldn’t agree with you more Peter.

By the end of 2014, sales of the F55 five-door had settled down to around half those of the F56 3-door, a ratio of 1:2, reversing the trend in Europe where traditionally 5-door Hatchbacks outsell 3-doors by a ration of 2:1. So, by the end of 2015, it is interesting to see that F55 is closing the gap on F56.

Out of 221,982 MINI Hatchbacks sold globally in 2015, 57.30% were F56 and 42.70% were F55. This compares with 44,560 Hatchbacks sold in the UK, of which 57.10% were F56 and 42.90% were F55, and 34,967 Hatchbacks sold in the USA of which 56.56% were F56 and 43.44% were F55. Surprisingly consistent in all markets.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if by the end of 2016, F55 has taken the lead.
