World Premier: MINI JCW GP Concept
Wow. Just wow. This is the MINI JCW GP Concept and it's MINI like we’ve never seen the brand before. The all new JCW GP Concept car is a brash and extremely aggressive take on MINI’s ultimate sports car. But is this a concept or a preview of what's to come?

whoa

No manual transmission, no info on motor … meh

The author needs to recheck their Mini history or their subtraction as it’s been 55, not “exactly 50”, years since the first Mini Coopers began making their presence known in motorsport. In 1962, the first full year of production, the Mini Coopers scored over 140 competition victories. 50 years ago was the year of Mini’s third and final Monte Carlo Rallye victory (fourth had they not been victims of a post Rallye disqualification over a minor issue regarding their front lighting after winning on the road in ’66).

Let’s not forget Mini’s remarkable result in the 1968 Monte Carlo Rally. 300 cars started the Rally, but only 179 actually finished. Three Minis crossed the line in Monte Carlo in third, fourth and fifth places, beaten only by two Porsche 911s. No shame in that!

John Cooper was not a “sports car designer”, Cooper was a race car designer and constructor, primarily open wheel formula cars. Cooper led the way in the transition from front to rear engined cars both in Formula One and here in the US in Indycars. Other than his assistance in giving the Mini some added fierceness he never built sports cars for the public roads.

I. Want. This. Car.

No manual transmission in the concept. Does that mean it has that slushbox of a auto transmission in the F56?

As a previous owner of the R53 GP, I’d be interested in this car if it was AWD and puts down decent power. Gone are the days when the MINI didn’t have have hot hatch rivals. The new GP pricing is likely going to be in Golf R territory so it’s going to need to put down similar power to match. Style and character can only take you so far for a car that is performance oriented, and some say even that’s lacking from MINI lately.

The concept is using the forthcoming DCT that the rest of the range will see soon.

Wait? Are you saying that MINI will be doing away with manual transmissions?

Gauche, ludicrous, insipid; that pretty much covers this “wow.”

Overall, I think its interesting but the rear spoiler and side aero features look tacked on and seem superfluous. Also, has anyone noticed the dark blue chase car? It doesn’t look like a current production MINI. Maybe its the next JCW?

It looks amazing but I fear it will not be as fast as other sport compacts and cost twice as much.

While there’s still a bit too much in the vertical dimension, there’s a lot of improvement in the front grill treatment over the present F-series monstrosity. Any chance that’s part of the LCI?

I fail to see improvement in the front treatment. It has gone from “fish lip” to “snow shovel.” The fish lip on my F56 goes nicely with the front license plate holder, by the way ;-)

I agree, it looks like what it should have been from the start from the F generation.

The lip is not attractive, and minis used to have front grilles that took the entire front of the car, so make it horizontal slats for the LCI and you’re back in business!

I know the GP production model will be toned way down from this but I hope it at least retains the wider fender flares. As the top of the line model the GP should stand visually more apart from lesser models, like the M3/4 from the regular 3/4 series. Also without a backseat maybe there is room for some batteries to create a high performance hybrid like the P1.

Haha yes there would be room but are you willing to pay it $20-25k more?

Put the electric motor on the rear axle and you’ve got a AWD hybrid. Welcome back, pocket rocket!

Sorry–no manual, not interested.

The terrified fish now has a chin strap. I love the effort, but this generation is hideous across the entire line.

Looks a little like a mid-80s mid-engined Renault 5 Turbo. I’d love Mini to do a street-legal version of this concept.

You nailed it.
