BMW Group are partnering with US based Solid Power to bring solid-state batteries to BMW and MINI vehicles. Called a game-changer by industry insiders, solid state batteries have the ability to dramatically lower costs of electric vehicles. They do this by eliminating the need for costly safety systems that traditional batteries require. But that’s just a hint at their potential. They also promise greater range with less size and weight.
The partnership calls for BMW to help advance Solid Power’s technology to achieve performance levels required for high-performance EVs. We like the sound of that.
What’s the Deal with Solid State Batteries?
Solid state battery technology improves on lithium-ion batteries by replacing the liquid or gel with a solid, conductive material. This allows for larger capacity in smaller sizes while eliminating many safety risks traditionally associated with lithium-ion batteries.
Timing is TBD but we have some clues in other automakers plans. Toyota for instance has stated that their own solid state batteries will be ready by the early 2020.
That timing could line up rather well for the next generation MINI and the 2nd generation all electric MINI.

Exciting.
