While MINI sales were down 2.7% for July, the more pressing figure was year to date sales. For the first time in memory, MINI is just under it’s sales pace from a previous year half way through. While that would still indicate success in today’s market, it’s telling because the MINI Countryman, the brand’s biggest seller worldwide, has been on sale for the entire year unlike 2017.
In total year-to-date sales at MINI achieved almost the same high level as last year, with a total of 207,675 (-0.2%) vehicles delivered to customers worldwide. MINI deliveries in July were down 2.7% (26,244).

2017 was a record year for MINI with global sales of 371,881, up 3.2% on the previous year, itself a record year.

This year, sales of Diesel engined cars, especially in Europe – and particularly in the UK, have plummeted. MINI global sales down a mere 0.2% YTD is, therefore, not a bad result.

Slightly off topic but relevant in the overall scheme of things MINI, according to market analyst JATO Dynamics, the SUV was the biggest selling vehicle segment in the first half of 2018, with 14.95m sales, and now account for almost 36% of passenger car sales worldwide. The Compact was the second biggest segment with 7.10m sold, and the Sub-Compact third with 5.4m.
