MINI will shut down production in both the UK and the Netherlands due to the Coronavirus and lowering demand as sales have collapsed. The news comes after most of Europe has now shut down and some countries have gone into full lockdown in an effort to fight the pandemic.
MINI will shutter both its Oxford and Hams Hall plants in the UK from March 23rd to April 17th. Additionally MINI’s manufacturer in the Netherlands, Nedcar has also shut down.
Our Take
Beyond the three plants, we at MF can’t help but think about the staff at MINI stores around the world who’s income will be greatly impacted by this pandemic. While there’s great uncertainty in the world right now, one thing we know for sure is that things always change and even this will pass.
That headline is disappointing (I read it twice). Here’s hoping MINI’s workers can avoid catching the coronavirus and not suffer from the loss of wages. I’ve been waiting since 2009 for my electric MINI; I can certainly wait longer.
