With the Nurburgring in the rear view, we headed east through the German countryside and eventually to the tourist infested town of Rothenburg. The picture to the right is indicative to the type of issues you have when trying to navigate through Germany.
Looks like you two are having fun, many of your shots on your Flikr day three shots brings back a lot of fun memories. Burg Eltz is one of the best castles in Germany imo, and if you ever get the chance go see Erhenburg Ruins in Reutte Austria, one of the best ruins.
What grade would you give the navigation system for its capability? Would you say its better or worse that your prior aftermarket?
I’ve been following your trip on Flickr and I must say I am very jealous, Gabe! The ‘ring goes with out saying (and Sabine too!), but just seeing the buildings and the towns in the area…I would love to go there.
Gabe, you are pretty much doing the same trip I did back in 2001 but I was coming on the opposite direction from the Netherlands (Amsterdam) into Germany.
We also stopped at Rothenberg and sure it is a tourist trap, but it is a fairly nice one. Get lost on the hidden streets and backways and you may make some nice discoveries along the way.
I love Europe and haven’t been there in 6 years so I am in the planning stages to visit the UK (Oxford factory tour) and possibly France sometime next year.

If cost isn’t an issue MINI’s Nav wins hands down for all the unrelated Nav niceties that integration gives you. However if you’re pinching pennies it’s hard to argue against the Nuvi 660. it does all navigation related function as good or better.
I’m curious, was the Mini that you picked up for the trip something anyone could do for the gathering or was it your motoringfile.com cred that scored such a sweet ride?

It’s a press car lent to me by MINI of Germany for covering MINI United. However there are plenty of places to rent MINIs in the Europe.
I’ve been there a few times. Mostly in the off seasons. The prices are better there than most places.
I spent 2 of my 3 years in Europe with out a navagation system. The last year I dont know how I got around with out one. They are a must over there.
