As we at MF gear up to enter our own 24 Hours of LeMons race in early October (without a MINI sadly) we couldn’t help but be inspired by a team from San Diego who have entered a ’62 Mini in the race. For those that don’t know, the 24 Hours of LeMons is a race where cars can’t cost any more than $500 and craziness is a rule of thumb. Think the original Cannonball Run on a budget and on a track.

A year or so ago I went with a neighbor up to Tracy, Ca to check out one of these 24 HOL races. He wanted to give his trusty, original Saturn, commuting steed a befitting burial. Some of the entry rules were quite interesting.

We watched controlled mayhem for sure. Cars with all manner of decorations, drivers and pit crews made for a lively and fun afternoon. John and I went back for the evening round of eliminations and by then the racing was a bit more intense!

A family situation put the Saturn’s retirement, he still drives it to work, on hold but it would have been interesting to see how the many family and friends he was going to invite to drive would have worked out.

Good luck to Team MF, you’ll need it.
