The secret has been out for years now that MINI and BMW will be introducing a new family if 1.5L three cylinder engines destined for small front wheel drive cars. But would MINI be replacing all four cylinders with equivalent 3 bangers? Our sources are now telling us that looks unlikely for at least the first iteration of the next generation MINI family. Instead we now believe that MINI will likely continue to use an updated version of the four cylinder “Prince” engine for Cooper S and JCW models through at least 2015.
So one new car and two radically different engines. In fact one source has told us that spotting the differences is quite easy – even under the yellow and black swirled camouflage. If you see a MINI prototype with one exhaust pipe it has a three cylinder engine. If it has two in the center, it’s a MCS or JCW with a four.
So what about the 3 cylinders, what should we expect? Read on for the details.
MINI intends on spreading the three cylinders across the MINI One and Cooper models initially. Sources are telling us that power ratings should be slightly higher than the current range on both the three and four cylinder models. But it’s the efficiency gains and the weight losses that are the big story. We’ve been told to not be surprised to see US Spec Cooper achieve upper 40 mpg figures on the highway. Additionally the engines should be measurably lighter and allow for better weight distribution front to rear.
Ultimately we believe that the three cylinder engines will not only make their way to the MCS but also other models as well. For instance don’t be surprised to see the base Cooper Countryman eventually get the ultra efficient power plant in a late cycle update.
Look for the engine to debut in the front wheel drive BMW shown at Paris this September. While it’ll be officially labeled as a concept, it should be very close to production in technology and drivetrain – the very two things the new MINI hatch will be sharing with it when it hits the market in late 2013.

Gabe, Do we know anything on the overall weight of the F56? I’m really hoping that platform sharing does not = a heavier next gen mini.

Lighter

Yeah!

This is good!
Not that they are really in the same class, but this new FR-S BRZ platform is really stirring up the auto enthusiast world with its back to basics, lightweight design, and driver oriented experience. Granted it will never have the styling, quirkiness, and pedigree that is the Mini brand. But I hope Mini saw this coming and can capitalize on these same basic fundamentals that keep “fun to drive’ in the Mini brand.

Every new car is on diet, no exception for Mini

That being, it’s been several months that Motoringfile stated that 4-cylinders would be in F56 initially !
No surprise

Hopefully this means with extra development time the turbo-I3 for MCS and JCW (and BMW i8) will be even more powerful and efficient. If I recall the 1.5L I3 in the Cooper and One will be normally aspirated? The new I3 netting near 40mpg with over 121hp/114lb-ft (of the current NA Prince) is great to hear, but I think the best news will be lower weight which leads to better weight distribution. In these “gap” years between when the S (and assumedly the JCW) receive the I3 and when the Cooper and One have the I3, perhaps the Cooper and One will have gasp better turn in, more communicative steering and more neutral handling than their S and JCW brothers?! That is commonplace with other brands and models that have different cylinder counts across their lineup but this would be a first for MINI. Perhaps we’d have to change the nickname from “justacooper” to “morethanacooper”! It also sounds like an even better platform for a B-Spec racer…

The N37 i-3 can put out 220hp in top form. All “F” models will get this by 2015. The late life cycle “R” models may see certain versions of this

I had thought I heard or read that they would all be turbos. Gabe? Nathaniel? I would prefer to have a normally aspirated option, but I had thought that wasn’t going to be available. Any confirmation of this?

Will it be a direct-injection engine like the Prince? I hope so; I’m looking forward to still dealing with carbon build-up in the F56…

Almost all engines from any manufacturer are or will be direct injection due to greater efficiency need.

… and if this 3-cylinder is any indication of future developments one could conclude that MINI is on the fast track to becoming a 4-wheeled Harley-Davidson. As the auctioneer might say — Do I hear 2? Going once; going twice … sold! The latest and “greatest” V2
MINI has arrived.

Maybe as a range extender for hybrid models… Way in the future for MINI but perhaps more of a reality for BMWi.

If one were going to make a motorcycle comparison, it’d be with Triumph. Their 3-cylinder engines are fantastic — a great blend of brute torque and smooth revs. Those who lament the BMW-ification of MINI should embrace the 3-cylinder engines as they’ll add a ton of character to the new car. Where it counts, too.

Can’t wait for the 3-cylinder engine(s). That’s the change I’m looking forward to most for the F56. It’s certainly not all the added tech and complexity that takes away from the purity of the driving experience that I love about my current MINI.

Gabe, anything new being let out on the F56 model? It’s been almost six months
Since we’ve been teased with anything new about the 3rd generation. I’ve still have
To be still have to be sd on this mod yet.

I meant sold on this 3rd generation yet. Still think that my next Mini will be a JCW Roadster.

Can’t argue with that. We’ll have more soon. That said are massive ten page article has a ton of info for you.

via mobile

Thanks, I’ve read about (I think) all that’s been written here, but as said, nothing’s come out since about July10th or so. I’m just anxious like I’m sure many others are.

Regarding F56 vs JCW Roadster. They will be very different cars… One with two seats and a lot of power and the other with utility and plenty of new tech to choose from.

Thanks again for your thoughts Gabe. As you know, my current daily driver is a R56 JCW Hatch, that gets driven in all types of weather. My previous ride was a 2007 MX-5 Miata, which I hated the position of the seats, other wise it was a nice under powered roadster. I’m a hotrodder at heart, and love power when I need it.

On the F56, I’d love for them to offer the JCW with the introduction, but remembering the R56, it took them 2 years to come out with the factory JCW, and three more years to make the JCW Aero package standard. So, we’ll see.
