Name the 2008 Extended Wheelbase MINI

As we reported a few weeks back, MINI will not be able to use either the Traveller nor Clubman name for the upcoming extended wheel base MINI. The rights to the name Traveller is owned by several parties in various countries and the legal and financial hurdle to go after it simply is too great. Likewise the Clubman name is available in every country except Japan where it’s owned by none other than Honda. And as you can guess, Honda isn’t exactly eager to sell it to a competitor.

So with that reality MINI is back to the drawing board and will soon be deciding on a final name for the new car due out around late 2007 or early 2008.

Here’s your chance to possibly give them a few ideas. In the comment section below give us your idea of a perfect name for the new extended wheelbase MINI. Something that will convey a sense of utility and adventure, yet in keeping with the spirit of MINI worldwide.

This post has NO affiliation with MINI. If they should happen to use a name mentioned here I wouldn’t expect to get anything more than self satisfaction and some minor celebrity status in the MINI world.

“Wanderer” was the name of an old pre-WW2 German car manufacturer, so maybe BMW could get that trademark. There’s a great oldies song (“The Wanderer”) that could help advertise the car.

“Friendship” is a bit of a pun. So is “Minister.”

    “MotorSport” also means More Space.

‘Woody’? (I know, only applies to wood paneled but I like the connotation)

    ‘Nomad’? (Yeah, probably taken)

‘Tailgater’? (Like AG would swallow that)

Despite the dubious history associated with ‘Maxi’ I have to admit this seems most sensible (of course ~ all caps = ‘MAXI’)

WINDYCITYMINI suggested the MINI Maxi (with MAXI in all caps of course) but how about “MINI maxi”? A subtle play on words there with “MINI” maxed out with all caps and “maxi” made smaller with no caps.

Clubman? Please, why does this name keep coming up? As is mentioned before in this thread:

Clubman was only for all the flat-front Minis, wagons or not, and I’m not inclined to see that for the new wagon anyway.

If BMW went for that name, it would be embarasingly obvious to me, and each and every classic Mini enthousiast that BMW really does not have much attention for Mini heritage and that they are just playing the heritage theme.

If you want historically correct, take Mini Estate, which is the name last used for a long wheelbase Mini, but it’s a bit boring if you ask me. Countryman would also be an historically correct name, but I think BMW would skip that since that brings up associations of men with beards from the British countryside ;) Maybe for a version that has the traditional wood trim.

Shooting Break I personally associate more with estate versions of otherwise pure sportscars, like Aston Martin. Mini is sporty, but not exactly a sportscar.

I kind of like Mini+. Simple.

if they can’t get their act together and reclaim TRAVELLER, which would be the most proper name as far as i’m concerned, i don’t see what’s wrong with MINI ESTATE or failing that, MINI COUNTRYMAN. perfectly good names both of them with tons of heritage. old men in beards is the new cool anyways, yeah, anoraks for everyone. clubman is just wrong, as has been stated several times already, please read up on the history of our beloved cars. according to what i can find, BMW still owns the ROVER name, nanjing didn’t purchase the name although they might, so MINI ROVER would work as well. strangely fitting too, in a way. i don’t hate MINI Touring either, it is a BMW afterall. so here are mine, in order:

MINI TRAVELLER (sort it!) MINI ESTATE MINI COUNTRYMAN MINI ROVER MINI TOURING MINI WOODY MINI VAN (although they’d have to make it panelled) MINI LWB Colin

  • ichor

ah, MINI BARN, for obvious reasons.

MINI Rallysport (sounds like a v6 camaro) MINI Weekender (sounds like a little coupon book) MINI Trunk (sounds like a storage unit sold at Wal-Mart) MINI Boot (British version on MINI Trunk) MINI Storage (got it off of a sign I saw on I-71) MINI Backpack

I vote for Countryman or Oxford

…or just not officialy have a name for it and give all the customers a link to Moss Motors classic Mini catalog, so they can buy an old Traveller emblem.

  • David S.

I would name it (drum roll please..)
